View Full Version : Which of the "other guys" format would you buy?
iontyre 11-16-07, 09:03 AM In the spirit of improved format relations, I ask the following:
If you were to go neutral, or the studios currently producing on the other format from yours suddenly started producing both, which films would you be interested in owning.
I'm HD DVD now, but would like to own the following BD exclusives:
CE3K
Underworld / Underworld Evolution
Flatliners
Terminator
Terminator 3
Roving Mars
I currently own Independence Day and Terminator 2 on deluxe DVD editions, and since I do not intend to double dip any of my current DVD collection on HD DVD (upconversion is fine for now, I want the films I don't own!) I would assume I wouldn't double-dip those either, but if I didn't already own them they would also be on the list.
How about the rest of you?
sivartk 11-16-07, 09:20 AM I only have HD DVD (might change in a few day)....
Enemy of the State and Flyboys (available to import this month on HD DVD) are the only ones I really want to add to my collection. Some I want rent.
eapleitez 11-16-07, 09:48 AM Underworld / Underworld Evolution
Terminator 3
You can import the Underworld movies. Terminator 3 has been out on HD DVD for quite a while, long before blu ray. I'd rethink double-dipping on favorite movies. I plan on getting the German Terminator 2 HD DVD when it gets released next year.

Thanks for the info. Importing is a bit expensive for me though. I like finding sub-$20 deals when I can. I'll look into Terminator 3.
Steve_o 11-16-07, 10:34 AM I have only BD right now, but would love to get the Bourne Trilogy in HD.
Pradeep 11-16-07, 10:56 AM Would like Bourne Trilogy, Shrek3, Transformers.
Gordon Shumway 11-16-07, 11:00 AM If I owned either I'd love to have ALL flix I liked...not just a small select grouping.
Sad that we are still at a stage where we have to have a "wish" list for movies that are currently on shelves but some can't own because they own the "wrong" player....:(
Timothy Ramzyk 11-16-07, 11:01 AM If I bought Bleu
Halloween
Dawn Of The Dead (79)
Evil Dead II
Devils' Rejects
House Of A 1000 Corpses
Bram Stoker's Dracula
American Psycho
Night of the Werewolf / Vengeance of the Zombie
28 Weeks Later
28 Days Later
The Descent
iontyre 11-16-07, 11:08 AM Just a couple more I saw on the blu-ray postponed list that if they do come out, I'd be jealous:
Gattaca
Starship Troopers (guilty pleasure)
spectator 11-16-07, 11:30 AM I'm still waiting for a BD title I'd want to buy. The BD exclusives I'd like to check out are:
Cars
Ratatouille
Robocop
Spider-Man
Spider-Man 2
The Terminator
... but none of those interest me enough to want to own them, let alone to buy a player for.
Now if any of:
Alien
Blue Velvet
Chunking Express
Das Boot
The Empire Strikes Back
Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa
Lawrence of Arabia
Mad Max
Raging Bull
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
Toy Story
show up on BD before their respective studios go format-neutral, that's when I'll start to develop Blu-Ray envy.
mike171979 11-16-07, 11:34 AM I've been Purple for quite a while, it really is the only way to go.
Since a bunch of Blu Only boys went Purple with the cheap HD-A2 a couple of weeks ago. Isn't it only fair for some Red Only boys to go Purple with the Samsung 1400 only being $339 with free shipping.
I know its not even close to $98, but come on, its pretty cheap.
I mean I know a lot of the Red Boys, bought into HD DVD at a price above that price point.
And that wasn't even for a 1080P player.
I mean its basically the same exact price as a HD-A30, which is probably the closest comparison for it.
So basically, if you want a 1080P player, both formats now cost the SAME.
vinnie97 11-16-07, 11:59 AM Lost Season 3 immediately comes to mind, as does The Fifth Element.

