Let me recall the usage of this system. Is this for video playback or just archiving media files?

very good question! Actually both!

If you remember, I called it a Backup Station (that's why the Chenbro mini-ITX with 4 HDD slots) able to read smoothly HD contents (that's why the Intel DG45FC motherboard).
In the first place, I wanted to build two PCs, one HTPC and another for backup and then I decided to go for one able to do both.

However I wonder how the purpose would change anything on the answer on how to connect to it for management tasks.

thanks

If you play media files in this system, naturally you connect it to your large display via HDMI. You can control it by a remote and a USB IR receiver (this is a normal way to control a HTPC). You can access media files stored in this system freely (wake-on-LAN). If you install Windows 7 Professional, you can access it remotely (Remote Desktop).

I'm sure this has already been discussed but this is such a huge thread I missed it.
I am looking to build by first HTPC from scratch. Mainly going to be used for streaming movies from WHS server (and local hard drive) and online sources. Also going to be used for light gaming - nothing hard core.
A lot of the new motherboards offer what seems to be some nice integrated graphics for HDMI. Is this sufficient or would one of those new ATI 5700 directx 11 cards be more suited for my uses? Would the separate video card be overkill? Remember - I'm not going to be doing a lot of gaming - mainly using for HD (and SD) video.

I also would like some thoughts on:
-Cases (smaller the better)
-Audio - is the integrated audio sufficient? It sure seems like it is - or would an add on card be a noticable difference?
-Remotes and keyboards.

Thanks - I appreciate any input.

Mike

Check the low-end systems on page 85. I am not sure if IGP is enough for your gaming purpose. 785G is good for very light gaming. You can find lots of benchmarks on the Internet (also search with "780G", the predecessor to 785G; gaming performance is the same).

Audio: analog?

As for wireless, a lot of factors will determine how well it works. Generally I find that wireless N is ok for SD content but if you are looking to stream HD content then wired is the best bet.

I am able to stream 1080i ATSC (so very high bandwidth) over 802.11g flawlessly. I have a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT, if that makes a difference. Make no mistake though, the pipe is basically completely saturated and forget trying to stream anything else, though I haven't actually tried. This is also on a laptop. If it was an extender or HTPC (something permanent) grabbing content from a central server, I'd never ever rely on any kind of wireless.

You don't need that MB, right? Just the second one you quoted. I hope that drops your total cost down a little.

Win 7 - do you have access to anyone with a student e-mail address (xxx.edu)? Do you have an alumni one from your school? You can get Home Premium or Professional (32-bit or 64-bit) upgrade from Win741 (http://win741.com/) for $29.99.

If not, you're probably better off buying a family pack of 3 licenses (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116775) from Newegg for $150 and split the cost with someone if needed.

I'm ready to buy a HTPC type system today and have some very basic needs. My main concern is if I really do need a HTPC or can I go with one of the pre-built boxes such as SageTV.

Needs:

1. Play MKV movies in 1080p as flawlessly as possible
2. Audio is going to a DTS receiver via DVI
3. Video to tv via HDMI
4. Be able to access a few websites such as Veetle to watch soccer matches live
5. If possible, backup via wireless network occasionally to main computer. If there is an easy/cheap Raid solution I may use that too (any suggestions?)

That's pretty much it. I can encode on my main computer and just copy it over. I rarely watch TV and never record it so this is really just for movies on mkv, blu-ray/dvd playback (not nearly as important as mkv though) and some streaming tv viewing via veetle or other websites

Can I go with one of the low-end HTPC builds and if so, which is best for my needs. Also, is there any sort of less expensive pre-built solution I could go for instead?

To save money you might want to skip this, at least for now. I know the two aren't the same, but my i7 860 runs pretty cool (I know the 920 is a lot hotter/high wattage chip). If you're not overclocking the chip, even less reason to get the heatsink right away. Although a good argument can be made to just get it and install it now while everything is apart. That will save you at least $56 and maybe shipping and tax. If it were me, I'd probably just get it, but in my experience the stock intel heatsinks aren't as bad as they're usually made out to be.

Also, make sure it will fit in the case, I know it's tall. It will probably be close.

I have both HTPC and SageTV. SageTV is great as a media extender if your PC isn't in the same room. It's probably half the cost of an HTPC build, but not as flexible of course. You can do #1 above, that's mostly what I do. SageTV HD200 has HDMI for audio/video, so takes care of #2, #3. #4 I have no idea, but you can now stream from Hulu and Netflix so if you can access it that way maybe. I don't have the HD200, so I'm not sure what other web viewing capabilities it has. #5, nothing to backup from a SageTV HD200, it's streaming everything from someplace else.

I don't want to take this too far off topic and I like a great deal as much as the next guy, but this is intended for actual students, not just someone with an EDU email address (the following is from the actual purchase (http://windows7.digitalriver.com/store/mswpus/en_US/DisplayHomePage?resid=tOTRiQoBAkYAAGm7-E0AAAA1&rests=1257191501753) site):

Am I Eligible? Yes, if…
√ You qualify if you have a valid .EDU e-mail OR an e-mail address through one of the educational institutions listed here.
√ You are enrolled in coursework, current proof or enrollment may be required in the United States.
If you aren't currently a student, but have an alumni email address, you might be able to sneak in and get the price, but you're not honoring the intent of the offer...

Since I haven't been able to get the HT-2000 case (in OP), I think I'm going with the Lanbox Lite (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133044).

A few of the reviewers recommend a modular PSU for this micro-ATX case. I'm looking for a 500W PSU, minimum. Any (low price!) suggestions?

After the PSU, I'll just need two HDD's, and the optical drive. I think I'll hold out 'til Black Friday for the optical drive, and maybe the 1TB drive I hope to get. I'll need a small drive to load the OS on.

Renethx,

CDW is saying that the Gigabyte GA-EG45M-UD2H is a replacement for the GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H?

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=3021&ProductName=GA-EG45M-UD2H

Gigabyte told me that they wil "probably NOT" have any new socket 775 replacements and will focus on socket 1156 and 1366

According to NVIDIA, the 9400 HAS NOT BEEN EOL'd.

It "sounds like" Gigabyte EOL'd the GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H ... does that make ANY SENSE?

We need mATX, firewire, HDMI, etc. - exactly like your recommended GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H - what do you think of the X4500 from Intel vs the NVIDIA 9400?

Hello There,

I'm looking for a little help from the group regarding my potential build.

My goal is to have a HTPC to connect to my Yamaha RX-V2700 Receiver that would run Windows 7 Media Center to serve some internet content. This would also serve content to the DirecTV HR2x devices via PlayOn or TVersity. Additionally, I would want this device to be used as a BlueRay player as well. The HTPC should output 1080p and Dolby 7.1. This system is intended to be housed in a 19'' A/V rack. I'll be controlling this system via an RF extender and a Universal Remote. Specifically an MX-980.

It would be a bonus to have a Windows Home Server running as a virtualized session in order to do three things. First, to backup all the PCs in the home. Secondly, to serve as the centralized media server for iTunes and Zune MP3 devices. Thirdly to backup all it's content in two places- external HD and the cloud via Carbonite or Mozy.

The build I'm considering is below. Do you think the onboard video and audio is enough? Am I missing anything (HD is a big WD drive)?

P5Q-EM is as good as GA-E7AUM-DS2H. Or GA-MA785GM-US2H + HD 4550/4670 (better than any IGP). My preferred system is the microATX mid-range AMD/AMD system, no need of compromising with IGP video quality and NVIDIA's restricted HDMI audio. AMD quad core is the best in this price range.

Talked to the wife last night and we agreed that there would be limited use of the HTPC for gaming and try to reduce the cost. So removing that objective, I have come up with this configuration. Once again your expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Case: SILVERSTONE Black LC17-B - $120
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E7500 Wolfdale 2.93GHz - $120
MB: GIGABYTE GA-EP43-UD3L LGA 775 - $80
CPU Fan: MASSCOOL 8W553B1M3 90mm Ball CPU Cooler - $12
Video: SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770 (For True-HD and audio) - $160
Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS - $50
Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 - $95
Main drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD1600AAJS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s - $40
Storage Drives: 2 Western Digital Caviar Green WD15EADS 1.5TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" - $110 ($220)
Keyboard/mouse: Logitech Black USB Wireless Desktop MK300 Keyboard and Mouse - $40
BD Drive: LG Black (CH08LS10) 8X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-ROM SATA - $130
Miscrosoft MCE remote with IR - $35

Total Cost - $1000. Well, its close to my expected budget (wasnt for the 3 TB storage be at my expected budget). Better than the new Sony Mega DVD Changer at $950 (high end $1950). Doesnt include other software.

Additional Software:
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade - $120
AnyDVD - Lifetime - $161 (I dont have any Blu-ray DVDs yet, so this expense can be delayed)
MyMovies - Free
MediaPortal - Free
DVD Shrink - Free
PowerDVD 9 Ultra - $90

Is there a forum to discuss the software side? Seems like there is a lot of redundancy with Mymovies and PowerDVD.

