View Full Version : Does Comcast offer an HDMI-output box? inkman11 11-19-07, 11:34 AM I'm not really sure which one I should get. I have one right now but I don't think it has HDMI. Is there one available? mikesonline 11-19-07, 12:49 PM Absolutely they do. I've had one for over a year now. Plus they have a newer version than the one I have. On my last service call I told them if they had to replace my cable box, then I wanted another hdmi cable box. They brought a newer one, but mine did not need to be replaced. mjones73 11-19-07, 12:55 PM Depends on what your local Comcast office has in stock. Best bet is to stop by the office and see what they have and exchange yours if needed. inkman11 11-19-07, 03:15 PM Thanks for the replies. I"ll check and see what they have. Also, (forgive all the questions) I want to buy an HDMI cable and I saw that someone on here recommended monoprice.com. There are tons of different HDMI cables on there. Which should I buy to connect the cable box to the TV? mjones73 11-19-07, 03:17 PM the 28AWG models towards the bottom of the page will work fine for most applications, if you need a particularly long cable, you may want to step up to one with a larger gauge wire. drbonbi 11-20-07, 07:00 AM the 28AWG models towards the bottom of the page will work fine for most applications, if you need a particularly long cable, you may want to step up to one with a larger gauge wire. All good advice. Just a note to clarify that larger gauge (aka thicker) wire means a lower number, i. e., 28 gauge is smaller than 24 gauge, etc. Dana pmjoe 11-20-07, 03:16 PM Thanks for the replies. Just tell them you got a new TV with an HDMI input and that you need a new box and the cable. lvov7342 11-21-07, 09:06 AM Thank You guys, that's good to know! I'm currently using the MOTO 6200 with a DVI-HDMI cable. I'll see if my local office has the HDMI version. Are there any "improvements" to the HDMI, anything better? Mikef150 11-21-07, 09:34 AM I just called Comcast this AM about switching out my Motorola DCT5100 (w/o HDMI) for an HDMI box and was told that the local payment offices do not carry these. The ONLY way to get one would be for a service tech to come out (and you would incur the service charge) I'm in Northern NJ. Anyone else hear the same? Does the tech really need to come out? With this kind of policy, as much as I despise Verizon, FIOS is looking better and better..... lvov7342 11-21-07, 10:14 AM Yeah, i wish i had FIOS in my area, i live in Northeast of Philadelphia (10 mins from Route 1), and i haven't even seen any FIOS-related activity. I'm almost contemplating on getting DishNetwork. Mikef150 11-21-07, 11:15 AM Guess the squeaky wheel gets the oil.... after a nasty gram to Comcast cust svc, I get an email back with a free tech appt next Wed to come out & swap the box..... basically, the explanation was that the local payment centers only rec'd a limited # of HDMI boxes and rather than have customers show up and not be able to get one, the technicians can get them direct at the warehouse and bring them to you. (and unless you scream, they'll charge for the visit) I'm surprised they're not selling swamp land in FLA.... lvov7342 11-21-07, 12:11 PM I'll try that :) I hope they'll also throw in an HDMI cable. skriefal 11-21-07, 01:18 PM The MkIII version of the 6412 DVR has an HDMI output, but it may work poorly unless the box has recent firmware. Unfortunately it's up to your local Comcast office to roll out firmware upgrades, and some are very slow in doing so. The Comcast office here is still using the 1+ year old 16.20 firmware which causes regular audio dropouts when using the HDMI output. lvov7342 12-03-07, 02:42 PM I was just in my local comcast office the other day, and they do have the regular HDMI boxes in stock (as long as you're in early, i wasn't). So it's a fight to get the new HDMI box. (just like last year with the 6200) They have plenty of HDMI DVRs though. :) mikemikeb 12-04-07, 06:19 AM Thank You guys, that's good to know! I'm currently using the MOTO 6200 with a DVI-HDMI cable. I'll see if my local office has the HDMI version. Are there any "improvements" to the HDMI, anything better?Better late than never on this... Both DVI and HDMI are digital video transfer formats, so one won't look better than the other. HDMI does have features not found on DVI, but none apply with cable TV (other than video & audio on one cable in HDMI, and even there, a lot of 5.1 receivers can't decode audio from HDMI, only analog, Toslink, or RCA coaxial cable). If you use your TV for audio, there might be some improvement in audio quality by switching to the digital audio standard of HDMI, BUT it would take some pretty good speakers, and a good pair of ears, to hear a difference. You might as well stick with your DVI box, especially if you have a 5.1 audio system. lvov7342 12-05-07, 10:45 AM Thanks for the reply! I'd say that i have good ears, that's why the current box is connected to my 5.1 pioneer set-up thru a coax RCA cable :) I want to trade-up for the HDMI version because of the bigger/bulkier "ANT IN" module that has cabinet clearance issues with the old box. (it sticks out too much). The DVI connector also has clearence issues; the HDMI seems ever so smaller. I actually have "internal mute" set on the TV, so that it doesn't even try to pass any sound. Would i have any issues hooking up my coax RCA audio cable to my HT receiver with the HDMI box? If not, i'll trade it if i can. mikemikeb 12-06-07, 01:20 AM I don't know if the HDMI box supports coaxial digital audio output, or its size, BUT don't be suprised if the HDMI box is bigger in person than you thought! xyth 12-07-07, 06:46 PM Would i have any issues hooking up my coax RCA audio cable to my HT receiver with the HDMI box? If not, i'll trade it if i can. I just swapped my old 5100 HD for a new 6200 HD box with HDMI. It does have a digital coax output. Very nice unit, resolved all my underscan issues that the 5100 had. |
