logicalnoise 12-10-07, 02:48 PM Uh oh, I can't find all the adapters...I only found one. Are they all the same (the adapters)? Where does it plug into the Fender?
-JR
yes each adapter is teh same. You should have 2 and it fits on the lower right side of the stratocaster.
lovingdvd 12-10-07, 03:16 PM Is there a cheat that will unlike all songs for casual quick play on drums and/or guitar? There are some songs I want to play without having to first make it deep through the career-like modes. Thanks.

I found this on IGN. Not sure if it works, but I'll probably give it a try.
Unlockable: All Songs
If you want to unlock every song in the game (which disables the ability to save), head to the game's title screen and insert the following code on any instrument: Red, Yellow, Blue, Red, Red, Blue, Blue, Red, Yellow, Blue.

Are there two models of the Strat? My headset plug is on the UPPER right side when wearing the guitar as a righty player.

JuiceRocket 12-10-07, 06:07 PM Thanks logicalnoise, thanks Rhett!
I finally found it...actually...my wife found it. Phew.
Thanks again,

WoOhOoO!!! I finally got past that next-to-impossible final measure in "Don't Fear The Reaper" on Drums/hard!!! I have never got as into the "big finish" as much as I just did when I completed that ending. :D
Now the Smashing Pumpkins are the only thing that stand in the way between me and the final tier. I hope I don't have to practice the intro to Cherub as much as I did the finale of Reaper.... it sounds tricky.
Believe me, for a non-drummer with a poor sense of rhythm, this is a great feeling.
LandShark22 12-11-07, 08:29 AM Is there a thread where the wannabe rockers are listing their Gamer Tags and trying to get together and jam? I couldn't find one...
Anyway if anyone wants to play I'm LandShark22x. :D

Gotta tell ya, for a drummer this song intro is tricky. The pedal is just too springy for me to hit the kick with accuracy -consistently anyway - on this song. I can play the song on a real kit fine. What I find is in the "easier" difficulties certain things are obviously left out. Well, being a drummer of course I still "hear" all those things and by reflex, try to play them.
The Smashing Pumpkins drummer is a fine drummer, but he is not THAT great.
Some of the patterns they put on the screen are difficult, just for difficulty sake I feel at times. I am actually stuck on HARD on Cherub. Again, because I keep playing "everything" and not what is on screen. SO.....
I went to expert and I am doing much better there. made it through 4th set in one session with no fails and many 4 and 5 star songs...and a few 3 stars :D
nyboy42 12-11-07, 12:05 PM The Coheed and Cambria song is really growing on me. At first when i heard the song, I didnt really care for it at all. And everyone online kept picking that song and would always say that it is a great song. Now after playing a few times im really beginning to see why everyone likes playing that song. Its a pretty great song.
As for the worst song....i really dont like Faith No More.
BillyVegas 12-11-07, 12:14 PM Quick Question--
Ive been playing for a while now, and played once online a while ago- and remember hearing some schmo on XBox Live singing in a multiplayer band environment.
Last night, I started playing with my friend who picked it up- we were playing across XBox live, and he had a singer there. Instead of hearing the singers actual voice, I just saw the words and heard the track itself.
Wheres his voice?!?! Is it an option somewhere, or did some update remove this feature?
As for the worst song....i really dont like Faith No More.
+1
...although I would rather play that then certain other songs. (I'm looking at you, GG&HT.)
scottro 12-11-07, 12:53 PM You guys are killing me...Epic is a favorite from my youth. Plus I think it's fun to play.

Epic is one of the best songs in the game!
nyboy42 12-11-07, 01:02 PM Same here. Wow, those look really nice. And I spent way more than $25 on the felt/foam mod. Heck the circle cutter at Michael's was $20 by itself. And having to deal with the clutter of that store was something I don't want to experience for a while...lol.
Got the suppressors yesterday. They are alright i guess. They do not totally supress the noise from hitting the pad but i would say it dampens it about 50% or so. Also it does affect the hitting as in light taps on the pads will not register when the supressors are on. But for the most part it the drum kit still responds well when the pads are on.
In my opinion i am dissapointed because i expected the noise to be much less with the supressors. I wouldnt reccomend anyone to spend $30 on these supressors.

Aw, I love Epic. I had a babysitter that looked like the lead singer of Faith No More. Good times. Welcome Home is quickly getting to be a favorite of mine as well--I really want to listen to more of their stuff and see how it stacks up.
I think my personal least favorite song right now has to be Wave of Mutilation by the Pixies. Listening to it just makes me cringe for some reason.

Faith No More rules....
chad473 12-11-07, 03:48 PM Electric Version makes me want to hang myself. hands down worst song for me.

Ouch... I love the Pixies/Frank Black. Although on drums I have a hard time with the alternating kick and hits of this and the OK Go song, so I usually skip these two. :o Maybe I should embrace and practice.
I'm not sure what you guys hear that's good in Epic besides a fun beat... ...but I'm there on Welcome Home... great song!
I don't care for C&C but Welcome Home is not a bad song as long as you don't have to sing it. My two least favorites are the Fall Out Boy song and the Flyleaf song.
I also tend to avoid Sabotage if it comes up in a BWT setlist.
jolietconvict 12-11-07, 09:09 PM As for the worst song....i really dont like Faith No More.
Blasphemy! Although I wish they had chosen "Falling to Pieces" instead of "Epic". Check that one out.
jasonstiller 12-12-07, 12:38 AM They need to start rolling out some GOOD DLC for this game. The only ones that have tickled my fancy is the Metallica pack.
If they'd ever get to finishing that "Who's Next" album, that would bring a whole lot of DLC joy to me.

only thing you can do is go on the official forums and suggest your wanted songs/artists in "the ultimate setlist" board.