@xager8on

You don't need MASSCOOL. A larger HDD is also very cheap (create a 40GB-80GB partition for OS and use the rest for whatever purpose).

Check also the ATX mid-range AMD/AMD system (DDR3 version). The processor can be Athlon II X4 620, $99 (better than E7500 in many HTPC-related applications). If you don't play games, the onboard video (another advantage of AMD) is enough until CyberLink releases a patch for HD audio bitstreaming with HD 5xxx and the cheaper HD 56xx will be released in Q1 2010.

BTW My Movies is for WMC. MediaPortal has its own movie organizers (e.g. Moving Pictures). You can launch PowerDVD from My Movies (or Media Browser) and Moving Pictures.

Hi, thanks to renethx for the awesome guidance and tips! I'd like to build a system for as cheap as possible, as long as it meets my needs.

My needs:
Windows 7 64-bit Media Center
1 TB hard drive
Record Live HD TV (at least 2 channels at once)
Rip DVDs, ideally in <1 hour
Play HD content (recorded or Divx) without missing a frame
Streaming (Netflix, Hulu, ESPN360) without a problem
HDMI out, digital audio out (HDMI will go to TV, digital audio to receiver)
Remote sensor

Nice to have:

Blu-Ray reader (ie, it's worth an extra $30 over a DVDRW)
Analog cable
Wi-fi
Bluetooth

I read up and, thanks to renethx, I came up with the following system:

MB: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail: $65 (after rebate)
Proc: AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX240OCGQBOX - Retail: $60
RAM: A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model HY63I1B16K - Retail: $80
Case: Antec Black M FusionRemote 350 Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case - Retail Model #:M FusionRemote 350: $85 (with sale code)
BR/DVD: LITE-ON Black 4X Blu-ray Reader SATA Model iHOS104-06 - OEM: $60
Tuner: AVerMedia AVerTVHD Duet - PCTV Tuner (A188 - White Box) MTVHDDUWB PCI-Express x1 Interface - OEM: $60
HD: Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard: $85

Total: $495

Questions:
1) How does this system look?
2) How can I make it cheaper? I've already gone with the onboard video.

Much appreciated!

renethx

@Mike Alt

Antec Black M FusionRemote 350 supports only microATX mb. So you need to choose, for example, GA-MA785GMT-UD2H (GA-MA770T-UD3P is ATX and lacks onboard video). If you want go cheaper, you can choose G.SKILL F3-10666CL9D-2GBNQ DDR3-1333 2 x 1GB Kit, $47. Otherwise very good.

renethx,

I choose the 1.5 TB drives to put in a Raid 5 config. I only want to rip the DVDs/CDs once. A lot of time wasted otherwise. My rationale for the other WD main drive ($40 wont crush me).

I have been an Intel CPU only user. So Im not sure about the differences between the AMD Athlon II and Intel E7500 for HTPC. Can you elaborate or point me to a comparison?

I wanted to choose a 57XX series for True-HD/audio capabilities. Not sure what the $$$ difference would be to the 56XX series.

I plan on using WMC as my foundation for usability interface. Then use whatever software as add-ons to keep it simple so that a 9 yr old can use it.

A good summary of Athlon II X4 is here (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3638&p=4). The $99 processor is 1.5 times faster than E7500 in x264 video encoding, for example.

The biggest issue of HD 5xxx is that PowerDVD has not supported HD audio bitstreaming from HD 5xxx yet. By the time a necessary patch is released, HD 56xx may be available (expected in Q1 2010) at < $100.

MB: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P - $64 (after rebates)

Since most AM3 socket MBs only support Dual-Channel memory it doesnt make sense to get DDR3, correct? Otherwise, how is the above hardware?

I guess I might wait till the 56XX series comes out to do this build?

In the mean time I can use DVD Shrink to rip the non-Blu-ray DVDs.

Thanks Renethx,

We already have several Q9400s and prefer Intel/NVIDIA or second Intel/Intel - bad luck with AMD in the past. So, is there any advantage over the IGP implementation of the P5Q-EM over the GA-MA785GM-US2H? Did Intel catch up and tie or pass the NVIDIA 9400 with the Intel X4500HD graphics media accelerator ... is that why Gigabyte is DROPPING the NVIDIA? Actually, when I called CDW yesterday, they gave me a great phone # for Gigabyte in the US 626-854-9338 (CS + Sales + Tech Support) and they told me that there were NO NEW PLANNED IGP based designs planned - it's NOT just the NVIDIA (I specifically asked about socket 775 for our Q9400 so it may be only that) - does that sound true based on your sources?

We want to avoid a discreet graphics card - if possible - and love our current E7AUMs (just can't find them anywhere) - so will the Intel graphics chipset equal or better the 9400?

Also, since we are using a HTPC CASE MONEUAL|MONCASO 312B RT, any truth to this forum "CONS" input from NewEgg - for either mobo - since we do want to add ATSC cards.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131336

Pros: Great board for the money. Very flexible with TONS of connections. Onboard HDMI with digital audio support. Seems very stable.

Cons: Putting ANYTHING into the PCIe x16 slot WILL DISABLE the DVI and HDMI. This INCLUDES a riser for a slim case. Avoid this board if you are planning on building a slim media center. or pick your case VERY carefully. This is the first time that I've been let down by an Asus board. Now I have a great media center with no tuner. Yes, even an Asus PCIe tuner in the x16 slot will disable the DVI and HDMI.

Other Thoughts: a different case would solve my problem, but I don't want a different one. Maybe Asus will release a BIOS update to correct this major oversight.

Dual channel and DDR2/3 are independent notions. DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 memory can work in the single channel mode or dual channel mode (or triple or mixed).

If you wait for HD 56xx, then you need to buy a mb with IGP (a 785G or 790X chipset mb). GA-MA770T-UD3P lacks IGP.

Choose either 620 or 630 depending on your budget.

Frankly speaking, I don't trust GIGABYTE support's answer and I don't know what NVIDIA mb they will (or will not) release in future. So get the best one available now. G45 is as good as GeForce 9400 for video playback.

How many TV tuners do you need? P5Q-EM has two PCIe x1 slots, aren't they enough? MonCaso 312B supports normal low-profile cards, up to four, without a riser.

What an amazing thread! My wife is tired of a PC taking up space and being noisy in the living room, so she gave me the green light to build a real HTPC. In her words, she's tired of living like a geeky bachelor. :)

My needs:
Record and play HD content concurrently. This is my DVR.
Encode HD content from TS/TP to H.264 in the background.
Edit HD content.
Watch Hulu, etc.
Small physical footprint.
Quiet system.
Relatively low energy consumption at idle.
Audio quality is not a huge priority (I know, blasphemy.)

Proposed system:
Already in current system to be reused:
1 x LG GGC-H20L Super Multi Blue BD & HD DVD-ROM/DVD Rewriter
- (I have both an HD DVD and BR library)
2 x 1 TB WD10EADS
1 x Win 7 Ultimate x86
1 x Hauppauge HD PVR model 1212
- (I have DirecTV)
6 x USB external storage
- (Currently have additional USB controller in PCI slot. Any recommendations on a good USB hub? Only storage here.)
1 x eSATA external storage

Potential purchase:
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 12MB L2 LGA775
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 LP
MB: Zotac GF9300-G-E
PSU: ATX12V 250W SFX PSU
- (is this enough?)
Case: Apex MI-008 Mini-ITX
- (needs room for 2 x 3.5" HDDs, 1 x 5.25" optical, and CPU cooler)
RAM: OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 - 79.99
- (DDR2 prices are jumping.)
- (Will the Zotac MB support DDR3? Doesn't look like it from what I read.)

System being replaced has the following additional components for reference:
GeForce 512 8800 GT
Core 2 Quad q6600

Total OOP costs: $548.95

I am completely open to modifying this configuration, but wanted to take a stab at what I was thinking the target system should be. Any and all relevant opinions are welcome.

cableuser001

You are skimping on the power of the machine. I would try to go for a Quad core and DDR3 . The cost of MB+CPU+RAM might be the same if you go for a quad core processor on a MB which takes DDR3. Right now DDR3 prices are about the same as that of DDR2 and they would reduce in future and you could upgrade.

Seems like there is a lot of redundancy with Mymovies and PowerDVD.

cableuser001

If you could go for an AMD rig, you could probably reduce the cost somewhat. For playing AVCHD, most 2GHz dual-cores would do. Go for a DDR3 if you can, they are coming down in cost.

G35 does not support hardware decode acceleration for HD video codecs, resulting in higher CPU usage. But a quad core can handle it fine. HD deinterlacing is still very poor, however. P5Q-EM G45 chipset motherboard is a better choice. Or add a good discrete card such as HD 4670. Otherwise good.

dbone1026, thanks for the links. I was planning on using either one as a plugin to WMC. I just need to educate myself more on creating high level folders, e.g. Science Fiction, Kids, Comedy, etc. to point specific movie types in order to mitigate cycling thru a number of pages to find the movie you want. From the looks of it they are alphabetized, but Id like to filter a bit further. In another example, I have Stargate SG-1 with all seasons and Movies. Be nice to bucket these in one folder by season.

