I am looking to buy a non hd crt. Im looking for a 27" or 32" model that will cost me less than $300 new and will last a while. Maybe a sharp from circuit city?

Best Sony non HD CRT I think is the KV32FV310

But you'd only find it used.

In terms of PQ, the best readily available SDTVs that I've seen are the 27" and 30" Sanyos and the 32" flat-screen Sharp. The Samsung 27" is probably good, but I haven't seen the current model. I really have no idea what to expect from these in terms of reliability, but I'd probably feel most comfortable with a Sharp.

Sony Trinitron. Nothing beats it.

Have you guys forgotten that Sony doesn't make CRTs anymore?

You may want to consider getting an extended warranty on whatever CRT you get. I keep hearing from people who had a TV magically stop working just days after the one year warranty ran out. My 20" Sony CRT started having major problems when it was just over a year old. Manufacturers have gotten very good at designing CRT sets that "sense" that the warranty has run out and then proceed to self-destruct.

Maybe someday someone can find the proof that this has been done deliberately, and start a huge class action suit. But until then I'd get the extended warranty, even though I am not a big believer in buying those things for other products.

I'm a mechanical, I'm a mechanical, I'm a mechanical man!
That's an awesome song.

But yea, it'd be better to find a Sony SDTV off of craigslist.

Or buy the Sharp, I heard they last a long time, and it'd be new so you'd have a warranty.

But used SD Sony TV's are pretty cheap on craigslist.

Just look up 32 Wega and see what you can find.

I love Sony Trinitrons, but if you can't find one of those then my next pick would be the Panasonic Tau flat tubes. I think those TVs gave Trinitrons a run for their money.

Well I know Sony doesn't manufacture it anymore but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist in
retail, craigslist, eBay, or other sellers. I have yet to see something that beats the quality
of the Trinitron but some came close like Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, and Mitsubishi.

Then tell me which stores still have Sony CRTs.

craigslist, eBay, or other sellers.
Well, good luck to him. I never see late model SDTVs for sale in my area, and 95% of the people I see selling TVs on Craig's List are asking prices that aren't even close to reasonable.

Then tell me which stores still have Sony CRTs.

Sony still makes CRT-based televisions for sale in Asia and the middle-east. There was a link earlier in the forum which I can't find now. There are online stores here in the US that sell multi-standard Sony's. There are import and delivery fees to consider. But you'll be buying a brand new Sony Trinitron CRT NTSC television.

If you want something more local and affordable, head on over to Walmart or browse to their website and see what they sell. I bought a 20" flat CRT, RCA brand with built-in DVD player.

The ATSC tuner was very slow, it took about 4 seconds for the picture to appear when changing channels. Entering a channel number directly on the remote was cumbersome. It took over 45 minutes for the thing to do a digital scan, although that's only done once. The DVD player worked fine, although using the remote for menu navigation was again cumbersome.

The picture itself was rather dark, even after I adjusted controls for brightness and contrast. The high voltage power supply was noisy, there was a constant hum sound when the thing was on. The final flaw for me was the strange colors. On some channels or broadcasts things would suddenly look green. A woman with blonde hair would have green hair. I finally placed the RCA next to my Sony and did a side-by-side comparison on the same channel. There was something really not right with the contrast and colors.

So I packed the RCA back up real nice and returned it to the store for a refund, which was given without any problems.

Keep an eye out at SEARS for Toshiba and Sony CRT's that were floor models.

They tend to have quite a few left over(and are not replacing them since LCD/plasma is the way they are going permenantly), and are selling them at DIRT CHEAP prices.

They sell the Toshiba 27" at $300 or MUCH LESS. They even have quite a few Sony 32" models left as well.

These are NOT HDTV, but they are SDTV. They show standard resolution(480i), but have the built in digital tuners.

The Sony models only have the NTSC/ATSC(Over The Air analog and digital reception) tuners in them. But they are the best quality to most people, and the most reliable. But they are the most expensive.

The Toshiba, on the other hand, have all 3 types of tuners built into them(NTSC/ATSC/QAM) meaning they can handle in the clear(Unscrambled QAM signals) digital signals from the local cable company.

The Toshiba's are outsourced to a company called Orion, which helps reduce costs, and some say quality. But I beg to differ, as many others will do as well.

I got a 27" Toshiba 27D46 that was an Open Box floor model for $120 out the door in July. It has been fantastic, and a great cheap investment for a digital tv.

Look for that one in particular IMHO. It is a cheap excellent tv for the price.