I guess there's no accounting for taste. ;)
I think all of the DLC has been pretty great so far. I've only purchased the Police pack and Fortunate Son, but there are plenty more that I would buy if I needed more tunes right now (but the Metallica pack is last on my list).
I've only purchased the Police pack
Last night I tried out the Police songs on solo drum Hard and they are quite fun. Roxanne in particular is a really fun chart on drums because everyone knows the song so it's easy to anticipate the beats.
Blasphemy! Although I wish they had chosen "Falling to Pieces" instead of "Epic". Check that one out.
Somebody put me together...love that song.
Oddly enough, so far in BWT only one of our band members has managed a 100%, and it was our singer during Welcome Home. I finished the drum tour on medium last night (minus the bonus tracks), but it was definitely an off-night so I'll be redoing most of the songs on the last couple tiers. I'm assuming it's only going to get worse as things progress to hard, so I need to go back and practice...the outro on Sandman gives me problems with all the off-beat notes (my kick winds up falling out of time), and I need to work on Run to the Hills as well. Any pointers/comments on those or in general?
Overall though I'm loving this game--I'm looking forward to the challenge of stepping up to Hard instead of dreading it on some other games.
I'm looking forward to the challenge of stepping up to Hard instead of dreading it on some other games.
I found that, like the Guitar Hero games, once you start drumming in the Hard tiers, if you go back to medium the game isn't as fun anymore.
It sounds like you have the right attitude about this game hiko -- it's less about "beating" a song and more about "nailing" each song, so you should really enjoy the Hard mode. As I reached walls in the upper tiers (currently Smashing Pumpkins!), it's still fun to jump back to the lower tiers and turn 3 stars to 4... and try for 5.
I see the tier system in RockBand drums like this:
EASY: introduces the instrument
MEDIUM: mastering the beat
HARD: developing the beat with techniques like double bass, off-beat hits and rolls
EXPERT: similar to Hard, adding speed and accuracy
GrooveRite 12-12-07, 07:44 AM Unfortunately, I haven't had enough time to really play and get into the medium setting that I'm in. When I do pick it up, I'm finding it hard to play on medium since I'm not playing everyday or consistently enough. Do you guys feel that you have to more or less play everyday OR every other day (or the like) to play well and advance to the harder settings?
It sounds like you have the right attitude about this game...
I've been air-drumming most of these songs for as long as I can remember, so it's a lot of fun (with some frustration mixed in at times) finally putting sticks in my hand and banging around on something. :D
GrooveRite--before my weekly BWT session on Saturday night I hadn't played for 4 days and was on fire when we all got together--consistently hitting over 96% on every song on medium and some on hard (minus Run to the Hills, that was closer to 92-93). Skipped Sunday and Monday and played again last night and was just totally off (barely 4 starring the last couple tiers on Medium), so from my experience there's no magic number for days off between sessions. Others might have different stories though.

I find it has more to do with your energy level. Even half assleep I can 5 star most songs on expert on the guitar but on the drums It's best to start playing early and keep drinking fluids. YMMV

Please let me know what you think after a couple days of playing with them. I ordered them but haven't received them yet. Hope I didn't waste $30
Chris Rein 12-12-07, 10:04 AM there's achievements for getting 100% on a song. WIth bass you have to do up strums only to get the achievement.
You are correct. And I have that one! :)
I was one friggin' note off on the Expert 100% guitar one, and not even close on vocals or drums. :(
And here I thought the upstrum only on bass was going to trip me up...
benjamin-benjami 12-12-07, 10:09 AM i started doing a couple of songs on hard (drums) and i couldn't get my foot to move fast enought to hit the double bass.. any advice..

Hmm...could we see a Rock Band version of Gatorade or Dew in the not too distant future?

Make sure the kick pedal and foot is not under your knee... it should be slightly in front of your knee. You might need to move the set a little further away.
Also... practice by slowing down a section of a song with tricky double kicks and gradually speed it up.

Wow, you guys really put a lot of time and effort into this I see. I hope I have the patience to get better is all I'll say, lol! :o
One other thing about the bass pedal. Do you guys find yourselves using your whole leg after sometime especially on these double kicks or are you solely relying on just your calves?? My calves start to burn up really bad if I just use them so I'm not sure if its more practice that I need or different technique.

This was brought up in another thread (possibly in the PS3 section)?
The current consensus is to try to kick as much as you can by pivoting at the ankle, but some players (and pro drummers) use both the ankle and raise their knee to get that double beat from the foot. I tried this last night and it's pretty tricky... it's going to take a lot of practice.

You state correctly DaverJ....For drummers it's called playing "heel up".
It's where basically the ball of your foot is in constant contact with the kick pedal and the heel of the foot remains "up" and off the pedal. The "pretty tricky" part is finding the correct amount of pressure to leave on the kick pedal.
At NO time, be it heel up or down (foot flat) should your foot leave contact with the pedal. And I do not mean just for real playing, that goes for the game too as stated in the tutorials I believe).
The heel up method will test your balance, "feel" for the pedal and work out the calf/shin and possibly the whole darn leg.
During one of the loading screens I think they also recommend leaving your foot (flat) and totally compress the pedal. THEN lift up and down to get the notes. But again, it takes mental timing to adjust for the "trip" up and quickly back down to get that note.
I have a lot of trouble with the kick pedal. I find myself using my entire leg A LOT. My timing isn't very good just pivoting at the ankle for some reason.

That's how I play. Half pressure, heel off the ground and using pivot and leg action.
I also found that sitting with my crotch facing the red drum helped with doing crashes with the green and made my foot feel more natural on the pedal. As mentioned, I found that the kit slightly forward helps as does the right height as the manual states. Also helps with speed on the red and red/yellow runs.
If you have not done so already, make sure you manually calibrate everything. It really helps.
Also, one nice way to practice (if at work at a desk!) is to have that nervous habit in your leg. Try keeping your heel off the ground and the ball putting pressure on the floor. Sit there and bounce your leg up and down in the nervous motion. :)

Great tip Rhyvven, thanks!
As you were typing your response I was editing mine to replace "heal" with "pivot the ankle", but based on your reply I'm not sure if I'm as accurate now.
Can you re-read my comment above and let me know if I'm off-track please?

Dead on with this...played Sandman over lunch and blew away my previous high (set last night) by over 30,000...which should tell you just how bad I was doing last night. :o

I played Sandman last night on hard and almost lost it at the end because I was tired. It's one of those songs that, like Reaper, has a tricky ending ... and keeps going beyond the original song.
"Hey, the song should have faded out by now!" :o
lovingdvd 12-12-07, 03:54 PM OK, so how many of you...
- have poked yourself in the eye with a drumstick while playing?
- have had a drumstick fly out of your hand during a "fill" section?
- have had a drumstick fly out of your hand twice during the same song?
- have decided to play "just one more song", but keep going until you finish set list after set list?
- have seen your otherwise "normal" friend turn into a devil-like creature while trying their hand at vocals?
- still have all the Rock Band boxes from the packaging piled in the corner of your room, too busy playing to actually clean up that mess?
All signs of a great game!