Hence the rationale for my question about a software forum. 8)

You don't necessarily need to create high level folders to sort by genre (e.g. Kids, Comedy, etc...). When you use a metadata program like Collection Management in MyMovies3 or metabrowser (http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2009/10/09/gathering-metadata-in-whs-with-metabrowser/) with Media Browser you assign the genre/category there. WIth this you can then filter within MM3 or MB so you are not cycling through an entire list of movie. Basically I have 5 high level folders in my Video Shares, so this combined with my metadata allows me to group/filter as I need. Each movie has its own folder and each tv show has its own folder and then an individual folder for each season:

Movies SD
Movies HD
Faimly Movies SD
Family Movies HD
TV Shows

I know that on 780G boards, a Phenom processor was necessary in order for the onboard graphics to arrive at full potential. Is the same true of the 785G and HD4200? The Athlon X4 II 620 is waaaay to sweet a deal to pass up if I don't have to.

I have been reading this forum in the shadows for a while now. Getting ready to jump in with both feet.

My original jump into the HTPC was an ASUS NOVA P22. Lets just say I was less than pleased with my snap decision. I did add a SiliconDust HDHomeRun Networked Dual Digital TV Tuner. I love it, but I haven't been happy with Vista MC.

So here's my selection, pretty much the same as MicroATX 'High-End' Intel/Intel with a couple of tweaks.

Very good.

To install Geminii S, you will need Cooler Master RR-ACC-1156-GP LGA1156 Retention Bracket Set unless the retail box is the latest.

Or you could go with the microATX mid-range AMD/AMD system (Athlon II X4 630 is inferior, but sufficient for video playback; you can wait for a cheaper HD 56xx card by using IGP).

Crap...

Still waiting on my case, but I just noticed something. With my capture card and video card in, I won't be able to put the additional composite/S-video piece of the capture card in. There's just not enough space for that white connector to fit there.

Is there a 90-degree adapter for that white (auxiliary A/V 12-pin) connector? I figure that would work, since then I could run over the video card with the cabling.

Blurry iPhone camera pic of the connector:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/rig85/IMG_0128.jpg

EDIT: Also, I'm thinking about waiting until Black Friday to (hopefully) grab a 1TB HDD for cheap. That being said, I want to put the OS (Windows 7 64-bit) on a small HDD, with the 1TB as the media (movies, music, etc.) drive.

What size HDD would you recommend for the OS drive? I'm thinking 80GB would suffice, but if a smaller drive would work, I'd be interested. (That way, I can grab an even cheaper drive.)

In post #10786 I mentioned I plan to use:
PSU: ATX12V 250W SFX PSU
- (is this enough?)
Case: Apex MI-008 Mini-ITX
- (needs room for 2 x 3.5" HDDs, 1 x 5.25" optical, and CPU cooler)

I can't tell from the description nor the pictures if the PSU has any native SATA connectors, or if they are Molex connectors. I'll need to hit monoprice if it's the latter. Can anyone confirm?

Hi all. I'm still looking for a response to this and/or a response to my original post. I want to pull the trigger today, but I'm still not sure about this PSU.

I waited too long for a response. MB is OOS on Newegg. Also, like with most ITX solutions, looks like there may be a heat issue: "the nVidia MCP chipset would get up to the ~95 Celsius range due to the passive heatsink"

Back to the drawing board. I may end up with a mATX solution. :(

Does anyone know when Radeon HD 5xxx video will begin to appear as an IGP on new motherboards?

I am looking to build a new living room HTPC, and I'd like to reduce power load as much a possible so that I can squeeze into a uATX 270 watt power supply. This machine will only provide display and local processing. Storage is off-loaded to a seperate machine.

I have been reading through this thread for the last couple of days. I don't see any mention of the ASUS M4A785G-HTPC/RC. It kind of looks like the Holy Grail to me. I was looking for something to build a modest HTPC that would play Blu-Ray's and stream web media, etc. They even claim "Lossless Blu-ray Audio, Supports 192kHz/ 24-bit" !!! Any thoughts ??

It's a great question and I'd like to know the consensus on this board as well. Doesn't seem to be available on newegg.

In summary, the point of this mb is VIA VT2020 analog onboard audio codec (used also in a couple of new ASUS P55 mbs) featuring:

- DTS Surround Sensation: Creates surround sound effects from stereo speakers and a headphone.
- ASUS Absolute Pitch Hi-Fi technology: Utilizes audio components with an independent power connector to reduce electronic noise.
- Lossless BD "analog" audio (supported by PowerDVD 9 (http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd/hardware-support_en_US.html)). (This has nothing to do with HDMI audio.)

This mb is good if you want to get (hopefully) good analog sounds without spending money on an expensive analog sound card such as ASUS Xonar HDAV1.3 Deluxe.

You still need a good amplifier unlike MSI Media Live DIVA 780G chipset mb.

Unless you want DX11 (890GX only) or SATA 6.0Gbps (or maybe HD audio bitstreaming; no rumor on this yet at all), perhaps there is no reason to wait for 890GX/880G chipset expected in May 2010 (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20091104PD217.html).

Yeah, I have discovered that it has not been released in North America (yet).
I found a some of UK, European, South African, new Zealand and China import sites that are selling it.
There is one drawback on the /RC version - it doesn't support WMC, only their Mediagate s/w. Probably better to get it without the remote and buy that separately.

OK – so, very new to this whole thing, but I’ve been searching for good ways to record, archive, and burn live TV (specifically, football games :-) to DVD.

I currently have DirecTV, with Tivo. I’d like to be able to copy the shows I have off of the Tivo onto a PC where I can edit out commercials and then burn to DVD. After doing a bunch of research, it appears that an HTPC might be the best approach. It’s also worth noting that I’ll probably be switching to HD Comcast Cable in the next month or so, since I live in a wooded area and can’t get an HD satellite dish installed where my SD dish currently resides.

With an HTPC, I'd also plan to rip favorite DVDs to HDD for ease of viewing.

So – after doing some research, this is what I’m leaning towards (based basically on the Mid-range ATX AMD build in the September 09 guide):
# CPU: Athlon II X4 630 ADX630WFGIBOX 2.8GHz AM3
# CPU Cooler: Xigmatek NEPARTAK S983
# Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P AM2+ AMD 790X chipset ATX
# Memory: G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK DDR2-1066 2 x 2GB Kit
# Graphics Card: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4670 DDR3 1GB
# HDD: 2 x Western Digital Caviar Green WD15EADS 1.5TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
# PSU: Enermax PRO82+ 525W EPR525AWT
# Case: SILVERSTONE Silver Aluminum front panel, 0.8 mm SECC body LC20-S ATX Media Center
# Tuner: ASUS My Cinema EHD3-100 Dual Hybrid TV Card EHD3-100/NAQ/FM/AV/MCE RC PCI-Express x1 Interface
# Optical Drive: LG Black 8X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-ROM SATA Internal Combo LG Blu-ray Reader & 16X LightScribe DVDħR DVD Burner
# Wireless NIC for connectivity – don’t have hard-wired connection in Home Theater :(
# OS – Win 7 Pro
So – Am I missing anything? Any bad (or stupid) choices in there? Anything I need that I’m missing?
Thanks for any help - Turns out this thread is a newb’s dream (but a bit overwhelming)!

I am having problems to install the Xigmatek Nepartak S983 in the Intel DP55KG. The holes in the mobo do not match the position of the Push-pins of the cooler structure. The holes seem to be 1 to 2 mm wider and I can only set one push-pin. The other ones would refuse to get in as they get too inclined.

Hi,
I have been reading through these forums and doing research online for a while, but it seems that as soon as I decide on a set of components, some are not available any more (esp. motherboards).

I would really appreciate if someone can advise me on a motherboard/CPU for an HTPC with the following characteristics:

- Linux compatible (from what I gather, it affects mainly the integrated video: no ATI, which eliminates the GA-MA785GMT-UD2H)
- microATX form factor, SPDIF out, integrated video, preferably HDMI out, but I can convert DVI to HDMI
- stable, no need for OC, just long term 24-7 use
- (low power, quiet)

Primary uses:
- Play DVDs and in the future Blu-Ray disks on my 50" HD TV (1080p)
- Play music (SPDIF out) to 2 receivers in my house (already have the optical splitter and wiring)
- Play Internet video content and radio (e.g. Netflix, Youtube, etc)
- Act as a NAS for my photos and music (<1 Tb data)
- future use as a DVR (if I will buy a tuner card)
- back-up some of my DVDs / rip them so I can watch them from a laptop later
- future backup/transcoding of Blu-Ray movies (optional, slow is OK)
- low-ish cost (motherboard + CPU < $200 /~$160 preferable)

At this time I will use an internal DVD player (upgrade it to a Blu-Ray in the future), the Antec NSK1480 case (or similar) and the Gyration Air Music Remote. This setup should allow me to play music from anywhere using the remote.

