I have never owned a DVD player, but now I find myself in a position where I kind of need to buy one. Here's the thing though, I will primarily not be using it to watch DVDs but rather I want to use it to be able to play files from my PC, eg avi, wmv, mkv, ogg, etc

I want a player that will play ANY file I throw at it, on either CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R and any other format that I could possible burn from my PC. It doesn't have to be all fancy or hi-def or anything because its being outputted to an analog device and the files in question aren't exactly DVD quality to begin with. Suggestions? Any help appreciated...

Your best bet is using a HTPC.

Isnt an HTPC more geared towards someone who wants to watch TV on their PC? I kind of want to go the opposite direction - I want to watch files from my PC on my old analog 37in TV. :)

No, as the term is used here, HTCP is Home Theater PC; using a computer instead of a standalone player. See the HTPC forum here.