But you have to look, take the initiative(talk to a sales rep, and you can usually wiggle an additional 20% off a floor model by saying it is beat up and used), and try talking to them. It usually works.

i have 2 Panasonic Tau's. 1 27" non HD & the 32" HD.

when i was doing my side-by-side, these had the best pic's in their class, even compared to the Sony Wega's --IMHO

I'd actually love to find a nice SDTV myself. Now that's I've got my HDTV secured I've been thinking it might not be such a terrible idea to pick up a cheap SDTV for my Wii so I can play Wii games and older consoles without them looking like crap. I'm broke at the moment however so this probably won't happen until next year when I get an apartment. Does anyone have any opinions on the SD Sharps currently at BB. I had a 32" Sharp from about 5 years ago (gave it to my parents for their anniversary) that I absolutely loved but I dunno if I trust them anymore seeing how quality seems to have dropped in CRTs towards the end of their life. If their still as nice as they used to be then the 27" at CC would probably be perfect (I don't mind the bubble tube personally).

If you are deciding on Sharp TV, better hurry as Sharp has said that it will no longer make CRT TVs after this month.

I have their last 32 inch digital TV (32SC26B) and love it. But one have to enter service menu to whip it into shape.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe that for a second. The Target and Wal-Mart stores in my area did not sell Sony CRTs even when they were still in production. At least in the past couple years, I cannot remember ever once hearing about Sony CRTs being sold at Wal-Mart or Target, and I can't find any indication that the last Sony SDTVs were ever sold at either of those stores. Best Buy and Circuit City put them on clearance and removed them from their websites ages ago. But somehow the Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, and Target stores in your area all have Sony SDTVs on the shelves?

Check garage sales, flea markets and thrift stores. Many people are getting rid of TV's like that. And you'll probably only pay about $20-30. Many people even are taking TV's like that to E-waste sites and they still work!

That is very sad. I'd love to see the look on people faces after they throw out their old SDTV just to hook their new flat panels up to their SD sources, thinking they're getting HD, only to find the PQ is horrible and everything is letterboxed or stretched.

BKCHURCH,

You are NOT going to start 50 threads again about the same subject again, are you?!;)

Just joking. :)

I have a Toshiba SDTV(27D46) that I got at Sears as an open boc/clearance model this past July out the door for $120(after a little hagling).

I like it alot as a CHEAP tv for a 2nd or 3rd choice in a house/apartment.

It has 3 inputs(1 component in, and 1 composite/S-video in in the Rear. 1 composite input in the front).

It is an SDTV(480i max resolution), and has all 3 tuners(NTSC/ATSC/QAM) built in.

It also has separate memory input. Meaning you can set the picture/audio controls to different settings for each input, which is nice. Especially for the differences in digital and analog signals, which usually have different settings for each optimal picture.

That is the 27D46(the 6 standing for the 2006 model).

They make a 27D47 that is available at KMart. But I have read that they have removed some menu settings in order to reduce cost(these are made by Orion as a cheap SDTV).

You should be able to find a cheap remaining open box model somewhere.

Sears also carries the FLAT TUBE MODEL(27DF46) as well, and they are trying to dump those as well to make room for LCD/plasma period. Also they have Sony's, and 32" versions of the above mentioned tv's.

If you ever have the time, try to find one and haggle with them.

They(Sears) are usually pretty good about it because they want to get rid of them as soon as possible to make room for everything else.

You should be able to get one really cheap.

Happy hunting. :)

I own a Sony KV-32FV27 32" and a Toshiba 27AF44 27".

The Toshiba picture beats the Sony by a mile. It's not even close.

JVC is the brand I would search for. I have the JVC AV 27F577 - CRT TV and the KD-34XBR970 TV's and must say the JVC has a much sharper / better PQ IMO. too bad it isn't a HD TV.

Carousel Center Best Buy in Syracuse still has a boxed 32FS170, sitting up on a shelf in a cordoned off area of the store. No price tag anywhere in sight. They also have a floor model 34XBR970 but are asking silly money for it.

yeah SDTV! just bought a Samsung LNT-4069FX that my buddy's buying off me next month. i'm using it until then, and i hate how bad regular channels look on it. some dvd's look awesome, some horrible. some games look good (halo 3, GOW), some look worse than my Toshiba 32" SDTV (Orange Box). Not sure the model of my toshiba (5 yrs. old), but it's a great crystal clear picture. there's a 36" sony trinitron on craig's list for $50! i'm trying to get it tomorrow! :D i'll go HD when i can get HD channels for free (2009?) and the HD movie format war is over.