LOL !! My hat is actually cable operated by remote pedal, easier placement with the double base. Love the rack by the way, tear down and set up is a breeze. :)
My brother played drums. I often helped setup for gigs for a number of years. That rack setup looks a ton easier to put up and tear down. He'll be back in town during xmas. I'm interested to see what he thinks of Rock Band. He was damn good and majored in jazz/music theory.

When I was in a band our drummer had a rack. It was ridiculously easy to set up and take down.
Lord Flatus 12-13-07, 11:29 AM I got a 2nd replacement guitar, but it's still iffy. The overdrive seems to fire itself off sometimes, but the strum bar is quieter than the first replacement. I sure hope they make the wireless one a "deluxe" version, as I would pay more for a wireless Strat that worked well and kept working. Heck, I'd pay extra for wired one that kept working well as I like the guitar.
I'm back to using the guitar pick, which I find really helps me keep time alt-strumming the long sections.
LandShark22 12-13-07, 12:23 PM Wow the wireless strat is going to be $79? Yikes I guess I can live with the wire :(

GrooveRite 12-13-07, 01:37 PM Let me tell you guys something.....
I was just at Bestbuy on my lunch break checking out stuff in their gaming section and what do I see as soon as I get there?? A brand new Rockband Kiosk with Klipsch Synergy surround sound set up. I see this guy trying out the guitar with about 5 to 7 people looking on watching him play. As soon as hes done, I ask him if I can get on the drums while he plays guitar. He said sure and I hear people saying...."Whoa, both of them are going to play?!?!" lol. So, I pick Foo Fighters Fly and I start jammin on the drums. By the time I'm done, there are about 18 to 20 people crowded behind us watching and all I hear are people asking the BB drones where they can purchase this game. The best thing HRMONIX has done (especially over this holiday) is having these Kiosk set up (and putting up new ones when need be) because they practically sell themselves.
Mcklein 12-13-07, 06:29 PM Wow the wireless strat is going to be $79? Yikes I guess I can live with the wire :(

The only thing I don't like is the rats nest of cables when trying to put away the four-person band setup without completely breaking down all the connections. It's fugly.

True! Now if they could only add that zap you sometimes get when you've got your guitar ready, lean to the mic to sing, and realize you're not entirely grounded! Fun stuff!

As mentioned before, it's pretty much the same price to buy the bundle and get $30 or whatever back from Gamestop. Although, it might not be a $30 value anymore to GS.

Fortunately I happen to prefer my wireless guitar from GH 3 over the strat from RB, so for times when I'm just playing solo on guitar there's no wires to deal with.

GH3's next pack is 3 songs from WB(linkin park, the used and some other band) and then a christmas song.,...yeah
I finally started solo drum tour on Hard...I guess they call it that for a reason. The first tier was pretty much no problem getting 5 stars, but there have been a couple parts on the 2nd tier where I just find myself going, "Huh?" I've still managed to avoid failing anything yet but it makes me nervous about what's coming up. Thinking I'll be spending some time getting down those parts in the early set before moving on too far in the event that later songs build on them...
Police pack is incredible.
+1... Roxanne, while not a favorite Police song, has now become one of the my favorite drum/hard tracks.
I finally beat Smashing Pumpkins' Cherub Rock on Solo/Hard/Drums (it wasn't pretty!) and unlocked the final tier. I tried all the songs on hard and there's going to be some serious practicing needed for these guys! :o
I might forge ahead on Expert solo, but I really don't feel good enough yet. Maybe I should practice all the lower-tiered Hard songs to get solid before even seriously attempting the final tier. There's still some songs that trip me up... even on the low tiers.
Any non-drummers beat Hard mode yet?
btw, don't bother with downloading Juke Box Hero if you are a drummer. The cover is kinda meh, and the drum chart is boring.
Mcklein 12-15-07, 05:59 PM Police pack is incredible. Well done master recordings. Wow. I'm a big fan of GH II as well and wish they could deliver some quality DLC like this.
I love the police pack also..very cool.
cueCrew 12-15-07, 07:36 PM So I had some initial concerns with my strum bar activiating notes intermittently, but figured it was something that just needed to be "broken-in." Playing what you hear vs what you see, somehow accomodating for the lag I made it work for a while. Two weeks ago the whammy bar gave out - it just flops about without any friction/spring to hold it in place - so I decided that I would send it back and see if perhaps the strum bars were improved.
Signed up for return, gave my card number and asked for express delivery and a few days later the replacement guitar was here. Piece of cake, really.
So here's the deal with the "new" one (I'm not sure if these are refurbished or not): The strum bar has about a quarter-inch "Dead Zone" where it does not register any movement at all. The spring/click that we have become familiar with from the GH controllers is gone, but I'm wondering if this is too much play.
Any one have a guitar/replacement that sounds like this? The bar just seems too loose and you end up slamming it back and forth to get alternating strumming which gets near impossible on faster tracks.
I have been able to play just fine with other controllers so I think I'll be making return #2.
lovingdvd 12-15-07, 07:43 PM btw, don't bother with downloading Juke Box Hero if you are a drummer. The cover is kinda meh, and the drum chart is boring.
I downloaded JBH last night. I thought the drum track was so-so but the guitar chart is a lot of fun to play. It helps I'm sure that I'm a big fan of that song. Fun solo.

Well, this song is just about that one guitar, and the vocals pretty much require you to scream "stars in his eyes" over and over again. :D
pdawg17 12-15-07, 11:25 PM Is anyone else a perfectionist like me and needs to get 5 stars on each song before moving on? It takes a lot longer and gets frustrating at times but I just can't get myself to move on knowing a song has 4 stars next to it...

