No, it's not a '50s b-scifi movie, it's our favorite A/V classified site. Perusing the latest offerings, I found a dealer redefining chutzpa. The link will probably get toasted, but you can find it for yourself if you want. But have a look:

"Eectrohome 9000 with screen
Asking $47500.00 obo
New Retail $19000.00
Condition 8/10"

Nice. Well, don't forget he's throwing in that Stewart screen and it has new tubes - so let's see, $5k for the tubes to be incredibly generous, and $2.5k for the projector... Anybody think a 120" Stewart is worth $40000?

The coup de grace is that the condition is 8/10 after having new tubes put in and being refurbished. "We refurbished this projector but did a crap job. And all we're asking is more than double original retail!"

There's also a Barco 808s up there for ten thousand. I'm starting to think I should buy PJs from curt, jack the price up 10x, and put them on videogon...

To heck with that! Seen the USD value lately? My pricing is going UP! ;)

But not as high as the previously mentioned ads. :D

(in case anyone is wondering, my above post is a joke, my pricing is going neither up or down.)

maybe it's a typo? $4750. sounds like a realistic asking price. 99% of the sellers on videogon are totally legit and know what they're selling and how much it's worth. Of course there's been a few home theatre shops trying to sell their customers Madrigals on Consignment for like $50K but they're just trying to keep their customers happy after unloading a new digital on them. :D
The few occasional bone-heads that wander over from e-bay are to expected too, sometimes a site like videogon can be a victim of it's own success.;)

I thought maybe it was $4750, but they posted it twice! And that still doesn't explain how it manages to be an 8/10 after being refurbished... sheesh, even if you don't want to be too arrogant, at least give it a 9! :)

Well, you know, all of my ex g/fs come to me as 9s or 10s. By the time I'm done thrashing, errr, I mean refurbishing them, they are 7s or 8s..;)

wouldn't count on it, Mr draganm. ;) - we all know that there is a dealer there who has been attempting to sell NECs for close to original msrp for over a year. And they too are reputable dealers - they have full page ads in Audiophile every month - but that doesn't make their pricing realistic.

why not - if I could sell one for that price, I'd be happy to list it 5 or 6 times, as long as I got the money eventually.

Just like the old saw about the man selling apples during the Depression (the first one) at $1,000 a piece. Someone finally walked up, asked him how he could stay in business, selling an apple for a grand. The seller answered, "I only have to sell one a year."

Severe pattern burn, eh?