I built my old PC about 7 years ago and I feel quite behind the times trying to decipher the new techs. Any help will be very appreciated.
Thanks.

Another good board is ASUS P5Q-EM. One way to see if a mb+cooler+LG drive fits the case, go to Newegg, download (or capture) a top view picture of the mb and measure the position of the socket. The size of a mATX mb is 9.6" x 9.6" (244mm x 244mm).

You'd better stay away from G3x, G41 and G43 (lacks hardware decode acceleration for HD video).

Recall my needs, from earlier post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=17466521&postcount=10775):

Windows 7 64-bit Media Center, lots of capacity (~1 TB)
Record Live HD TV (at least 2 channels at once)
Play Blu-Ray (will add drive when BD-ROM/DVD Rewriter can be had for ~$60)
Play HD content (recorded or Divx) without missing a frame
Rip DVDs, ideally in <1 hour
Streaming (Netflix, Hulu, ESPN360) without a problem
HDMI out, digital audio out (HDMI will go to TV, digital audio to receiver)
Remote sensor (I have a Harmony remote)

I spec'd this out on Newegg and I'm about to pull the trigger.

MB: GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail: $80

HD: Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard: $85

Total: $480 + S/H = $487
(- $20 rebate for RAM)

Questions:

Is the memory okay?
Is the MB okay? I chose the GA-MA785GM-US2H over the GA-MA785GMT-UD2H because it's $10 cheaper and gives free shipping (saves ~$3.50).
I have A/V cables. Any cables I will need to buy (e.g., SATA for HD)?
Any other flags or concerns?

@Mike Alt

A critical issue: the mb supports only DDR2, while you chose DDR3! I recommend GA-MA785GMT-UD2H with DDR3 instead of GA-MA785GM-US2H with DDR2 because the price difference is very small, UD2H is of better quality, and DDR3 is future-proof. Otherwise good.

GA-MA785GMT-UD2H comes with two SATA cables. If you need more, you have to buy them.

Hi @all

Now I have found and bought a board that fits. I have now the following setup installed:

AsRock A780GMH/128M board with AMD Radion HD 3200 graphics on board, a dual core with 2x 2.9 GHz, 4GB RAM and LG BluRay optical drive.

Hope that the setup is OK for perfect Full HD playback. First tests were OK. Yesterday a read, that the board is not the best for a perfect Full HD playback. ...I was so happy with that I found a board that fits and now I am very concerned. :( We will buy a 46" FullHD TV on xmas and I what to have a perfect FullHD Picture for that.

What is your oppinion about the setup? What will be an upgrade if necessary? I'm very gradeful for your advices.

This was cheaper to me than a dedicated HTPC. The main PC is an i7 @ 4.1+ (ran 4.2 fine for a while but during the hot summer started giving me blue screens) and GTX 295. Basically did HDMI over cat6 and USB over cat5 (for the IR reciever) to the next room. Going to run the cables and power coming in right behind the TV. Powerful enough to do anything I want and silent because its in the next room ;) Not that loud anyway because it is water cooled.

I am currently building my first HTPC. I followed the page 85 for a High end intel ATX instructions but put and Intel DP55KG with Saphire HD 5770 on it with vista ultimate as OS.

When I load the HD 5770 driver after the Vista installation, the computer crashes and reboot and keep on cycling until I deinstall the ATI drivers.

Even when I deinstall it and leave the Windows default Video drivers, it shows a warning sign in the system administrator for Video controllers.

I dowloaded the last bios for the mobo and the last driver for the card, but nothing seems to solve it.

Is there anything I should do in addition?

No. Good hardware is not enough. As Boxee and XBMC don't support DXVA, you will waste hardware deinterlacer. You have to use a player/video decoder supporting DXVA.

Hey Guys,

I am looking for the latest guide for building your own HTPC. Whoever started this thread has done an excellent job on the first page which lists a complete guide. However, I am not sure if thats the latest as it was updated probably in 2007? Or Am missing anything?

It would be great if you could please point me to the latest and greatest. Thanks

So ive decided to go with AMD and onboard video/audio for this build and im going to reuse my case and dvd burner for now and also reuse my old hdds so this is apretty budget build, basic needs are daily internet browsing, porn viewing and 1080p x264 playback supported by the igp, and hdmi output on the motorborard, that work overwork the processor, so heres my list of stuff im going to get...

MOTHERBOARD: (M4A785TD-M EVO) (AMD 785G/SB710) (RETAIL) AMD SOCKET AM3 $109.95
PROCESSOR: (955 - 3.2 GHz) (RETAIL) PHENOM II X4 / QUAD CORE / 32/64-BIT / 45 nm / 8MB CACHE / SOCKET AM3 $217.95
RAM: (OCZ3P13334GK) (RETAIL) PC3-10666 4GB (1333MHz) MEMORY $119.95
POWER SUPPLY: Cooler Master Extreme Power 500W ATX $67.95
HARDDRIVE: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 32MB $63.95 i already have 1TB that im going to be using
TOTAL PRICE: $649.32 i dont wanna spend anymore then 700$

so thats what i have so far anything else i should look into getting?? or any suggestion of what to switch out?

all prices are canadian aswell

Hi,
I have been reading through these forums and doing research online for a while, but it seems that as soon as I decide on a set of components, some are not available any more (esp. motherboards).

Thanks.

Why no ATI? I have the 9.10 catalyst running just fine in Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64

No. Good hardware is not enough. As Boxee and XBMC don't support DXVA, you will waste hardware deinterlacer. You have to use a player/video decoder supporting DXVA.

Any out there that plays ISO's off a network drive?

Excellent Guide -

Just so that I pick the right one -

My needs -
(I plan to run Win 7 Ultimate)

1. Casual Net browsing/listen to youtube/Pandora
(My current setup has AVR out connected to HD TV/Plasma. I am guessing HTPC will connect to AVR HDMI in? Or do I need another connection from HTPC out to TV?)
2. Play BD/DVD

3. Stream HD media using MCE (though my XBOX can handle this too)

4. Small form factor, low power consumption, sleek looking, quiet for sure

No gaming requirements. However, I really would like all my sound to be outputted via my AVR in 5.1..good quality.

Is the Micro-ATX section the right one for me? Like the low-range and mi-range?

Thx!

No.

Yes. HD 4550, HD 4670 (check Newegg for a fanless card).

OK then...Is a Sempron LE-1100 + HD4550 or 4670 will be OK for Bluray?
If not, what would be the minimum processor required that would fit on that motherboard?

Thanks

HDMI supports video/audio. Check the feature table. SFF: mini-ITX for small footprint or low-profile low-end microATX for better expandability.

If GPU hardware decode acceleration works (most cases), then Sempron is OK. But I recommend a dual-core processor such as Athlon II X2 240 2.8GHz, $60.

If your case supports a full-height card, then Sapphire HD 4670 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102855) (close to silent) or HIS 4670 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161288) (fanless). Well, this PC was at the beginning to build a NAS with FreeNAS server
But I don't really need it anymore, so I thought about a HTPC
It only has 512Mb RAM but I can add 1Gb.....It's cheap
I was already thinking about a new graphic card, but I wan't to keep it cheap too. The Sapphire 4550 seems to be perfect...The first one might be great but it's kind of bulky, and the second one is too expensive I think
However, I'm planning to buy this case:
http://www.athenatech.us/a3701.htm
May be the Sapphire HD4670 could fit...!!!
Is the 4670 a really better choice than the 4550? it's only $30 difference

Let me know

In my previous post (#10841 p362) I was asking for a motherboard recommendation under the assumption that ATI video is not recommended under Linux for full HD content. I understand this is wrong, right?

So based on the excellent recommendations and discussion on this forum (thanks renethx and others) I would like to go with the following setup:
- GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX ($90)
- AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor Model ADX620WFGIBOX ($100)
(630 is $22 more, not worth it, right?)
- Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864BA1336 (CAS6) ($47, cheapest I can find from a trusted brand)
- Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS 1TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive ($80)
(should I go with a better 7200rpm drive instead?)
- Antec NSK1480 case (allows 2 HDD drives, included PSU) (~$110)
- LiteOn DVD-ROM drive (~$20)
TOTAL: $447

In the future I will upgrade to a BluRay drive and add a TV tuner card, and maybe adding more RAM if needed. The 350W PSU should be enough, right?

Please let me know if it looks ok, if everything will work together/fit right, and if there are cheaper alternatives. Is the ASUS M3N78 a better choice (also a bit cheaper)?

I am ready to place orders tomorrow and I can't wait to start playing with it!

Thanks.

