I took advantage of Walmart's sale on the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player. Watched Transformers HD-DVD and it was great! But, of course, I have a problem. I have a Hitachi 50v500 and it has a DVI-HDCP ( 24 pin digital DVI ). I bought a Philips 6' Video Cable, 19 pin HDMI (M) - DVI (M) and when I play standard dvd's, I get a message that states that it does not support analog for upconversion. So I'm confused. Shouldn't I have the problem with the HD-DVD's if my tv is not HDCP compatable? Is there another converter cable that I should use to get the upconversion??

You might need a DVI to HDMI cable/adaptor that handles DVI-I and/or DVI-D.
This link to Ram Electronics DVI/HDMI FAQ sheet might help.
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_info.html
A cable that carries/is compatable w/ DVI-D is what should work. Carries the digital video part of HDMI thru the DVI connection.
Perhaps a different DVI-to-HDMI cable/adaptor is needed? Worth a look.
Will say that A2 DVD upconversion over HDMI looks excellent on my Hitachi CRT RPTV ('06 51F59A w/ HDMI in)

Ok, so here's the latest!
I updated my firmware to 2.7 hoping this would solve the issue. Nope.
So I turned everything off, then I plugged the Phillips hdmi to dvi into the back of the the player and then the tv. Then I plugged the component into the back of each. Turned on the player first, then once it was ready, turned on the tv.
Results are strange.
* If I put a HD-DVD into the player, the player displays 1080i and the tv displays 1080i. Great picture.
* If I put an original standard dvd into the player, the player displays 1080i, the tv displays 1080i. But the tv is blank. This is interesting because the tv shows the dvd player output until the dvd spins up, then it goes black.
* Now, if I put in a backed-up copy of a dvd, it plays fine with all displaying 1080i.
Now this is weird because I thought that:
1. only the HD-DVD required HDCP
2. the Hitachi dvi input was HDCP compliant
3. that the upconverting on the Toshiba required digital to digital. The Philips cable is HDMI to DVI and it looks DVI-D.
So my next step is to try different cables. But the thing that gets me is that I can play back-ups and not the originals! Sounds like HDCP!
Thanks!
Jim
you should only have the HDMI - DVI cable plugged in ( from HD DVD player to TV )
why do you have the component connected as well ?
I have the same TV and had the same HD DVD player - there shouldn't be an issue if only one set of cables are connected
the Toshiba A2 will not upconvert original standard DVDs over component
( it will ,however, upconvert back up copies of standard DVDs )
Oh yea, I forgot to mention , make sure you have updated the (A2) HD DVD players firmware to version 2.7
I believe there was an issuse with HDMI to DVI in the early days , before more recent firmware updates
( I posted this in your other thread as well )

Thanks for the responses!
I tried plugging in both DVI and component because someone recommended it on one of the posts that I read.
To test the cable itself, I tried using the cable with my Motorola hd set top box. No go. So the next step is to try another cable.
The saga continues
