I have a sony sr1. I like it.
at first, playback was an issue. So I hit the forums in here. Tried the demo of Powerdvd ultra for playback. It didn't work... Until I renamed the file extensions to m2ts. Straight out of the camcorder, the files are mts.
Kinda pain in the butt to rename all the files all the time with cmd.exe
Is anyone one else getting mts files instead of m2ts files? Is there any way to get the camcorder to change that? -Huy

Hi Huy,

The piece your are missing is Sony's Picture Motion Browser software that comes with the camera. When the software is loaded, it detects when the SR1 is connected to the computer, and then transfers the video files to the computer.

The files start out sequentially numbered on the camera like 0001.mts. When they get transferred to the computer, they get renamed yyyymmddxxxxxxx.m2ts, where yyyy is the year, mm is the month, and dd is the day. I have not figured out what the rest of the digits are, possibly a timestamp. Sony may be doing other file manipulation along the way.

Their software fails to install with my computer. I think I need to reinstall windows, install their software, then some codecs. Frustrating.
