View Full Version : Slightly OT: RAID questions for PowerMac G5 TimV 11-15-07, 02:50 PM Hello all. Can anyone here direct me to a good forum where I can get some questions answered on connecting a RAID chassis to a PowerMac G5? Thanks a lot. Further 11-15-07, 03:39 PM Apple has their own forums which can be very helpful. Here's the forum for extending the G5: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=593 chefklc 11-16-07, 09:20 AM Tim, the problem with those Apple discussion forums is that it can seem like amateur hour, and finding anything of value can take forever. If you have a G5 Power Mac and want to add some sort of external RAID capability, the two places I'd start reading about options, adapter cards and external enclosures are Barefeats and AMUG: http://barefeats.com/ http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/reviews.html If you already have "a RAID chassis" and are looking for the most experienced users online, outside of our Mac home theater-specific group here, the smartest Mac users hang at Ars Technica: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb.x/a/frm/f/8300945231 Storage and RAID options over there are usually discussed in a hardware sub forum, it isn't platform distinct but often has knowledgeable folks and excellent advice: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/24609792 Good luck... rydot 11-17-07, 08:27 PM If it's a SCSI RAID, ATTO makes the best Mac compatible HBA (Host Bus Adapter) cards. There are cheaper options out there, but I use an ATTO UL4D (Ultra320) card in my Power Mac G4 content server. ATTO's website is www.attotech.com Careful not to get sticker shock!! gaderson 11-18-07, 04:13 PM For more reasonable prices and with more RAID settings (i.e. 3 & 5) are the HighPoint (http://www.hptmac.com/US/index.htm) SATA RAID cards for your G5 try PCI-X (http://www.hptmac.com/US/categories.php?compatibility=2) or PCIe (http://www.hptmac.com/US/categories.php?compatibility=3). But, be sure to check Leopard compatiblity--my 1820A (http://www.hptmac.com/US/product.php?_index=11) is not. |
