I remember reading a while back about somebody modding the Panasonic LCD projection sets to give them a better black level using some type of paper in front of the lamp. Does anybody know about it or have a link to the original thread? Thanks.

Sounds a little dangerous -- it can get pretty hot near the lamp, and I'd worry about fire or other damage. Putting it farther away might be safer, but I don't think there's any reasonable way to access the light path anywhere other that right next to the lamp, and even if you could I'm not sure it would have a better effect than just turning down the brightness.
