I have a mini and have been working to rip many of the movies I own to a drive. What is occurring is that the movies 'seem' to rip fine then when I try to play the TS folders in Front Row it fails. This is happening inconsistently as some work and others don't. Any thoughts? Is there another good piece of ripping software?

Which version of MTR are you using? Kind of important if we're to help you.

when I try to play the TS folders in Front Row it fails.

Are you adding aliases for these rips in your Movies folder?

This is happening inconsistently as some work and others don't.

I would check all your rips with Apple dvdplayer first--if it doesn't play with Apple dvdplayer, you don't have a good rip. You may be 1) using an older version of MTR--and hence it can't handle some of the newer copy protection schemes or 2) you may not know how to use MTR properly.

Which discs aren't you able to back up?

Is there another good piece of ripping software?

Some folks rip with Handbrake or DVD2OneX. Personally, I don't, I use MTR R14i and think it's the best thing going in OS X.

Be a little more specific and I'll try to help you.

It's mostly consistent, but sometimes it runs into some snags. I know of two movies of the top of my head that I had this issue with, Zathura & Volver.

Have you tried opening them with VLC? It's funny but it should play fine if the file size seems about right.

I am using MacTheRipper v 2.6.6 usually doing Main Feature Extraction.

De-Macrovision is clicked
New Region is set to ALL
RCE Region is OFF

Do you need my UOP settings as well?

So I couldn't rip a copy of Lion King as well as a few other Disney movies.

What is odd I had ripped copies of many of these movies before then used HandBrake to downconvert them to play on an iPod and all worked well.

These are all DVDs that have been played numerous times so I cannot attest to the overall quality of the disc itself but the fact that I am able to successfully rip some of these titles leads me to believe I am doing something else incorrectly.

OK, that partially explains your consistency problem.

2.6.6 still works on a lot of discs, but is very very old by now. To backup your entire collection you'll need a more current version of MTR, 2.6.6 can't handle the newer copy protection schemes and little tricks designed to fool ripping software that studios have trotted out on discs, especially like on Disney titles.

Head here:

http://ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3956

then once you register there's info in the main MTR forum about how you can donate and jump through a few new hoops to get the most recent beta version, which is 3.0 R14i

(As an aside, it's best to back up a dvd when you first buy it, when it's pristine.)

Wha? MTR is alive again? I thought he got sued into oblivion by the Macrovision turdballs.
