View Full Version : IIsue with room layout..
My room hich is about 20 x 25 has a wall that is not square witht the rest for the equipment etc. and I was wondering the placement of the 7.1 side and rear speakers.. should they be mounted high, on stands or what? the picture shows the problem.. I would rather mount to walls but with the left side wall pushed out I'm not sure how to work in the satellites.. any help?
BTW I am installing the Mirage Nanostats with an extra pair of satellites for the 7.1
Thanks!

I have my side on stands, and several people have told me that I should move them higher up the wall.
If you can get your seating position our of the center of the room, you might also get better sounds.
Michael
meaning move the seating towards the screen away from the cavity?
sdurani 11-16-07, 01:05 AM Any chance you could add dimensions to your diagram: how long is each wall, how far is the outcropped section, how large is your screen, etc. That will make it easier to suggest surround speaker locations.
Also, have you started construction yet (i.e., is it still possible to switch the set-up 180 degrees)? Any doors or windows to look out for (that would come in the way of surround speaker placement)?

Updated picture
The Screen will be a 116" Dalite scrren 16:9 and the projector will be a Panasonic PT-AE2000U set approx 17 feet back, natural lighting completely controlled by automatic blackout shades. It is the only possible layout due to the large bar/refreshment area behind the seating area.. the window on that wall prevented us from rotation. The layout is as-is.. now we just need to arrange best speaker arrangement
sdurani 11-16-07, 02:29 PM Thanx for updating your diagram; most helpful.
For a 116-inch diagonal 16x9 screen, SMPTE recommends a 15.7 foot viewing distance while THX recommends between 13.0 and 18.2 feet. If you can locate your main row at one of the 1/3rd or 1/5th points of the room length, then that will help give smoother frequency response. The other row can be placed forward or rearward the main row (up to you).
See the attached diagram of a typical 7.1-speaker layout.
I would place the side speakers directly to the sides of the main row, wall mounted at least a couple of feet above ear level. This will stabilize lateral imaging and keep the sides well separated from the rears. If the main row ends up being in the front half of the room, then the side speakers will be pretty much the same distance from the sweet spot. If the main row ends up in the rear half of the room, then the left side speaker will be a little further away than the right side speaker. Don't worry about this; during initial set up, distance and levels calibration will compensate for the difference.
The rear speakers should be on the back wall, spread well (at least 60 degrees) apart. This will give you good rear envelopment, minimize imaging reversals, and let you hear stereo separation behind you. They can be mounted at the same height as the sides; don't worry if they're a little lower or higher (our human hearing is not so hot behind us, so you'll never notice the discrepency). To get the 60 degree spread, measure from the sweet spot to the back wall and multiply by 1.2. For example: if the back wall is 15 feet behind the main row, then the rear speakers should be 18 feet apart (15 x 1.2 = 18). Easy.
Good luck,
Sanjay
thanks Sanjay, wiring stsrts tommorrow.. I'll post a pic when I get it wired.. ordering the chairs tommorrow from 4chair too :)
sdurani 11-17-07, 01:26 AM You're welcome. Looking forward to the pics.
Best,
Sanjay
Ok here's the first Pics, the 116" screen Dalite electric cosmo where cardboard is, SVS 12 Plus sub located to RH side of it.. going with all Mirage OMNISAT v2 satelites, center and V2 Towers to complete 7.1 layout.. 3 row of 5 Excaliber black leather seats, electric recline, and rumble seating.. set of 7" and 14" risers (2 and 3 row seating) Panasonic PT-AE2000U projector. using Rapid run HDMI cables with active outlets for strong signals.. 5 led based poster light boxes and mixed sconces and recess cans fill the ceiling, using sound board and deadning insulation for walls ..more details as they come in..
sdurani 11-25-07, 02:42 AM Nice! Are the windows required by code or something you wanted?
If you're up to it, consider starting a thread in the Dedicated Theater Design & Construction section of this forum. You may get some useful tips (e.g., how to use your riser as a bass trap to improve the room's low frequency response).