Sounds reasonable on Easy... but even Medium is tricky to get all 5 stars -- even in certain songs of the lower tiers (OK Go).
Go for it if that system works for you... but don't give up if you can't get that 5th star. As others have pointed out, when (if?) you hit a song that you just can't get through, it's nice to have those non-5 starred songs to go back to to get away from the wall.
jasonstiller 12-16-07, 01:52 AM I have a lot of trouble with the kick pedal. I find myself using my entire leg A LOT. My timing isn't very good just pivoting at the ankle for some reason.
make sure your leg is at least in a 90 degree angle when using a kick pedal. Any thing lower is wasted effort and faster fatigue. Its kinda like riding a bicycle and pedaling with the seat really low or really high. Maximize the motions!
the red worm 12-16-07, 04:51 AM Unlocked the van and tour bus tonight in BWT. I'm proud of this because I'm playing this solo, doing guitar and vocals.

I'm starting to realize that I need to give up on getting 5 stars on everything :)...I got through medium that way but the David Bowie song on hard (can't remember the name of it) is giving me fits...I can't do better than four stars after trying about 10 times :)...time to move on me thinks :)
alougher 12-16-07, 07:41 PM I know this has been beaten to death (pun intended), but I'm about to mod my drums and couldn't remember if the felt pad/Michaels mod was better than the mouse pad mod? Can someone jog my memory? -- thx.
I know this has been beaten to death (pun intended), but I'm about to mod my drums and couldn't remember if the felt pad/Michaels mod was better than the mouse pad mod? Can someone jog my memory? -- thx.
I don't know if it's ever been settled.
I think if you don't have to buy a circle cutter, the Michaels foam/felt is a good and inexpensive way to go -- each pad should be under $2. I would suggest going with all black on both foam and felt and cutting with a bowl smaller than diameter of pads to allow for the original colored rings to be visible. See Wilson10's post in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12372415#post12372415) of a nicely done and inexpensive solution.
Wilson10... how's your mod holding up?

WizarDru 12-17-07, 08:49 AM So I figured I'd see if my learning some new techniques in Rock Band (such as alternate strumming, better finger placement for hammer-ons/pull-offs) would translate as better performance in Guitar Hero II, so I hooked up the Xplorer and gave it a run yesterday.
Hmmm.
Well, I found myself thinking the following: First, the Xplorer guitar, which I once loved? Now I find it clumsy, too small and I don't like the buttons. Second? I still couldn't beat 'Mother' on Hard. At all. Still didn't 5-star Psychobilly Freakout on Medium, either. Feh.
I mean, the hammer-on/pull-off sequence in Mother is BRUTAL. Is there some secret to it that I'm missing?
My impression is that Rock Band spends a lot more time easing you into difficult concepts and the songs are more gradual in their difficulty flow. RB's songs don't feel like they're trying to PUNISH me, so much.
cresing 12-17-07, 08:53 AM Is anyone still having problems with the lag? I can not get it right on my tv. It is driving me crazy not being able to hit a long row of notes. Thanks for the reply. Do you have digital audio connected also? I heard that certain audio setting like dolby digital can create more lag. Do those settings work well for you...meaning you are not getting frustrated by missing notes in a long string of notes? Thanks

I RMA'd my guitar and the new one is way better. It has elimated the missing of notes in long strings. My strummer was shot. The new one is great. It may not be a lag issue.

I'm not running digital, just 5.1. Those settings work perfectly. Although I must admit when I drink and play, I bump the video calibration up to 20ms ;)

Go to the rockband site. There is a hardware return link somewhere. I registered with ea.com and filled out the form.
They take your credit card info and will bill you ONLY if you do not return the old damaged guitar within 30 days.
They will send you out a new guitar right away with 2 day shipping. You pack your old guitar in the box they send you, flip the UPS form around and away it goes.

eff that, juke box hero is fun, and I'm the designated drummer :).
I've even had the guys offer to have their GFs watch my kid so I can come drum for them, LOL.
wilson10 12-17-07, 05:38 PM My yellow pad crapped out today. I had ordered a box to send the drums back when I requested the one for my strat with a broken strummer. They have been OK but never very responsive with rolls but I could live with it as I didnt have to do too many and I wanted to give them some time to work any bugs out. Hopefully they have things right and I will get a good drum set. Just sucks, I probably won't them back until after Xmas :( The family wanted me to bring it Saturday to the family get together.

Did you offer up your CC# for an immediate replacement? If not then thats how it works, they send you an empty box, you put the broken one in and once they get it they send you the replacement.
For what it's worth I had a very long talk with one of the hardware guys there on Thursday as I am STILL waiting for my replacement guitar from an RMA on the 21st of Nov. They are currently on the 4th revision of the Guitar but there has been no revisions to the drums.
An the folks that got the free game email, you'll be waiting awhile. As of last Thursday they were still trying to decide how many games you get to pick from. 3 or 5 was the current debate, once that's settled then they still have to figure out the actual games you get to choose from. There is roughly 5000 folks that received the offer if anyone is curious.
soleblaze 12-18-07, 12:45 AM Got an email with the games..quite a few to choose from. I ended up getting skate. for the 360. i'm sure it'll be on the gaming news sites, if it isn't arleady..with a list of games that are available
Yeah got the mail too, I have skate. which I highly recommend to anyone who doesn't have it so I'm trying to decide between NFS Pro Street and FIFA.
eta looks like those got lousy reviews so now I'm thinking NHL 08 even though I've been a 2k hockey fan for the last 8 years.
JuiceRocket 12-18-07, 02:17 AM I was having issues with my guitar registering two "hits" randomly when I'd strum. Although not a huge pain, there were times when it's flare up and make the game unplayable for short periods of time.
This evening I pulled the guitar out of the closet and noticed that the strum bar was at an angle. I unscrewed the guitar and found that the short spring attached to the strum bar was bent in two areas. I removed the spring, and the guitar seems to be working fine.
Not suggesting anyone tries this as a fix if they have the same issue I was having, but thought I'd post it as an FYI.

RKRocha 12-18-07, 08:22 AM I picked up RB last night at my local Gamecrazy store. They had 6 in stock which is a surprise because the BB, CC, Target, etcs had zero. Anyhow this gift is for he family and my 9 and 7yr old are going to very happy. Im a bit nervous about the issues you guys are reporting about the equipment, but it sounds like there is a process in place to help folks out. I have an xplorer guitar already so we are primed to have fun with a full band! I'll report back later on the fun we're having!

