View Full Version : HD-DVD Demo material suggestions for CRT?
dropzone7 11-15-07, 03:24 PM I am looking for suggestions on good HD DVD demo material for display on a CRT projector. I am having a little get together next week while family is in town and everyone will be seeing my room for the first time. I only have about 5 HD movies so I need to go shopping over the weekend. I'm looking for your suggestions more for particular scenes in the movie which might do a good job of showcasing the strong points of CRT such as black levels and natural flesh tones, etc. If the movie happens to be good then that's just a bonus. :D
Thanks
draganm 11-15-07, 03:33 PM I've only seen about 3 HD-DVD's that a friend brought over but Batman Begins is really fantastic. The scene whee he's locked up in a Chinese prison is amazing for shadow detail.
kschmit2 11-15-07, 03:37 PM maybe Shrek 3 (for the visuals)
Hot Fuzz
Children of Men (good PQ, but movie WAAAY overrated imho)
Fellenz 11-15-07, 04:02 PM I liked
King Kong
Hot Fuzz
Batman Begins
...But I don't have a HD-DVD player yet;)
g-man5.1 11-15-07, 05:20 PM Don't forget Transformers, Sahara, Ant Bully, Corpse Bride. There's really a lot to choose from. Check the HD DVD software section of the forum if you haven't already done so. There's a thread rating the PQ/AQ of various HD DVD titles.
dropzone7 11-16-07, 10:56 PM Thanks for these suggestions guys. I do have Hot Fuzz and will probably buy Corpse Bride, Batman and a few others.
ImaStar 11-17-07, 04:07 AM The Chronicles of Riddick is fantastic.
newbieDAN 11-17-07, 07:46 PM King Kong
Transformers
Corpse Bride
I'd have to say Chronicles of Riddick too, I've seen about 20 or so HD DVDs and this one blew me away for PQ. Movie is not bad too.

Yeah and from what I remember it will give the audio a work out as well! I am adding this one to the list. Thanks!
lordcloud 11-19-07, 01:49 PM Riddick and King Kong are still two of the best looking movies on HDDVD for me.
ThomasW 11-19-07, 01:54 PM I would suggest Apollo 13 also... maybe not one of the very best of HDDVD-transfers, but it is a good movie and the photo is great.
MI:3 is definitely source material with some nice audio.
I always bring out batman begins to show off shadow detail.
You want shadow detail then Riddick is one of the best I've seen.
This is probably after the fact now, but 300 and Corpse Bride are two of my favorite demo HD-DVD's to blow people away with.
300 has plenty of dark scenes, beautifully treated imagery and a simply awesome surround mix.
Corpse Bride is Tim Burton stop-motion and was all beautifully composed and shot on D-SLR digital cameras... it's gorgeous. Zero grain, tack-sharp, excellent color and great blacks. VERY 3D. If your audio kit is musical sounding, the dynamic jazz soundtrack in several scenes is excellent.
Of course, Riddick (blacks), Batman Begins (blacks) and Transformers (audio wow!) are excellent choices, too.

louthewiz 11-24-07, 07:54 PM Transformers HD, yeah baby!
overclkr 11-24-07, 08:38 PM The Digger Scene From The Matrix!
dropzone7 11-26-07, 10:22 AM Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I used all of them and everyone was impressed. Of course, when it was just the guys in the room we switched over to HD Net and Art Mann Presents was showing the Exotic Erotic Ball or something like that. Freak show! Boobies in HD!!!
Doug Baisey 11-26-07, 12:31 PM Dropzone,
I'm glad to hear this get together went well. You sure worked hard getting it ready. Doug

Thanks Doug! I will have to post the final pictures of the room which I took on Saturday over on my regular thread. It really feels like my own tiny theater now.:) I think that convergence is my new hobby and I just can't leave well enough alone. The dark fabric surrounding the screen really bumped up the "perceived" contrast. I played around with the gamma until I found a nice compromise between good fade to black and an overall bright picture. I am interested in the new Moome XG card which would eliminate the need for my HD Fury and transcoder and possibly even the HDMI switcher which I needed ironically not for switching but for driving the Fury out from my receiver. Heck, for what I have invested in those pieces I could have bought Moome's card.:( Oh well, I suppose I did what I had to for the time being.
Doug Baisey 11-26-07, 02:11 PM I'm sure there are members that would want those pieces. Its a good thing for people that don't have a slot to fit a card into. Did you pull a HDMI cable or shouldn't I ask? Doug

No, I just have a huge breakout cable running to it right now but I have easy access to everything from the attic and it's only about 6 feet from the top of the projector to the closet where all of my components are. It's basically a matter of dropping a cable through a hole at each end. After doing some other reading though I'm wondering if the external Moome box would be better. I would still need my breakout cable for the VGA out though. I was so mesmerized by that XG HDMI Moome card that I did not even consider the fact that I would also be eliminating that garden hose of a breakout cable and replacing it with an HDMI cable! This is sounding better all the time. External or internal? Need to do more reading I suppose...