Quality is the problem though. After experiencing Samsung blu-ray players, I could never recommend them to anyone but my worst enemies.
42Plasmaman 11-16-07, 12:11 PM I own players of both formats and thought that I would be buying more HD DVD's but I can only justify buying 3 disc's so far. None of the other HD DVD catalog releases or the current/upcoming Day and Date releases intrigue my interest.
I'll pickup Bourne Ultimatum but after that, I don't foresee any other HD DVD purchases in the near future or this year unless they release some older catalog releases I don't already have on SD.
For now, I mainly rent HD DVD catalog releases that I already own on SD just to see the movie in Hi Definition but I can't justify double dipping on HD DVD when I already own the same movie on SD. $5 for rental I can do but $20-30 for catalog I already own I can not.
42Plasmaman 11-16-07, 12:14 PM Quality is the problem though. After experiencing Samsung blu-ray players, I could never recommend them to anyone but my worst enemies.
I've had zero issues with my Samsung player and so have countless others.
Just like Toshiba players, you get some that don't perform as expected and have issues.
The majority of Samsung and Toshiba owners are pleased with their purchases.
BuckNaked 11-16-07, 12:20 PM I'm very envious of BD owners this week with the triple cut of Close Encounters out.
I'm tempted to buy the SD verson, but..........no.
MattGuyOR 11-16-07, 12:26 PM HD DVD only now, but really want:
Halloween
The Descent
Ratatouille
Rent
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Spiderman 1 and 2
Devil Wears Prada (shut-up)
Probably a few more I can't think of now. Not a ton, but enough that I want a Blu-ray player one day soon.
Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
For our english speaking friends that's
Nausicaa valley of the wind
Spirited Away
Both Miyasaki/Studio Ghibli films
I'm very surprised by the small number of BD's some people are interested in given the wide range and large choice on BD.
For me, I think I'd take
Clerks II (for completness mainly)
Coming to America (maybe)
Heroes:S1
Inside man (maybe)
If they released a remastered edition:
The Bone Collector
Tremors
The Thing
The Game
Mallrats
12 Monkeys
Happy Gilmore
Billy Madison
Sneakers
OggideM 11-16-07, 12:42 PM only interests from BD exclusives:
Pirates
American Psycho
Kingdom of Heaven (hopefully the hd-dvd import will come out soon)
Descent
Jay and Silent Bob
Finding Neverland
Edward Scissorhands
5th Element
Hellboy
The Devil's Rejects
no interest in Spidey, or Disney animations type stuff
on the other hand, there are about 60 hd-dvd exclusives right now that I had to have, combined with the non-existant 1.1/2.0 players in my price range, and that I already bought most of those on SD-DVD ages ago, I'll live without BD for a while longer.
alpha21 11-16-07, 12:51 PM no interest in Spidey, or Disney animations type stuff
+1 (and PotC)
The Descent (though it's the type of film where SD is adequate)
TFE
punditguy 11-16-07, 12:58 PM TFE
Casino Royale
Stargate (guilty pleasure)
POTC (only the first one)
iontyre 11-16-07, 01:07 PM I'm very surprised by the small number of BD's some people are interested in given the wide range and large choice on BD.
I am pretty picky about what I am going to spend money on. Can't afford all that much. So, I love SciFi, and that's primarily what I want to own. If you look at my BD choices that's pretty much what you find there. I only just got my HD DVD player, and own only Batman Begins (the only comic book hero movie I really like much) and 12 Monkeys. My shopping list includes:
2001
Blade Runner
Forbidden Planet
Clockwork Orange
Children of Men
Omega Man
Time Cop
Animation if fine for one viewing, but, like comedies, I am not likely to want to view them repeatedly, so why bother buying? There are some classic dramas I would like to own (Dr. Zvivago, Romeo and Juliet, Fiddler on the Roof, etc.), but as you know there is very little of that on BD right now. Frankly I don't see the wide range on BD, mostly comedies and actioners.
SomethingMore 11-16-07, 01:09 PM Finding Nemo
Sin City
I tend to forgot about other titles shortly after their release dates. Then, when I remember that they've been released, I realize that I don't really NEED them anyway.
The difference with HD DVD is that, because I already own a player, I can buy titles on impulse, knowing that I can watch them right away (although, I still have a few unwatched titles in my 100+ collection).
But the two titles listed above, so far, are the only ones that make me want a BD player. So much so, that I've already started planning to build a HTPC with a combo-drive in anticipation (I bought a DVD player when I heard that Nine Inch Nails might actually release a live concert on the format. That DVD came out nearly two years later...)
gorthocar 11-16-07, 01:30 PM Serenity
Pitch Black
Star Trek TOS season 1
BSG season 1
Shrek 3
Transformers
Jack Ryan collection
Probably some more, but those are the big titles I can remember off the top of my head.
I've had zero issues with my Samsung player and so have countless others.

The majority of Samsung and Toshiba owners are pleased with their purchases.
But the Toshiba player you speak of was $98. Not many problems with the

So after looking at it. I can't aford to go purple. Too many movies to buy. :)
kowhite 11-16-07, 09:37 PM I want Transformers, the Bourne trilogy. Oh, and you guys got Forbidden Planet...but I suppose that'll come sooner or later. Later probably.
Oh yeah...and The Thing. I LOVE The Thing.
Timothy Ramzyk 11-16-07, 10:30 PM If they released a remastered edition:

Tremors

I don't get ya, The Thing looks great and Tremors isn't out yet.
I only have HD DVD for the moment, but I do intend to go purple in a few months. Again my first choices from Blu-ray would be:
Kingdom of Heaven
5th Element
Casino Royale
Apocalypto
Ratatouille
And the Shakira concert Blu-Ray when it is released!
BaronVH 11-17-07, 06:19 PM The HD-DVDs that I would buy immediately in order of desire:

Big, huge Blu-ray wish list:

Star Wars
iontyre 11-17-07, 08:41 PM Just want to say how pleased I am that participants in this thread have so far conducted themselves very admirably, refraining from format attacks of any kind. Refreshing, yet a fun discussion. Thanks to all!
