I like the Oppo 981's, but this is going on a 36' tube tv my kids use in the basement. I plan on replacing this when we move to our new house (the tv) and it is also hooked to my 1080i PJ via DVI. I am not ready to commit to a HD or Blu-Ray player. I really dont want to shell out for a dual format right now either. I do want something that can handle .avi format as we get lots of videos from the family back east of events we cant attend. I do want something that can output 1080p for the future. Something that can handle PAL format is also a plus. Any recomendations or help will be greatly appreciated!!:)

By ".avi" do you mean DivX?
If so then get the Oppo 980.
Avi is supported I under Divx I think. Why the 980 over the 981???
Anyone else care to tell me why to get the Oppo 980 vs the 981????

Actually, PAL playback is better on the 981.

AVI is a container that can use different codecs(eg uncompressed,MPEG-4,DivX),the 980 can play DivX while the 981 cannot.

The 981 plays divx. All the Oppos play the same set of data files.

Thanks for the clarification. Should I be concerned about HDMI (due to my PJ being DVI) on the Oppo going to my PJ or is that pretty solid on these units.

As long as you have HDCP on your DVI there is no problem. If you don't, then no HDMI source will work.