I just thought of this:

Right now I plan on taking the SPDIF sound to an optical splitter and then to a receiver (TV room) and a stereo amplifier (in a 2nd room) over optical / coax digital line audio. I assume this will give me the best sound quality (given good source files/CDs) - please correct me if I'm wrong. Listening to music in my house is maybe the most important reason for this HTPC.

So then, when watching movies, does this board (GA-MA785GMT-UD2H) output sound over HDMI as well? I can pass the HDMI through the receiver (preferably) or send it straight to the TV and use the SPDIF sound through the receiver.

Also, any recommendations for controlling the music remotely (from another room)? I was thinking the Gyration Air Music Remote, but I'm not sure. I am thinking an RF or WiFi remote with some sort of display for browsing the music library (preferably Linux compatible) - cost is also an issue.

Thanks.

hey renethx,

when are you planning another update to your HTPC list?

renethx
11-09-09, 02:51 PM
To update the list, I have to see what NVIDIA chipset (MCP89) mb will be available (or never be available). If there is no NVIDIA chipset mb, then I will have to change the classification of HTPC, something like this:

- Intel platform with (Intel) IGP
- Intel platform with AMD GPU
- Intel platform with NVIDIA GPU
- AMD platform with (AMD) IGP
- AMD platform with AMD GPU
- AMD platform with NVIDIA GPU

Platform = CPU+chipset.

For now read Recommendation Update (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17406925#post17406925).

4GB would be better, 800MHz would do fine (Edit: thought it was DDR2.

- Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS 1TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive ($80)
Personally I would go for Western Digital or Maxtor, and 7200. However, I am using a lower RPM myself and didn't see any noticeable difference.

Retail packages of HDD include SATA cables, else try www.monoprice.com.
Does the case include the power supply? If not, check something which has at least 80% efficiency.

Proc: AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX240OCGQBOX - Retail: $60
RAM: OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model OCZ3OB1600LV4GK - Retail: $80
Case: Antec Black M FusionRemote 350 Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case - Retail Model #:M FusionRemote 350: $85 (with sale code)
DVD: LG DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH22NS50 - OEM: $30
Tuner: AVerMedia AVerTVHD Duet - PCTV Tuner (A188 - White Box) MTVHDDUWB PCI-Express x1 Interface - OEM: $60
HD: Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard: $85

THANKS!!! Can't wait for my Thanksgiving project!

Well, you need 3 storage drives for RAID 5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID). 3 drives are minimum for RAID 5. And you wouldn't want to use your boot drive in that array because that would limit you to only 160GB of usable storage on the two 1.5TB drives.

And there is a big problem if you add drives down the road - you'll have to rebuild the array, which means a total wipe of all the data. So if you don't have someplace to store the data currently in the RAID array, rebuild when you add another drive, then move the data back to the new RAID array you will be out of luck - and the scenario I just outlined is not a fun one to actually do.

Have you checked the BIOS to configure boot sequence? The SATA port may have always been in boot slot 1 but never used so it was skipped. Or, somehow the BIOS got changed with the new hardware and needs to be set back.

Hi renethx, all,

you remember BackupStation + HTPC in one box Chenbro ES340 ?

In case you don't, here is one (among others) link of our discussions:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17266284&highlight=nalooti#post17266284

1/ I'm choosing the CPU: E7500 versus E6300 ?

Again cost difference is not important but generated heat/noise at idle is a deal breaker for me.

I'm unable to find a good bench comparing the two CPUs specially regarding the power consumption. The TDP for both is 65w.
I'm really lost in power consumption.

In the following link the power consumption of E6300 is 110watts at idle !!!

2/ Where can I find a good comparison of E7500 and E6300 regarding their power consumption and generated heat ?

3/ Few weeks ago you provided a link (unable to find it again) giving power consumption of similar CPUs only at 30watts at idle! Where is this link and how can this difference (30W vs 110W) be explained ?

4/ Since I'll also encode occasionally, hardware.info gives 92s for E7600 versus 98s for E6300 for encoding 60s of 1080p video into Divx. The difference is not that much and I could chose E6300 without hesitation if it generates less heat than the E7500.

5/ What would you chose in order to be on the safe side regarding heat and noise ? No matter even if I can't encode at all provided the HTPC generates no noise.

thank you very much again

corwiniii. So then what happens if a HDD in Raid 5 dies? Another rebuild required? If so, then whats the point? Or do I just stick with a Raid 1?

If 1 drive fails in RAID 5, you can swap in a new one (same size) and the array will rebuild with "no" data loss. That is the point of RAID 5. If two drives fail you will have data loss in RAID 5.

If that was what you meant by your question then you should be OK. If you meant you want to have 2x1.5TB drives today and build an array - and then down the road add in additional 1.5TB drives then my original statement will likely hold true. Without confusing the issue, there are RAID controllers (separate, expensive PCI cards) out there that will allow you to dynamically increase storage to arrays without losing data. I don't think your Mobo has that ability - which is how I presume you want to build your RAID array because I didn't see a separate RAID controller card in your build.

EDIT: yes, RAID 1 (mirror) is probably what you want because a) you only have 2 drives and, b) you will get redundancy for your storage should 1 drive fail, and c) this is probably much easier (than RAID 5) for your processor to handle because it will be doing the work.

xager8on
11-10-09, 10:45 AM
corwiniii. Thanks for the reply. That was my thoughts exactly for Raid 5. Beginning to think I was losing my mind. And that in itself is a different story.

However, I did get educated about Raid 5 needs 3 drives. I must have forgotten that from my readings.

Sigh, then again there is the rationale for a HDD Server.

Im assuming there are no issues with my build???

Here. (http://www.behardware.com/articles/762-3/athlon-ii-x2-250-phenom-ii-x2-550.html) The only difference between them is core clock and the size of L2 cache. L2 cache has little effect on video encoding. Choose any of E6300, E6500, E7500, there is no big difference in performance / power consumption.

Okay. So I switched everything around in the SATA ports, and I still cant get the WD15EADS to show in the BIOS. The only one I can ASSUME It is, is that there is a BLANK entry on one of the IDE Ports. It still wants to boot onto a Drive that ISNT my Boot drive, and I can't figure out how to change the Boot order of the IDE Drives. (The only option I get in Boot Sequence is "HArd Drive", not separate Drives.)

If I Unhook the new drive COMPLETELY, It boots fine.

**update**
After playing with BIOS, I finally found a Hard Drive Boot Sequence. The Boot Drive is set as #1. Still there shows a Blank entry where the WD15 should be. After moving the Blank one to the BOTTOM of the list, saving and rebooting, Bootup Hangs at:

"AMD data change...Update new data to DM1"

And stops... After about 5 min it goes to "DISK BOOT FAILURE.. PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK"

You mentioned jumpers initially - do any of the drives have jumpers on them? If so, make sure they are all set to "CS" (Cable Select) - particularly the newest drive. If it is set to "Master", that could be causing the boot issues you're experiencing.

The WD15 Has jumpers, but only relating to SSC and OPT1 settings...

And now, even as the ONLY drive connected, my Boot drive shows as a Slave.

This is a Windows install I presume? If so, google fix bootmgr or bootmgr missing. There are several fixes. You can probably just run the repair utility on the Windows DVD.

Hi @ all,

can anyoune help me with the CCC setting of the onboard ATI Radeon HD 3200?

I want to change the refreshrate to 24Hz for BluRay playback. Do anyone know if this is supported by my card? If I don't miss something I can only select 25Hz, 50Hz or 60Hz for 1080p.

What do you think about powerstrip? I want to use MP for BluRay playback. for that I have to create 2 profiles in CCC: one with 50Hz and one with 24Hz. The two profiles will be switched by a script. Can I do something like that with powerstrip?

The TV that i will be use is the toshiba 46SV685D which supports 24Hz, 50Hz and 60Hz. Will I have fluently movie? (please correct my bad english, thx)

thx for your help

In IDE mode, each SATA controller supports two IDE devices with Master/Slave. The boot drive can be either Master or Slave, it does not matter. (SB7xx has three controllers, supporting up to six IDE devices.) In AHCI/RAID mode, all devices are Master.

Try to clear CMOS.

24Hz is supported. It depends on EDID of your display if you see 24Hz in CCC. If your display supports it and you can't see 23 or 24Hz, then you have to add it manually in CCC (HDTV 1080p24Hz).

MP supports dynamic refresh rate change depending on the video stream refresh rate. So you don't need PowerStrip. Or you could use ReClock with a free refresh rate change utility such as 12noon Display Changer, SetDisplayFrequency (included in AnyDVD HD) or CCC's profile. Please read How so I manage 1080p @24&60? (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1147957).

Hi renethx,

thank you for your immediate reply. I have bought a license of AnyDVD HD but I can not find the SetDisplayFrequency in the tray icon menue.

Perhept my actual test-tv doesn't support 24Hz. I'll check it tomorrow.

Can you give me a link how to add 24Hz profil manually? Because I didn't see the option in CCC.

If I understand you right, my onboard card will support 24Hz if I connect it to a FullHD TV which can handle 24p / 24Hz.