On Easy, you could probably just hum as long as you get the breaks right and vary your pitch in the right direction. Take advantage of the floating arrow/pitch indicator before phrases or words start to get an idea of where you are. Also, you can sing an octave lower (or higher? that's what the spandex is for) and still get full points.
The vocal tour took me a while because I waited until the house was empty!
alougher 12-18-07, 10:17 AM I picked up a box from BB yesterday and it had November date on the bottom, although I haven't had a chance to test it out I'm hoping it's from a newer and improved batch.
lintball 12-18-07, 11:44 AM I bought RB for xbox on release day from Kmart. I have not opened it yet, but have been following the equipment issues.
Can someone summarize what to look for (production date, etc) without opening the box to tell if I have "newer" hardware? I may to a buy/return if I can find a newer version in a local store. Thanks.

lovingdvd 12-18-07, 02:50 PM I am not a big fan of the RB guitar at all. I MUCH prefer the wireless Les Paul from GH III that I use always when playing RB. To me it just is much more responsive and easier to press the buttons.

Will they send the replacement to Canada even though it's not out here yet? I bought my bundle in the states...
vwbeetlvr 12-19-07, 01:27 AM It asked me right now to download a patch. Does it brick (turn off) the ability to use the guitar hero controller???!?!? I'm not going to be the first to download it. It asked me twice so i'm sure its for rock band.
edit::
so far i dont see any differences. i have played at least 5 different games since the last time i played rock band and i know if you played tony hawk project 8 after playing five different games it cleared some of the data that was saved on your drive. i wonder if that might have something to do with it??
I believe the update is for the new community features - the Rock Band message board is down and promises the new community will be unveiled when it comes back up.

yep, it should hopefully be a lot better than the crap GH site but yeah I actually visit those boards a lot so I'm in a bit of with drawl.
Also just want to say the three new trackas are pretty fun.
thejokell 12-19-07, 06:52 AM Finished solo guitar on hard!!!!! I'm so freaking excited. I was stuck on Molly Hatchet for a couple of weeks, and last night tried using the solo frets instead of the normal ones - that got me through the solo quite easily (75%, instead of the usual 45-50%). Only three starred it, but still passed!
Next I think will be vocal expert, and then drums hard. Love this game. :D
DaverJ's view on a couple of the new DLC on drums:
Buddy Holly: Quite possibly the easiest song in the game. Straight-forward beat with occasional crash, mostly single kick drums. I got through it with 5-stars on Hard at 96% first time through. A great warm-up song. **** (out of 5)
My Iron Lung: Mostly easy beat with unexpected tempo changes. Not my fav Radiohead song, but certainly not the worst and works well in a band setting. *** (out of 5)
Also recommended downloads: I Fought The Law (****), Roxanne (*****), and I HATE to admit it but My Sharona (****) is annoyingly fun to play. :D

The Metallica songs are brutal on drums/Hard... I haven't finished any of the 3. Those are still way beyond my limited skills. :o Sandman is very fun, yet that ending gets me every time -- damn Lars an his off-beat hits and crashes.

benjamin-benjami 12-19-07, 01:02 PM any advice for GG&HT on medium drums...
any advice for GG&HT on medium drums...
That's the wall for most of us non-drummers.
The obvious one is to practice the ending... it's not hard, just constant. You might want to save Overdrive till you are failing to bring yourself back in. If you are loosing the beat, try focusing on kick and snare to keep you in the song, then work high-hat back in. Lastly, go back and try to get better on any song you've done that are 3 stars or low scores.
Good luck! Once you get past this one, the drums gets a lot of fun again.
wilson10 12-19-07, 01:25 PM Not sure how or WHY, but I beat GG&HT the first time through it on medium. I was petrified of it from reading about it on here and a blasted right through it.
On a side note, I miss my drums I want a new set back NOW!!! Its killing me not to try the new songs!! AGHHHHH

Me too, even 4 starred it my first time thru on hard. Not a complicated beat, just loooong and tiring. The main thing to watch out for is the time changes...that constant beat slows down and speeds up on you, but as long as you realize it quick enough and get back in time you'll make it! :D

any advice for GG&HT on medium drums...
Overall it's not a hard song but it acts as sort fo a gate keeper song. Know the timing first that's the hardest part. Then just work on the beat. If your having trouble seperating your feet from your hands try tapping your other foot on the non BD hit. That way you don't have to concentrate on not tapping your foot for the Red + Yellow hits. Having a overdrive handy will help give your a break. and if you can do the beat decently you can just ignore the fills until the end of tehsection and just get contunual breaks.

Thanks for the DLC review. Any other opinions on what is generally considered the better of the available DLC (not specific to any instrument, just in general)?
hmmm... very subjective. Overall, if you dig the song it will probably be fun to play.
I will say that the cover versions so far are reasonable covers, but HeadRusch pointed out in one of the Sabbath downloads the cover/chart on guitar is a little different from the original studio version.
I've bought most of them except the Bowie covers (I might nab Heroes at some point), and there hasn't been any DLC that I thought was were significantly better than the non-DLC songs that come with the game.
...except Roxanne - the best DLC $2 I've spent. :D
gilcrest 12-19-07, 04:59 PM Hola AVS brethren,
So, who out there has been playing real acoustic drums for a while (I've got 14 years under my belt) and has played this game? I have yet to try it, but have really high hopes... I tapped on one for a sec in BB, and wasn't overly stoked about the feel - is it a problem? or do you get over it after a few sittings? How are the drums in comparison to the real thing in terms of coordination, etc.?
Thanks!
Gilcrest
I'm chalking this up to a bad night and having not played in a few days...to take a break from packing I sat down and picked up where I left off, which put me at Suffragete City on Hard. I'm still stuck on that tier an hour and a half later, so I gave up. I know what the problem is--I have a tendency to just start hitting the yellow (on the Bowie song) or blue (on Maps) pad as quickly as possible which means for every note I hit, I miss at least one, and it makes it impossible to find a rhythm with the kick. So rather than get completely cheesed off and put my sticks through the wall, I'm taking a 24 hour break and recharging.
My whammy bar died midway through my Weezer set and probably cost me 10/10. Grr. Never had one go out on me, have the wife bringing home extra rubber bands but thus far am not happy with this kind of fix. Not sure whether to open it up and replace the spring or order another guitar. I'm happy with this one so I'd hate to get a bad one.
I was hoping they'd have their community site up by now. Those jokers even sent me an email mid day saying it was up now. What a tease.

eta looks like those got lousy reviews so now I'm thinking NHL 08 even though I've been a 2k hockey fan for the last 8 years. Not sure where you are looking but FIFA08 got very respectible ratings check metacritic for an overview. NFS not so much...

