I know its early, but I'm making my holiday wish list for the family and need to know in what format to put down the Harry Potter box set on my list. I prefer HD-DVD all things being equal, but I'd sure like to know what the audio format will be on this bad boy. If Blu-ray gets a PCM track, I may lean that way.

Anyone know if it will have TrueHD?

The UK versions are all TrueHD. No clarification on the US versions yet.

DVDTown posted official specs. It looks like the first 3 movies are identical on Blu-ray and HD-DVD(PCM vs. Dolby TrueHD notwithstanding). But Goblet of Fire only has the IME feature on the HD-DVD, while Order of the Phoenix has the IME and web-enabled features exclusive to the HD-DVD and a documentary exclusive to the Blu-ray(plus the deleted scenes are in HD).

A bit off topic. Will the Harry Potter Box Set come w/ 2 extra slots for the next 2 upcoming movies? It'd be kinda odd to buy the box set now when the series isn't even complete yet so I would they it'd be smart to leave some space so the box set can be completed later on when the other 2 movies come out.

No there isnt likely extra room. They want you to buy a new box set for the 6th movies and then again a final super deluxe edition with all seven movies! together for the first time! Box set would be a nice gift tho, even if it's lacking the final 2.

Unfortunately Warner loves DN, so this would hurt the TrueHD track. Hopefully they will put a stop to it.

That's why I'm gonna order the standalone movies. Why get the boxset when you know two more installations are coming?

May I ask why when the boxset is still cheaper than getting all standalone movies?

Is there a number on each movie that will let me know in which order to watch them?

Has this actually affected any titles? The only time I can recall where the PCM track on a Blu-ray Warner title was considered marginally superior to the Dolby TrueHD track on its HD-DVD counterpart was in HDDVD Digest's review of The Departed. And of course that's just one reviewer's take.

Regardless, I'll definitely be getting Goblet of Fire on HD-DVD and Order of the Phoenix more than likely on Blu-ray. The rest don't really matter since they're (allegedly)identical.

On amazon it's the same price. $105 for the boxset, or $20 for the first four movies and $25 for the last one.

I am going to get the Boxset on HD DVD. All things being equal i prefer hd dvd. Since i have the ps3 and a 35, i go for hd dvd due to HBR and the fact that i don't have open media cabinet for ventilation. The a 35 is whisper quiet in the cabinet, while the ps3 roars if the door is closed. I just whish hd dvd would start matching the bogo's that blu ray is doing. In the past week i ordered ten blu ray's backing up my catalog, the only hd dvd i picked up was shrek 3.

The specs for HPOOTP since day one have been all over the map. It appears the british and japanese versions are 2 disc sets with all the bluray extras and in high def as they should be. This combo stuff is starting to irritate me. Combo or not this should be a 2 disc set.

X2!

I am really looking forward to this box set! At $104 it's a good deal for 5 movies in HD. Thats just about $21 a movie!

So Pro-630HD,
I know that you have been following this closely, which OOTP did you order?
For better or worse I ordered the HD DVD from amazon.jp and 1,3 from the UK. I got the UK GOF about a year ago from xploited.
Anyone else find it maddening that getting detail specs in advance is so hard?
Why do we have to wait until someone actually has it in their hands?
Simply posting front and back covers would take care of most it.

I just read an extensive (Dutch) review of the European Blu ray version of HPOOTP and the reviewer also mentioned the HD DVD is a 2 disc set and has ALL the extras (in HD) from the Blu ray disc AND the HD DVD in-movie experience. So it seems the HD DVD version is clearly the way to go if you want it all (and own an HD DVD player).

Sound for the BD version is LPCM 5.1 surroundtrack (48 kHz/ 16 bit)
Sound for the HD DVD version is Dolby TrueHD 5.1

Both versions are VC-1

Apparently (as was to be expected) the video and soundquality for the disc(s) are terrific.

Not that I think over 0,001 % on here can read this review, but here's a link to the (BD) disc review.

The US version should have all this stuff. I wish we had a WB insider in the forums.

If it is the new encoder that is used on Shrek the Third then it will be great :)

I haven't even opened it yet. I hear its the closest to 3d you can get. Sounds like every scene is eye candy.

I was also hoping they'd leave spaces for the last two movies. Oh well. I picked up the box set at WHV for $83. I've never had trouble with that site yet, everything gets delivered by release day. Let's hope the trend continues.
