View Full Version : G90: Analog or Digital from HTPC
wirespeed 11-16-07, 03:41 PM I play DVD's from my HTPC to my G90. I'm adding Blu-ray and HD-DVD drives in the near future.
I currently have an ATI Radeon 8800 (or whatever) modified with BNC outputs (4 years old).
Will I get a better picture with Moome's HDMI card and a video card with HDMI output? Any other benefits to switching to digital? Would I still need Powerstrip?
(Yes, I did a search first.)
Mastiff 11-16-07, 03:58 PM I was down that road recently since I am building a new HTPC, and I found out that I wanted to stick to regular VGA output. Of course a BG808 isn't a G90, so your requirements are probably a bit higher. Which could mean a BNC modded card. But as far as I could find out the difference really is in the cables. If you have good analog cables, there's not much to gain by going HDMI. If not you will have something to gain. But I'm guessing that you already have pretty good cables. On the other hand I think you may pay more for a modded card than a Moome's. So if that correct, I would go for Moome's.

Can you play HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies through an analog output? I heard the copy protection required an HDMI connection.
Mark_A_W 11-17-07, 06:57 AM VGA works fine for HD-DVD/BD.
I've found that straight, boring old VGA out looks as good (or better depending on the clamp circuits of the display) than DVI/HDMI out to a Moome ISS card.

Mark, what card are you using ?
Thanks

Mastiff 11-17-07, 10:38 AM I may soon be able to help you on that. I have one dual core computer with an HD2600 and one quad core with an nVIDIA GeForce 8500 that I'm going to test against each other the next days. I'm going to compare them on both Blu-Ray (Spider-Man 3), HD-DVD (Van Helsing) and regular DVD upsampled with FFDShow and AviSynth (Digial Video Essentials). I'll announce my finds in the forum. Even though this is with a mere 8" upper mid range CRT I wouldn't think that the reality is much different for better projectors.

I made my decision using a 6800GT.
I haven't been able to get the Moome ISS to work with my new card, a HD2600XT properly at all so far. It's all blurry - like a LCD at the wrong res.
I have a 30cm HDMI lead to try. But so far my hand is forced.
But the 2600XT looks great via VGA.
oliverg 11-17-07, 11:03 PM If you have a Moome card, stay digital right through.
You may need a repeater if you have a long cable run (if you get "sparkles".
The other issue is that as ICTs become reality you'll be in trouble using analog with 1080p. Futureproofing is a good idea - the Moome card is HDCP compliant.
Kind regards
cinema mad 11-18-07, 12:11 AM I use the new Moome (HDMI) IFB-HD internal card in my Sony VPH G series projector for SD and HDM,the Moome card makes A big difference in picture quality compared to the old Moome IFB-DVI card and it just blow's away the analog 5 BNC input's on my projector. IF you can, GET the NEW HDMI IFB-HD/gamma Moome card if you wan't the best picture quality possible from your Sony CRT projector, you want be disapointed,Curt Palm has info on these High End Moome card's and lot's of happy end users reported there finding's on the forum's on Curt's web site....
KrisRoberts 11-18-07, 03:24 AM With my G90 I use one of Moome's HDMI/Gamma HDMI cards for 1080p input from my PS3/Xbox360. It works great for them with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. And its nice to have the gamma since there are no adjustments to be made with those devices (other than setting reference levels in the xbox and rgb range on the ps3).
For HTPC I use one of JohnHWMan's DVI input cards. I like that since I can use the gamma adjustments on pc video card but otherwise go straight digital to the projector.
Compared to analog RGB I would say that the digital inputs are noticably better. My projector is a good 35ft cable run from the electronics. I did have to get a good DVI cable from BlueJeans Cable for John's card to avoid sparkles, and the HDMI to Moome's card has never had issues.
I've experimented with a bunch of analog vga cables from before the digital inputs were available. With a good cable and a distribution amplifier the quality is certainly good, but I've always had some subtle ringing that I could never quite get away from that is not present with the digital inputs.
wirespeed 11-18-07, 03:44 PM One benefit of upgrading from the BNC-Radeon card to a new digital video card is for games. My Radeon is showing its age on newer games.