You're right... I did see more favorable reviews for FIFA the more I dug. But I still wound up going with NHL, which received just about universal praise. If it is really as good as the reviews say then I think I'd prefer it to FIFA either way and its been 2 seasons since I played a hockey game - before that I bought 2k just about every year and an EA game once or twice between systems.
jasonstiller 12-19-07, 10:33 PM Hola AVS brethren,
So, who out there has been playing real acoustic drums for a while (I've got 14 years under my belt) and has played this game? I have yet to try it, but have really high hopes... I tapped on one for a sec in BB, and wasn't overly stoked about the feel - is it a problem? or do you get over it after a few sittings? How are the drums in comparison to the real thing in terms of coordination, etc.?
Thanks!
Gilcrest
Ive been banging skins (HA HA) for 15 years. Rock Band is THE game for any drummer or wannabe drummer. We actually get to utilize our skills in a video game!! Dont judge the best buy demo kit, it sux! Trust me, you will love this. As far as real life to game comparison, its very close. While only having 4 pads and a kick pedal, the game uses those pads very well and you dont even notice it after a couple of minutes.
Finally the DLC's are available in Canada :D
RGoldberg 12-20-07, 07:50 PM Amazon.com currently has the bundle in stock for any last minute shoppers who have been having trouble finding it.
alougher 12-20-07, 09:57 PM Was out and about today and bundles were everywhere. Walmart were selling them at $150!
tjeepdrv 12-21-07, 12:24 AM It's getting old having people quit early on ranked games, I've had 2 in a row do it to me so far tonight.
the red worm 12-21-07, 02:15 AM in all my ranked games I only had one person drop
I got 20 wins on both type games and won 90% of the time so I guess I just got lucky
nyboy42 12-21-07, 03:21 AM to those who play this on xbox 360. If you ever need a good drummer look my gamertag up: Rhythm and Funk. I am one of the top drummers out there. I get at least 95% on expert on every song and love to jam online with other people.

the request a song feature is back on official site. Also the site is motly running smoothly now. i was able to login and link my account with my gamertage pretty easily. I'll post my band page when I get a chance.
tjeepdrv 12-21-07, 11:09 AM I ended up having about 7 or 8 people quit in the middle of a song last night. That's the first time I've ever given people bad feedback, ha.
logicalnoise 12-21-07, 02:56 PM HMX said there's indeed DLC coming next weekend and what is is will be annouced eitehr late today or monday and will hit XBL as scheduled. PSN gets it the week after along with the DLC for that week.
Just to save this magnificant thread from the second page, I'd just like to say that anyone looking for a solid bandmate for some online fun, I'll be available most of tonight, from around 6:30-7:00 CST on.
I can play anything you throw at me on Expert guitar or bass, and can handle drums on medium (I've played the real thing for about 10 years, but I have arthritis in my right leg pretty bad, so expert drums tend to cause me intense pain after 1 or 2 songs).
I've got a bit of cold and my throats a little hoarse, so vocals wouldn't be a good idea for me.
Anyone interested send me an invite or friend request, my GT is BlackDragon1066.

Do you have any mods on your drum pads? I consider my most recent set pretty accurate but it's still hard to hit 95% on every song (it might be me though :))
blah141 12-23-07, 07:09 PM My drum kit was dead out of the box and my guitar strum physically sticks...EA is sending me replacements for both by 2-day air but I'm sure they won't get it out today which would make it take until Wednesday to get them
alougher 12-23-07, 07:34 PM I tried the mousepad mod and wasn't impressed. Pretty much lost sensitivity in the blue/green pads for some reason. This is on a new set dated Nov 7th. I'm going to try the Michael's mod and see how that goes. Very impressed with the Strat though, hitting more accurate notes than the Les.
cesslinger 12-23-07, 08:26 PM I received my replacement guitar on Friday. That day was also my birthday. That day there was also a huge party with giant drunk people slamming on my rockband stuff. These suckers can take a beating, the new strat works great, the drums are still alive and kicking.
So, like many other people, I got stuck on The Outlaws Green Grass song. Tried a few times and kept failing around 70% on that rythm that gets seemingly everybody.
Anyway, it was getting me down on the game. Finally, after 2 or 3 weeks off, I fired it back up since I knew friends were coming over. 2nd or 3rd attemp (prob. 25 overall attempts), I made it through GG. Never missed another song and finished out the medium tour.
I tell you...after awhile of trying and practicing, the foot pedal starts becoming easier. You start to "get it" and it becomes more of second nature. I'm about 2 or 3 tiers into Hard now with no problems so far. I feel I'm getting better. In World Tour mode with friends, I'm having no problems at medium.
I wish the Band Tour wasn't so limited by difficulty. My buddies can't really play Hard and we are limitec to 260,000 fans. Minor complaint. Love the game.
WizarDru 12-24-07, 09:30 AM So on Saturday, the gang came over and we hit the ground running. After a marathon 6 hour session, we managed to secure our greatness in the Hall of Fame. GLEE. We then went back in and started on some hard stuff. This was our first session with the new throne for the drums, and it worked well. While I do wish that Hard weren't required to get access to some gigs, I AM glad that Medium is all that's required to get to the Hall of Fame.
I was thrilled when I didn't bail on Enter Sandman while on the drums, but we've got a long way to go. I was happy to tackle some real simple stuff on Hard for the drums, but I need to go through the solo drum campaign.
The next day (and a bit into today), I'm still feeling the pain in my fingers. Clearly, we need to do warm-ups before long periods of ROCK.
logicalnoise 12-24-07, 12:28 PM HMX announced the new DLC for tomarrow:
these five tracks are being released tomarrow as singles and only for 80 MSPs each(a buck).
"Attack" - 30 Seconds To Mars (from 2005's A Beautiful Lie)
"The Kill" - 30 Seconds To Mars (from 2005's A Beautiful Lie)
"Dirty Little Secret" - All-American Rejects (from 2005's Move Along)
"Move Along" - All-American Rejects (from 2005's Move Along)
"Song With A Mission" - The Sounds (from 2006's Dying To Say This To
You)
I'm picking these up just for the value but I have no doubt these will be fun.
thejokell 12-24-07, 01:45 PM Great price, horrible selection.

