Just got a chance to watch Chuck and Larry and was shocked to see all the stairstepping. Do I have a bad disc. The opening Universal logo where it pans out and goes to the HD DVD logo looked great, but when the menu came up, the HD DVD logo had definite stairstepping as did the rest of the movie. It was as if the movie itself was playing inside a window. Tried turning off the U Control and unplugging the network cable in case those were causing it, but didn't seem to matter.
Player is an A1 with 2.2 FW outputting 720p to a Sony HS20. And before you ask me to output at 1080i, I can't becuase my HS20 has a bug where a 1080 signal forces it into Memory Stick mode. Additionally, no other HD DVDs have looked this bad @ 720p.

I have an A2 at 1080i into a Mitsu 62"dlp and it looks OK at best. Not sure about what your seeing, but I did not think it looked great at all.
P.S. I did not know when I bought it, but my Mitsu 62525 is only 720p, but looks better with a 1080i input. I tried my x box, my cable box, and hddvd players and they all looked better in 1080i. Not sure why.

Do that, the stairstepping will go away. Most newer Universal titles don't play correctly in 720p mode on the A1/XA1 (I think it's something to do with how HDi is utilized on Uni's releases), 1080i mode doesn't exhibit this.

Yep, Universal releases have been a no-go at 720p on the first gens since I think Miami Vice. I think it has to do with the pip, if you turn on U-control when the player is set to 1080i, you'll see the same effects when the main movie is scaled down and a pip window pops up.

That's what I was afraid of. Anyone know if A1 2.3 fixes the issue? Perhaps its time I got the HS20 fixed.

Mine did the same on my A20 FW v2.5.
Also, the PQ/color is odd on this movie.
In the opening scene where they are playing basketball, some of the skin color on some of the guys look orange like the Ocean's 13 PQ.
You also see this when Ving Ryms is huging Adam Sandler when he comes out and says he's gay in the basketball court.
This orangeish skin PQ also shows up in other scens.
This issue occured on my Plasma and LCOS so I know it's not a TV or "calibration" issue as other movies other than Ocean's 13 didn't have this orange skin color issue.