SetDisplayFrequency.exe is in C:\Program Files\SlySoft\AnyDVD. It's a command line utility with simple syntax (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17510130#post17510130).

Just wait for a HDTV supporting 24Hz. You will see it in CCC. ATI profile is a set of configurations in CCC. You can save it and call it freely. Check the post cited above.

Been away for a few months, and now my head is exploding again with all the changes. Maybe someone can give a simple answer to a rather basic set of need(s)?

Going to rebuild a the HTPC in my Micro ATC case. Keeping all current drives. Here is what I need to accomodate, and I am happy to do this all with onboard graphics or an external card if need be, but if a card then I want one without a fan so as to keep noise out of the box. That is, I have absolutely no need for gaming on this box, using it primarily for HD playback, and photo and video management, editing, encoding, but I do want it quiet.

Hence, my open-ness to on board graphics if I can at least do the following:

1) Dual display support of HDMI out concurrently with component video out (using an adapter is fine, like I do with my old All in Wonder 7500). If this can be done by a MoBo with integrated graphics, great. If this need alone causes me to go to a stand-alone card, oh well. I just have to drive one display (my projector) at a capability of 1080p through HDMI while also being able to show the same content on a second LCD at 720p (the component connected display)

2) 8 channel LPCM over HDMI for playback of BluRay, etc. I don't need to bitstream the new codecs, and in fact, my AVR won't manage them. It does receive 8 channel LPCM over HDMI from my current stand alone BR player so that is all I need to do here as well.

3) Of lesser need than #1 & 2 above that are non-negotiable, is a preference that I can also send audio out via digital coax or SPDIF (down sampled if need be as would like be required to lower codecs).

Thanks for any help you can provide. I just need to know if I can choose one or more Micro ATX MoBos for this, or if not and I need a separate GPU card, then what card is available with passive cooling (I.e. no fan noise) to do this.

Okay.. fixed the missing bootmgr, but now I'm back to the original problem.

The new drive shows just a blank line in BIOS (Not [none] like the others that aren't there) and does not appear in diskmgmt.msc

I'm wondering if I just have a faulty drive.

I posted a thread a couple of days ago. and receive one reply. I still have some questions. since I can't post a link yet, let me repeat my situation:

I decided I want to build my first htpc. The main use will be recording television show and playing them back on the tv screen. I do not have a HDTV, I have a regular CRT SDTV that works fine. It has an rf input in the back and composite(yellow and white) in the front. hopefully I will be using the new cablecard tuner from Ceton with the htpc. My first computer I build a year ago might be just right or a bit too powerful to be used as a htpc, minus xp:

intel boxDG31PR(micro atx) MB
intel core 2 duo 3.00GHZ
Nvida geforce 9500 gt 512 mb
450 psu
2GB
Windows xp home sp3

I looking for it to be a budget/mid range pc, and upgradable if I decide to buy an hdtv i'll be able to record hd and play it back. I did get a reply:

Going to Windows 7 will help you a lot for recording. You video card is more than plenty for SD output, does it have a composite or S-video connector? Can you currently use your TV as a monitor? Get that working before investing in a cable card, realize cable cards aren't cheap.

The video card has an s-video output. Does the CPU have to be 3.0ghz or can I go lower between 2.5-2.8ghz? Also does the power supply has to be 450 watts or can I go lower as will between 300-430 watts?

Always best to go with a good PSU. No harm getting better than you need and one that is only 50% utilized will most likely run more quiet and less strain. Running a PCP&C 750W myself but my i7 is over 4.1Ghz and I have a GTX 295. Although for a dedicated htpc this i7 does still run 3+Ghz down to right over 1v, with a lower video card I would probably be happy with 350 or so as long as its a good brand.

I have looked at the specs of my actual test-display and I think you are right. The frequence-specs of my Samsung Syncmaster 2494HS are

Horizontal 30 - 81 kHz
Vertikal 50 - 85 Hz

and the new TV will support 24Hz, 50Hz and 60Hz. So I think I will have a fluent picture.

Something I'm thinking about: The actual monitor can handle 50 - 85Hz ...so, if I set my card to 72Hz (if this is possible?) the movie will play fluent, isn't it?

Thanks for the information.

Do you have a way to test the drive in another system or externally on the current system via USB, eSata, Firewire, etc? It MIGHT be bad if Windows doesn't recognize it as an external drive, but at least you'll have more information. You'll know it's bad for sure if you hear it clicking away as it tries to fire up.

RMA is always a hassle and usually ends up costing you at least the shipping back to wherever, time, etc. But I bought 5 HDD, and 3 were DOA; I returned those 3 and got replacements and 1 of those was DOA. So it happens with drives.

Thank you renethx for an awesome guide and all your hard work! Definitely wouldn't have considered building my own without it. I built a few PCs back in the 80s when the company didn't let us buy PCs, but have no experience with anything like an HTPC, so please excuse the newbie questions.

I want to build one of the low-end or mid-range microATX systems on p85, but I don't know which one. I currently have a 1080p HDTV (Pioneer PDP-5010) and a pre-HDMI Preamp (Adcom GTP-600) but currently only using 2-channel stereo. Here are my requirements, in order of priority:

* Watch SD DVD
* Stream internet video (Netflix, Hulu, etc.)
* Listen to MP3 library
* Watch ripped SD DVDs
* DVR capability

1) I conclude from the matrix on p85 that SD would require low-end AMD/AMD, mid-range Intel/Intel, or mid-range AMD/AMD. Given my requirements, how do I decide between mid-range and low-end, and which requirement would drive this decision?
2) If low-end is fine, do I need a dGPU, or is an iGPU sufficient? Your comment on the low-end AMD/AMD says the iGPU would limit to stereo, (which is fine) but would that also limit video performance?
3) I read your post on VA vs. MA, but I don't understand why or if I should be concerned (other than the VA picture looked better.)
4) If I eventually add a Ceton tuner card with cablecard support and watch HDTV, does this affect my choice of system?

Any general advice would be most welcome. Thanks!

1. Your processor is fine
2. PSU: Have at least 350 watts, higher is always better
3. Having Vista Home Premium or Windows 7 Home premium will make your life easier for automating the recording (a wireless remote might be useful).
4. You could consider a WD TV Live media player http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/641147-REG/Western_Digital_WDBAAN0000NBK_NESN_WD_TV_Live_HD.html
or WD TV mini if you want to seperate the PC and the TV setup.

If you are going to use Media Center and you want to enjoy "cutting-edge" (sort of, :)) software technology, go for 32-bit. For HTPC, Athlon II X4 620 is a better choice.

Check CPU usage (from Task Manager). If CPU is not taxed, it's not CPU. Loading a BD disc with PowerDVD is usually slow even in a good system.

A 4-pin power connector is enough for up to a 125W processor in my test. There is only one way to plug in the 4-pin connector to the mb's 8-pin connector so there should be no confusion.

I also have a PSU question.

My 550W power supply is modular. It has the 20 + 4 power cable, as well as a 4-pin power cables, and I think an 8-pin (maybe 6-pin?) power cable.

Anyway, I'm putting it all together tonight. The 20 + 4 pin connector is already plugged in...do I need to plug in the other 4-pin connector? I'm thinking I'm going to, since there is a spot for it on the mobo. Still, I thought I would ask.

Otherwise, things have been pretty smooth. I still need an optical drive and a couple HDD's. I think I'm gonna swipe them from another PC I have until I get what I want for drives (one small and one 1TB).

Yes, the 4-pin (or 8-pin if it has one) should go into the CPU power slot on the Mobo. Some PSUs have a 4+4 pin cable - use that if it does. IMO 4-pin should only be used if that is the only choice available on the PSU or Mobo.

The 6-pin(s) PCI-e is for the GPU (video card).

I currently own an HTPC, built it about 3 years ago at the cost of about $1200. It still runs fine, I still have the same needs, but technology has changed. I just bought a Onkyo 707 AVR, and I would like to pass audio and video along to it, to output to my new LG LH90 47inch LED TV/Orb Audio 5.1 system. The only thing I am really looking at keeping from my current HTPC is my Silverstone Lascala L16M case(ATX/Micro-ATX), my 4 sata HDD's, and my PSU. I am basically looking for a recommendation on Mini-ATX Motherboards that will give me smooth playback of 1080p content via hardware decoding, spdif/optical audio out, atleast 4 sata ports. Would like to keep the noise/power consumption down as much as possible, which should not be a problem as there will be no gaming done on this machine. I was looking heavily into getting the dual-core atom N330 Zotac board, but that would relegate my $200 HTPC case to the closet, and I would have to build another machine to get all my HDD's on the network, that is why I am needing a ATX/Micro-ATX board, preferably just like the Zotac board. Any recommendations?