Possibly a good sign that smaller stuff is going to be less expensive...
Jeffroy 12-24-07, 05:19 PM I actually love 30STM, so I'm all over those. May grab some of the AAR's tracks too.
If they are going to do Emo, I wish they would bring over the MCR tracks from the Guitar Hero DLC. But that song "The Kill" sounds like it might have a fun drum part.
I hope new DLC songs will be a weekly, or at least semi-weekly thing.

lovingdvd 12-25-07, 09:15 AM OK I absolutely love this game and enjoying it a lot. However I must say that I am frequently annoyed to no end and confused by the "you are not signed in" and "cant use your settings". Seems I have to turn the controllers on in a special order or something.
Also very annoying is the "cant continue since band leader is not in the game". Give me a break. I want to have a band career but switch out whoever I want to play.
Anyway the game is great but I find this very annoying trying to get set up and going sometimes...
Any hints how to make this go smoother and avoid this?

what ever controller hits start or the green button/pad first is the instrument that the main gamertag gets assigned to. that's all I have for you.
darklordjames 12-26-07, 03:58 AM I grabbed the five new songs. While none of them are amazing tracks to play like the Metallica and Police packs, they are at least worth the $1 each asking price. I have already gotten my $5 of fun out of them, yet I will see them again and again in Band World Tour. :)
Recommended.
RKRocha 12-26-07, 09:03 AM I posted earlier so I thought I would follow up...
Santa brought my daughters (and Dad ;)) the game and we set it up yesterday. All of our instruments seem to be working just fine. My oldest daughter (almost 9yrs) got on the drums and her sister (7yrs) was on the mic. I couldnt convince them to let me play guitar in their band though. :)
They are having alot of fun and we are going to have some relatives over later this week for full band fun.
I played some solo guitar tour last night with the Rockband strat. To me it seems much more responsive then the xplorer I have, but I tend to get my fingers lost on the neck when moving up and down sometimes.
I prefer the difficulty of Medium on GH3 compared to Rockband's. In stepping up to Hard on RB, I have trouble. I just need to practice I guess!:D
I tried out the drums and they are darn fun to play! I am definitely going to do a solo drum tour before it is all said and done!
I tried the mousepad mod and wasn't impressed. Pretty much lost sensitivity in the blue/green pads for some reason. This is on a new set dated Nov 7th. I'm going to try the Michael's mod and see how that goes. Very impressed with the Strat though, hitting more accurate notes than the Les.
I received my mods in from beatdownpads.com
I am pleased with how they cut down on the sound and I don't notice any loss in sensitivity. That being said, you definitely have to make good contact and can't just tap it lightly to register, like you could do without the pads. I know I don't have a problem when it comes to whaling on these things so they are perfect for me. I would recommend them although I definitely feel the price tag is too high for these. Just a couple pieces of foam stuck together with what looks to be some airbrushing. I got some good streaks going (100-200 notes) so I know I am not missing notes due to the mod. I am missing notes because of the defective red pad that everyone seems to have an issue with.
I knew the good times wouldn't last... :(

I completely agree with the band leader requirement annoyance. It does say in the manual that the band leader must always participate, but for anyone who just wants to pick up the game and start a band, its not stated in the actual game while starting a new band (at least that I recall). In my haste, I started a band with my fiance and 2 kids but since its easiest to input with the controller, I used that one to start the band. Because of this, the singer became the band leader. This is unfortunate, because at times not all of us want to play but want to continue our career nonetheless; so we are forced to always have someone singing, which is our least favorite instrument If you haven't gotten too far in your Band World Tour, I'd recommend starting a new band but make sure the band leader is going to be the instrument that will always be used.
As far as signing in issues, I've found it easiest if all instruments sign in with specific gamertags before starting band world tour (so we have 4 separate gamertags). Even at that, though, I swear its a confusing process especially for casual gamers that aren't too familiar with the whole gamertag thing.
wilson10 12-26-07, 07:55 PM Dang that sux DaverJ!! I added a two little rubber stoppers to my pedal to see if it will alleviate some of the flex. I canl take a pic if anyone wants to see.
I just got my drums back today and they are GREATLY improved. I would be willing to say they are 50% better than my old set. They respond great, fast rolls soft or hard respond, they sound different too, almost better built or soemthing. Also the whole assembly is A LOT sturdier. I noticed this while putting the pipes (legs) together. They also appear to be different as they are more of natural gray color as opposed to my old ones that were somewhat shiny.
So far I am VERY happy with them. Not playing that much better with them but I know they are right now and if I get good enough for the really fast rolls I am confident that my drums can pull them off if I can.
logicalnoise 12-26-07, 08:12 PM yeah just got my replacement drum set and it's indeed better than my old set even when it was new. Unfortunately I'm still failing reptila on expert. I just don't get it nothing about that song is overly difficult but the chorus drum part somehow messes me up. maybe it's just an odd timing to it. but yeah it also has a lot mor rebond on my drum hits. My nylon tipped sticks bounce as they should now. BTW my trouble was my yellow pad cracked. I RMA'd a week or so ago and played a lot of drums over the weekend. the slight crack grew to the entire width of the pad.

mrmike77 12-27-07, 05:35 AM Hi all,
I'm looking to buy the game soon, I've saved the money and going to start looking around town to get the game friday or saturday.
Any tips on what to look for in order to get a "new" version and where to look for version/build date?
thanks!

DaverJ, I'm assuming you're getting an RMA from EA, but if not I came across the following "fix" on Joystiq.

TheDigger 12-27-07, 08:58 AM How is RB as far as a single player game/ I think my wife will play a little bit but probably not too much. Same with my friends. I'm guessing it will be a group event every once in a while, but mostly probably mostly just myself. Thanks.

EA will RMA bass pedals(they deal with them separate from the drum pads). If my kick pedal ever fails I'm buying one of the electronic drum pedals that are compatible.

