I want to know if combing artifacts is common on displays that dont have a great combing filter? For an example i have my ps3 connected via component to my big 30 something incher JVC standard crt tv I think thats what you call them right heheh? It only does 480i! Ok I hook up my ps3 to it and using either composite or component ingame when playing if you look at edges of objects and such I see that combing effect.

Now is this common when dealing with interlaced mode? I does seem like its less noticeable on a crt base display than a lcd display running interlace modes, because if i'm right progresive mode doesnt produce the combing right? Thanks guys.....

Ps: my little 19 or 20 inch standard crt tv upstairs does it to...

A comb filter has nothing to do with and will not remove combing artifacts!

When an interlaced signal is fed to a non-interlaced TV or monitor, it is mandatory that full frames with both odd and even scan lines be constructed. If consecutive incoming fields are woven together with no other treatment to accomplish this, then combing artifacts will be evident whenever there is subject movement (may be after every field in live video material).

Combing artifacts are usually less noticeable on interlaced CRT's because the odd scan lines fade while the even scan lines are being drawn, and vice versa. Still, some viewers will notice.

On large interlaced CRT's, thin dark gaps between scan lines are more noticed by persons wearing glasses and/or when there is fast motion.

On my 36 inch I'ART JVC CRT i do notice that combing, the way to see it is look and stair at a edge of an object then move the camera basically side to side and you see that lines of black combing, kinda looks like the tips/edges of those pocket combs you can buy.

I just wanted to make sure it wasnt a defect on my ps3......