Hello,
I wanted to know if it's possible to put the following system in a Silverstone LC20M case:

MB: ASUS Rampage Extreme.
RAM: 4X2GB OCZ PC3-12800 Reaper HPC
Tuner : Leadtek WinFast PxDVR3200 H
Video: ASUS ATI RADEON HD 4870
2X3.5 HD and 5.25 DVD Drive

Can I use the LC20M case or do you recommend something else?

p.s.
Can you recommend me on a PSU?
Yes. But the graphics card may block three HDD in the central cage. HD 5750/5770 is a better choice. Corsair VX450W, VX550X, Enermax MODU/PRO82+ 525W, 625W.

how can i get 5.1 Dolby to work with spdif out on my Asus-M4A785TD-M EVO?? im only getting stereo and 5.1 pro logic
You have to configure your player's audio settings. Select S/PDIF pass-through.

If you use L16M, then there is no reason to choose a mATX mb. Go for one of the ATX low-end/mid-range systems on page 85. If you use Onkyo 707, go for HDMI instead of S/PDIF.

Any thoughts on the specs for the Dell Zino HD as an HTPC (http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspiron-zino-hd/pd.aspx?refid=inspiron-zino-hd&s=dhs&cs=19&ref=dthp)?

As others mentioned, it should be fine. I have almost the same configuration and it works well. There are some adapters which you could find to get the other 4 pins, if need be (molex to 4pin power connector).
The 4 pin connector should work fine plugged into one side of the 8 pin socket.

I recently purchased this on Newegg:

MB: GA-MA785GMT-UD2H: $90
Proc: AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX240OCGQBOX - Retail: $60
RAM: OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model OCZ3OB1600LV4GK - Retail: $80
Case: Antec Black M FusionRemote 350 Micro ATX Media Center / HTPC Case - Retail Model #:M FusionRemote 350: $85 (with sale code)
DVD: LG DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH22NS50 - OEM: $30
Tuner: AVerMedia AVerTVHD Duet - PCTV Tuner (A188 - White Box) MTVHDDUWB PCI-Express x1 Interface - OEM: $60
HD: Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard: $85

Challenge: the PSU doesn't have an 8-pin connector power connector (required for MB's "12V ATX 2x4"). There is a 4-pin, but doesn't seem to do me any good. The PSU is the Antec MT350, included with the Antec FusionRemote 350 Micro ATX case.

Any advice? Thanks!

Yeah, I like the mac-mini style and form factor, but by the time you upgrade the box to a fully functional HTPC (more RAM, 4350 Video, Blu-Ray, better processor) it gets really pricey and you're better off building.

I have this motherboard GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H and a WD caviar black 1TB SATA HDD. When the PC comes back ON after sleep, this HDD disappears. This happened about 3 times in 3 weeks. The OS drive and 2nd HDD are fine. The problem is with the 3rd HDD. Below are the things I observed.

1. Doesn't appear in Device manager
2. Doesn't appear under Drives
3. Rebooting the PC gets back the drive
4. Checked cables, changed slots
5. This issue is not reproducible, ie it is fine most of the times, but once in a while this happens.

The drive is about 6 months old and while reading some folders it makes noises (may be a bad sign), but this doesn't explain why it keeps disappearing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Couple quick questions about my case fans.

So, my Lanbox Lite case has two fans in back, and one on front. All three fans have 4-pin Molex connectors. My mobo has a chassis fan connector (3-pin, I believe). My questions:

1. I have a cable with two 4-pin Molex connectors on it, and it runs to my PSU. Can I connect *both* back fans to this one cable, or do I need to only utilize one of the Molex connectors (and thus, use another cable for the second fan)?

2. For the front fan, I assume it too has to be plugged directly into the PSU, since it has the Molex connector? Which means I can't plug it into the chassis fan connector on my mobo? Is there any downside to that? Should I get a Molex to 3-pin adapter to make the fan > mobo connection?

I'm not an expert at this HTPC build, but here's what I did for completed HTPC (completed 2 weeks ago).

I built it mainly for watching movies and ripping dvd/bd. I have a total of 6.5 TB (internal). 3x2 TB Western Digital Caviar Green 7200rpm and 500GB Seagate also at 7200rpm. The 500gb is basically used for the OS and the used software. So in case I have problems with windows/virus/crash etc, hopefully I still have all the ripped stuff.

You can connect each fan to either a mb's fan connector or PSU (with an adapter). Usually connecting two fans with a Y-cable to a mb's fan connector is no problem, and as many fans as you like to a PSU 4-pin peripheral connector.

Thanks to b_rubenstein and renethx! That worked one bit of advice was all I needed to get my HTPC is up and purring!!!

A 4-pin power connector is enough for up to a 125W processor in my test. There is only one way to plug in the 4-pin connector to the mb's 8-pin connector so there should be no confusion.

I know this is a long shot and it may not belong here but here it goes....Does anyone know how to repair a optical drive? I know wtf aren't they damn near free? But this one is LG super Multi Blue a blu ray and HD drive reader. The drive bay door stopped opening and closing. I tried to remove the bezel because the drive would not fit properly in my case.

Lots of possibilities but by far the most common is a -slightly- stretched loading belt. Fairly simple task to replace if your mechanically inclined, finding a close replacement will be the hardest task of that project...Too loose, same issue, too tight will load down the motor and also fail. Same/similar applies to "too thick/too thin"...

Hello,
I am thinking about building a HTPC, but I have some concerns about the picture quality, especially of resized SD material.

A good quality seems to be possible with ffdshow + spline resize + seesaw…, but the HTPC should also be used for TV. And as far as I have read VA or TS hardware deinterlacing is better than software algorithms (yadif, …). The problem seems to be, that the hardware deinterlacing can not be combined with the ffdshow postprocessing.

So I am interested in the quality of postprocessing (upscaling, denoise, sharpen, …) that can be realized with modern gpu`s.
Is the quality of the new AMD cards, like the 5850, better than previous cards, and how does it compare to ffdshow or external scalers like the DVD Edge? An advantage of this card is, that the pc could also be used for gaming.
An alternative for the HTPC would be a Nvidia GT220 card, with the new PureVideo implementation (VP4). At least for linux (vdpau) this card seems to offer better scaling qualities.
Has some compared the processing quality of this card, with the AMD cards?

Issue not sure I saw mentioned - seems like you're trying to cram 4GB (or 8GB) RAM into there with Win 7 32-bit. 32-bit OS will not be able to use all that in the way you think it will. It will effectively only allow you to have something less than 4GB TOTAL system memory (RAM+GPU+CPU CACHE) available for applications. So, if you want to use all that RAM, get a 64-bit OS or drop down to <4GB RAM for now.

1) Ripping will be slower (probably) with the slower drives (the write speed); but for playing movies (read speed) is OK IMO. Just make sure to format in largest clusters, like 64K or more if possible in either case. This is best for mass storage of large files - NOT good for the OS drive though. Use the standard cluster there. I can't speak to gaming, but as you probably know faster is usually preferred by hardcore gamers. Those VelociRaptors are 10K drives and many of them are moving to SSD.

2) Yes, if you're going to use RAID, use the 2x1TB drives and leave the 640GB alone. You want to RAID drives of similar size so you don't lose GB when it sets up the array based on the lowest common denominator (640GB drive). RAID 5 would net you 2x640GB total storage on those three drives. RAID 1 will net you 1TB total storage on the two 1TB drives. IMO I think this is a waste of storage if you own the DVDs. Worst case 1 drive fails and you have to re-rip the DVDs, which honestly IMO is worth the time versus the RAID 1 benefit. I have a RAID 5 with 5x1TB drives for 3.75TB total storage - THAT becomes a nightmare of time:cost in re-ripping IMO. Also, since I don't see a RAID controller card in your build, if you use RAID the CPU will be doing the work and it might impact overall system performance.

I hope that helps and I'm not mistaken. I'm a bit tired at the moment!

Isn't ripping not usually gated by HDD speed, but optical drive speed?

I don't know what the bottleneck will be there, but you're probably correct.

So then it would be better of to configure my sata drives as IDE or AHCI?

Since I haven't looked at your Mobo and drives I'm going to defer that answer to someone else. If you're using onboard RAID, I think you'll have to set it to RAID anyway. I don't use that so I'm not sure.

Otherwise, it has been MY experience (note MY experience) IDE is fine and usually easier to manage for 98% of users out there. AHCI works if the mobo and drives support it, but really there are few real world benefits to desktop computers. IMO - others will disagree.

Best to make the decision before you install the OS, although I know there are work arounds to change post-install.

I think I'm finally going to bite the bullet after a few weeks of research. Please give me thoughs as to this will be enough for my needs:

Primary being used for as a movie player SD and HD content (1080P a must)
Will be ripping all movies with this box - SD and HD (Blu-Ray)
Will probably run MediaPortal on top of Windows 7
I am looking to just have to output a single HDMI from the system to my AVR

Here is the system:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD

Video Card: On-board ATI HD 4200

Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core

Ram: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"

Case: Since I am not 100% happy with any case for now I will just be using an old case since the system will be in a wall rack hidden anyway.

