View Full Version : HDMI Cable Questions
So got my new LCD HDTV, A3 HD-DvD Player, HDTV Cable/DVR Box.
Now I heard that I should hook them up via HDMI.
Does it matter what HDMI Cable I get? And Any suggestions?
Or should I just buy Monster Cables? and which 1 if so?

just buy all your cables from monoprice.com or riteav.com and u should be good to go. no need to buy expensive cables. the 5 dollar cables work just as good as the 100 dollar monster cables. with hdmi it either works or it dosen't because it digital.
WoW! The Monoprice Cables are dirt cheap compared to Monster!
thing is there are so many HDMI 1.3 cables there and most say for inwall use.
Which one should I get?
I probably just need 6' the most.
And whats AWG?
Which one should I get?At only 6', get ANY ONE you want! And whats AWG?"American Wire Gauge".
The bigger the number, the thinner the wire. Household wiring is usually 14ga. Lamp cord is typically 18ga. The wire used to wind guitar pickups is often 46ga.
For a 6' run, the basic Monoprice 28AWG cable should work fine. All my components are close to one another on a single shelf unit, so I use some 1.5' and 3' ones with my HDMI switcher. I've used a 6' one in the past because it came with my Oppo DVD player. The only reason I don't use the 6' any more is because a 3' is neater in my setup. It doesn't hang out as much from the back of my shelves.
There are people on other forums claiming I need a "CL2" cable for 1080p. This doesn't appear to be the case looking at Monoprice's cable specifications tab and I just wanted to confirm.
This is for a <6' run to a 1080p Panasonic plasma.
Nope, CL2 has nothing to do with what signal the cable can carry -- CL2 is a fire rating, which is relevant for cables that will be installed in-wall.
I would venture to say that ANY 6' HDMI cable should have NO trouble passing 1080p.
Thank you very much, I love weeding through all the misinformation that flies around the internet.
mjones73 11-19-07, 10:51 AM A number of their cables are CL2 rated right in the description, they would be good to use if the cable was going in a wall, if not just about any HDMI should be fine.
BadAss88GT 11-19-07, 09:39 PM So, at Best Buy I was told that only Monster Cables are good for 1080p. I take it they fed me a line of crap?
mjones73 11-19-07, 10:06 PM Of course, they make a lot of profit off Mon$ter cables.
Absolutely. They charge you what, $75? You can get a comparable cable from monoprice for $6.
Complete and utter CRAP.
They make more profit on the cables than they do on the flat screen!
I just ran into some guy at work that spent 120 bucks on an HDMI cable.
He said he bought it because the guy at the store said it was "rated" for 120mhz hd displays.
just wow.
jake809 11-21-07, 07:02 PM Hehe.........I went to Radio Shack today to pick up my first HDMI cable. As usual, as soon as I walked in, I was attacked by the sales people, asking me what I was looking for:rolleyes:. So, I entertained the question with a question of where there HDMI cables were located. The saleskid hesitates first and then brings me to the monster cable display. He pulls the Monster HDMI off the wall and hands it to me and says, "here you go". I look at the price and it was $90.00!!.
I asked him if they had any other HDMI's, he hesitated again and said, "yes, but this(Monster) will give the best picture, the other one I have will make you picture look like your watching a VHS". I called BS to him and asked him where the other cable was. Unfortunetly they only had Radio Shack Gold at $49.00:(. I'll use it for now, get a cheaper cable elsewhere and return this one.
It really irritates me when sales people do that!

As a former employee of a nationally-known electronics retailer..I can tell you...if RS salesfolk work on commission....THAT'S why he/she wants to sell M* Cables.....I could make nearly as much commission on ONE M* cable as on an entire CRT sale!!! I fully understand your frustration....it's the main reason I no longer work there...I just can't look a customer in the eye and basically LIE to them.....regardless of money!!
A $6 Monoprice cable will pass 0's and 1's in a bitstream just as well as a $120 M* cable will...and that "leftover" $114 will go a LONG way toward putting gas in my car....!!:D

I got the same sales pitch in regard to a 120 mHz display I was looking at. I even looked at the packaging of the Monster cable and it even said suitable for 120 mHz.
That makes no sense, doesn't it? Even if a HD TV has 120 technology, this does not effect the sending technology, right? The set is just using the same signal at a higher refresh to get an even multiplier on 24, 30, and 60 so the sending unit and cable are not in the equation.
I use some cheapo HDMI cables I got amazon I got off Amazon and they seem to be working fine. But it is hard to believe such a horrendous money grab can be completely without merit.
It is completely without merit. Believe it or not, some companies even sell $3000+ HDMI cables. Absolutely obscene.
Sorry, it's $2175, not $3000 :P.

I doubt I'll ever own equipment expensive enough to reveal weaknesses in my good ol' Monoprice cables.
Somewhere, there's probably a BB salesman who blames the occasional poor audio-video sync we sometimes see in HD on cheap HDMI cables. :D
