View Full Version : DVD-5900 Q? about speaker setup

I recently decided to make some changes in my system and I need to reconfigure all my speaker settings. I'm using the 5.1-channel analog outs on the 5900 into an HK AVR8000 for SACD/DVD-A, and using the digital coax for DVD. The AVR8000 won't let me set up delay or channel adjustments for the analog multi-channel inputs, so I need to do that in the 5900. My question is, do these settings in the 5900 also apply to the digital output? The manual is confusing to me...

It says on p.34: "The SPEAKER CONFIGURATION settings only apply to analog outputs." -- So, there's no bass management for the digital outputs??

It says on p.35: "When digital connections are made with an AV amplifier, make the speaker settings on the AV amplifier." -- This seems to imply that NONE of the speaker settings apply to the digital outputs.

I have an Outlaw ICBM for bass management of the 5.1 analog outputs. But if possible, I'd like to set the delay/channel levels for all the ouputs in the 5900 and not bother with them in the AVR. Can I do it?

Speaker settings in 5900 are for DVDa and SACD only.

Use the Amp to configure speaker settings for DVD DD and DTS. Note the 5.1 phonos on amp should be a direct mode so adjusting speaker settings on amp won't effect the DVDa or SACD replay.

Can also test yourself to be sure. Set one speaker really load on amp and see if it effects SACD.

More inportantly set one speaker really load on 5900 and see if it effects coaxal out on DVDs for DD or DTS.

I think you will find my understanding is correct.

PS I have a 5900 with a Yam A1 amp - amazing sound :D

Thanks. I'll try your suggestion but I think you're right.

Got an issue with my picture and wondered how you get on with your 5900.

Do you suffer macro blocking and different colour banding on backgrounds like indoor plain walls. I believe colour errors are player trying to display shading.

I get this only on 30% of discs and various levels but can be distracting.

Would very much like to hear if you see any of this and what screen, type of connection and if by interlaced or Progressive.

Hope you don't mind me asking.

Cheers
Roman

I don't mind at all. I have seen macroblocking only once, on the Finding Nemo DVD when the fish get swallowed by the whale. Aside from that, I've noticed no other video issues that can't be attributed to the source DVD.

My 5900 is connected via DVI 720p to a Sony VPL-HS20 (native 768), projecting onto a 124" diagonal Da-Lite Cinema Contour screen.

Thanks for the reply filmnut.

This kind of falls in line with what I'm expecting as I think it's the fixed pixel displays that are more problematic and possibly just the plasmas at that.

Appreciate your input.

Oh and hope the sound was as I remembered.