Remote: Anyware GP-IR01BK Windows Vista Infrared MCE

Blu-Ray Drive: Suggestions? <-- never used one for a PC, please help. I would like to use this to be a Blu-Ray player too, but I am worried about how loud most pc drives are....any quite Blu-Ray drives out there? Also, how fast are PCs with Blu-Ray drives playback compare to standalone players? Quality vs standalone?

If I decide to build one of the recommended mini-itx systems from page 85, will a HD 5750 card fit? I want to be able to get the full HD audio from blue-rays.

I want to build a two box Windows Home Server config to fit within shelf space limited to shelf size 22” wide x 22” deep (multiple shelves adjustable heights) thus this “two box” proposed solution. Please review intended config below and comment. (I have guessed on lots of components):

MAIN BOX (I already own asterisk items):
• * Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H AM2+ AMD 785G chipset
• * ATXMemory: A-DATA ADQVE1A16K DDR2-800 2 x 1GB Kit, $32.
• *Graphics: Radeon HD 4200 (integrated in the chipset), $0.
• OpSys SW: Windows Home Server
• *PSU: Seasonic SS-430GM Active PFC F3 Modular
• *CPU: AMD Athlon 64X2, ADO4800DDBOX, 65 watt
• *CPU Cooler: Silverstone NT07 – AM2, Super low profile
• *OpSys HDD: Hitachi Deskstar Sata2, 250gb, 7200rmp, HDT722525DLA380
• WHS Storage HDDs: Five SAMSUNG EcoGreen F2 HD154UI 1.5TB
• *Case: Cooler Master CM Media, 281
• Port Multiplier Controller Cards: Three Addonics ADSA3GPX1-2E PCIe cards each with 2 external eSATA II RAID5/JBOD PCI Express controllers, low profile bracket, Driver CD, User guide

15 HDD STORAGE BOX (All Addonics, and Samsung HDD)
• SR460S Storage Rack base unit with 460W ATX power supply, $335
• AE5RCS35NSA Disk Array 5SA x 3, $387
• AD5SARPM-E eSATA Port Multiplier for Rackmount Systems x 3, $240
• Fifteen HDD SAMSUNG EcoGreen F2 HD154UI 1.5TB
• Addonics cables to connect the two boxes.
Should work fine.

You could build a 30 HDD two-box system.

A simpler and cheaper (by ~$200) way is build two identical 15-HDD WHS systems, each of which consists of:

- CPU: Athlon dual core
- MB: GIGABYTE GA-MA785G-UD3H AM2+ AMD 785G chipset ATX
- RAM: DDR2-800 2 x 1GB
- Graphics: onboard
- HBA0: MonoPrice 2530 2-port SATA RAID Controller PCI Express x1 Card, $14.
- HBA1: MonoPrice 2530 2-port SATA RAID Controller PCI Express x1 Card, $14.
- HBA2: MonoPrice 2530 2-port SATA RAID Controller PCI Express x1 Card, $14.
- HBA3: MonoPrice 2530 2-port SATA RAID Controller PCI Express x1 Card, $14.
- HBA4: MonoPrice 2530 2-port SATA RAID Controller PCI Express x1 Card, $14. (2x5+6=16 HDDs)
- PSU: 450W
- Case: Cooler Master Centurion 590 RC-590-KKN1-GP ATX (9 x 5.25” bay), $50, with
Athena Power BP-SATA3051B 5-in-3 backplane, $110.
Athena Power BP-SATA3051B 5-in-3 backplane, $110.
Athena Power BP-SATA3051B 5-in-3 backplane, $110.
- A bunch of SATA cables.
- OS: WHS

In the second system you have to add CPU/MB/RAM/OS ($60+$90+$50+$100=$300), but the total costs of the two boxes is ~$200 cheaper than a 30 HDD two-box system.

Hi
My mobo works fine with 1x512Mb (PC6400), works fine with 1x1Gb (PC6400 "Patriot") as well but won't boot with 2x1Gb (PC6400). It's beeping, that's it...!!!
I know the 2x1Gb PC6400 work fine in my other PC (Intel E6750)
What's wrong with my ECS mobo? What should I check in the Bios?
Any idea?

Thanks

Great suggestions Renethx!. I will go with your suggestions including Cooler Master 590 chassis, build both boxes now, but not populate second box with real hdd until I get close to needing them. Several questions:

1. On which drive should WHS software be installed and should the drives be Raid?

2. Is is ok to use FlexRaid software with this config in addition to WHS?

3. What are several possible USA online sources for cables and brackets?

4. Will either of the following 5 in 3 blackplanes be suitable instead of the Athena Power? The blackplanes I propose have 3 year warranty instead on 1 year and fans can be changed to less noisy fans, but both alternatives have slightly more depth and other minor size differences:
- SuperMicro CSE-M35T http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/mobilerack/CSE-M35TQ.cfm
- Icy Dock MB455 SPF http://www.icydock.com/product/mb455spf.html

Hi @ all,

today I have tested the hybernation (XP) on my HTPC and my problem is, that the HTPC go into hybernation very well but when I wake it up, the resume screen appears and after that I get a black screen.

I have already googled the problem but I can't finde anything helpful.

I have a AsRock mainboard and the Moneual Case (perhaps it's caused by the remout?).

So, can anyone help me?

1. The minimum size of the primary HDD where OS is installed (in a 20GB partition) is 70GB. Since Power Pack 1, the requirement of large landing zone has gone. So I think a 70GB HDD is enough. In your case use the 250GB HDD as the primary hard drive (of which 20GB will be used for OS automatically and the rest for the primary data partition).

2. Yes. Check this simple tutorial Guide to FlexRAID + WHS (Windows Home Server) (http://www.openegg.org/forums/forums/show/2.page), and the long thread FlexRAID on WHS (http://www.openegg.org/forums/posts/list/28.page).

3. Click the links in my previous post.

4. Basically any 5-in-3 backplane should work (as the drive bay size is standardized) possibly with slight case mod.

Also check my previous post for a simple solution.

Just wanted to give the OP many thanks, again. I grabbed a 320 GB HDD and optical drive last night, and got my HTPC built in a couple hours! I was excited when I first pressed the power button. No issues, as it powered up like a champ!

The *only* issue I have with it is that the HDD light isn't working on front. The power light and other LED's are working just fine. I've double checked the connection in the machine. I'm wondering if maybe the bulb is bad?

Still, that's the only thing I have had any issue with. It's running quietly, cool, and it's fast!

I installed the software of this remote and i connect the 4pin usb of the remote whith a usb port on my mainbouad. It is shown in the Device Manager as USB Serial Converter. Is this OK? I thought that is has benn shown as MCE Remote Contorl.

Have anyone an idea of get this remote working with the hybernation mode?

Possibly a bit off topic? But, I'm also using my HTPC for video conversion. Does anyone know of a good video converter (like Handbrake) that has a web gui interface? That sure would make it easier to initiate remote encoding on my HTPC from another computer.

Thanks for replying, I will do some research into the loading belt, it all ready doesn't work so what more harm could be done?

Lots of possibilities but by far the most common is a -slightly- stretched loading belt. Fairly simple task to replace if your mechanically inclined, finding a close replacement will be the hardest task of that project...Too loose, same issue, too tight will load down the motor and also fail. Same/similar applies to "too thick/too thin"...

__________
Introduction
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

As the recommendation list ever increases, some of you may need further recommandations from the recommended list. Here are a couple of important factors that you should consider to select a system.

Form Factor (Size)

A form factor specifies the phyiscal dimensions of a system. Basically it is the motherboard form factor that defines the overall size of a system. There are dozens of standardized form factors. Among them we will be concerned with the following three most popluar form factors.

Mini-ITX: 170mm x 170mm (6.7″ x 6.7″)
MicroATX: 244mm x 244mm (9.6″ x 9.6″)
ATX: 305mm x 244mm (12″ x 9.6″)
Here is a picture of a motherboard/case of each form factor, Mini-ITX, micorATX, ATX, from left to right.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=158930&stc=1&d=1258888412

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=158932&stc=1&d=1258888939

FYI the model number of each motherboard/case in the picture is:

Form Factor|Motherboard|Case|Case Size
Mini-ITX|Zotac GF9300-G-E|Apex MI-008|W220 x H129 x D300 mm
MicroATX|GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H|Antec Fusion Remote|W445 x H145 x D414 mm
ATX|ASUS P7P55D EVO|Zalman HD503|W450 x H170 x D455 mm

The AVR in the picture is ONKYO TX-NA807 (W435 x H199 x D436 mm).

Because of size, Mini-ITX provides the least expandability (0 or 1 expansion slot), usually 2 memory slots and CPU support is often limited by the cooling performance of a small Mini-ITX case. MicroATX supports up to 4 expansion slots, while ATX supports up to 7 exapnsion slots. Usually a Mini-ITX/microATX motherboard comes with an integrated graphics so that you may not need to use a discrete graphic card. You need to consider the number of expansion cards you will need in future before deciding the form factor.