There's a round sticker usually found on the bottom of the box that has the build date on it

Yea, I ordered one of those on eBay... the guy shipped it out within an hour after purchase, and also sent me an email reply saying that I should have no trouble putting the "metal to the pedal". :D
I know I can go the whole RMA route, but since I modded my pads I figured I would just mod the entire kit. I wish I ordered one of the nicer (and more expensive) re-enforcers for the pedal before it broke... but the nicer one doesn't fix a broken pedal, it just makes sure it doesn't break.
A friend made this for me, which I thought was very clever:

Daver for not a whole to more there's plenty of real kick pedal triggers that work with RB without mods.
Saw those pedals a day or two ago online. Let us know how they work out. A couple times this weekend I had to say something to the person on drums. "Hey there Herculus, take it a bit easy on the pedal you're trying to drive into the ground there."

I should have looked a little harder. :o
Anyone have a link handy for a real pedal (new) that's RockBand compatible?

logicalnoise 12-27-07, 01:46 PM well online it's sort of hard. But stuff like sustain/hold pedals made for keyboards work. Ebay is a likely place to find such pedals or a non chain music store. I'm going to look online and see if I can find some.
jasonstiller 12-27-07, 01:47 PM yes link please!
logicalnoise 12-27-07, 01:51 PM haha well new these things are pretty expensive but here's one that should work: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Roland-FD-8-Hi-Hat-Control-Pedal-449919-i1141805.gc
yeah I know but that's a standalone trigger. Ebay should have some of these available hopefully used and for quite a bit cheaper. You'll notice the port is a 1/4 patch so you'd need an adapter to 1/8th mono. Of course this is a highend pedal(real nice IMO) used music shops would also be a good place. You can see if a store will let you buy just a pedal trigger like this off a full electronic pad set.
Ishmael198 12-27-07, 02:17 PM While we're talking about RMA's, a note for Canadians.
My guitar strum bar quit working after about 4 hours of light use.
I put in an RMA with EA, and offered up my credit card for the 2-3 day air thingo that the support website talks about.
Then I find out that as a Canadian I apparently have to wait 2 weeks, this despite offering up my credit card for 'express' service.
Express indeed. I can get just about anything I want from the US overnight air, but apparently plastic guitars are embargoed or require additional clearance time?
Sorry for the sarcasm, but I am a tad frustrated. Wait forever for the game, wait forever for our plastic guitars.
What's next EA, huh? Take all the Canadians out of NHL 08?
For anyone interested, the build date on the bottom of my box was October 25th. And this was NOT purchased in Canada, was purchased on a quick cross border shopping trip on December 21st so that the family could have fun playing some plastic instruments. Not sure what sort of build dates any Canadian copies of the game show.
I got RB for Christmas, and have really been enjoying it so far. The drums are hard for someone born without rythem like me. The guitar is easier than GH3 I think. Only one song on Hard has sent me into the fetal position temporarily (David Bowie song, can't remember the name), but eventually I got it. It's great for keeping kids occupied for prolonged periods too.

Ishmael198 12-27-07, 03:11 PM Ugh, HOORAY!
Not to cloud up the thread with junk, BUT.
I send EA an email asking for confirmation on how long it will actually take for Canadians, because the submission page clearly stated for express 2-3 day service (I understand it's actually 6-7, but ok), provide your credit card.
So EA support tells me they can't send me anything until after the game launches in Canada (which it did on the 20th!).
Comforting, really.
I'll say no more.
On a lighter note, love the drums!!!!!

But with a double kick pedal. :D
An interesting thing I noticed looking at my busted pedal.... There's no switch or anything electronic that registers the "kick".
The only thing I can guess is maybe there's a motion sensor at the top that can tell when the pedal is depressed? I would have thought they would have used some sort of simple trigger, but I don't see any wires or anything coming from the front part of the base.

it's a magnetic switch. that's the small box that the cord runs into.
Zechman 12-27-07, 05:13 PM Electrically, the RB pedal is a simple momentary contact switch, normally open. So if you want to work up a replacement, you ideally want that same thing.
The FD-8 (or any hi-hat control pedal) is actually a variable resistor--not the same but it might work if the resistance levels are high when up and low when down. Keyboard volume control pedals are pretty much the same thing.
The Pintech K-3 (or any other trigger) is actually a piezo sensor similar to what's in the four pads--and it won't work.
The best place to look is either in footswitches or keyboard sustain pedals, which are momentary switches. Just make sure to use one that is non-latching (Oh, won't THAT make the drumming more difficult...) and normally open. Many pedals are normally closed (like the Roland DP-2).
For $10, I got this one (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MPM-Sustain-Pedal?sku=450428) and found that it works great. Biggest problem is that it's kind of light-weight and migrates across the carpet as I play, so I had to put a backstop behind it. (Also, it requires an adapter to convert from the controller's 1/8" jack to accommodate the pedal's 1/4" plug.)

Interesting.
So if someone were to have a drum pedal lying around, and a simple contact switch, one could concievably make a real kick drum pedal work.
I think I need to go to radio shack suddenly...
RKRocha 12-28-07, 07:20 PM Just a quick note...this game kicks a**! My family is having a lot of fun rockin' out. My mom (51yrs of age) joined in on a set last night for a set of Gimme Shelter! We put on a great show for her and her husband, they couldnt stop laughing and talking about my daughters performance. We have a band linked throught the rockband.com website. If you havent done so yet, you should do it for that extra way for your non-xbox pals to see your progress. We are the Rockin' Rocha Girls...My daughters are the main band members along with me and my brother.
UPDATE: I got the "Pedal Metal" from the eBay auction today... 2 days after I won the auction. I think the guy sent it out within an hour from receiving the PayPal payment.
I installed it and am back to Rawkin'! :D
I will say that now the pedal is a thousand times more solid, yet because the screws are rounded (not flush with the pedal), it is somewhat uncomfortable to play with socks or bare feet. But HeadRusch had a good idea to fix the comfort issue... try covering the surface of the foot pedal with the same black felt used in the pad mod mentioned earlier in this thread! ;)
I might give the felt mod a shot this weekend, but here's what it looks like now:
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb68/DaverJ/pedalfixed.jpg
The eBay seller also has a much nicer graphite mod to strengthen non-broken pedals. The "deluxe" one goes for $30 on eBay, but since mine was broken I had to go with the above one @ $15 + $6 shipping because it screws the broken parts together.
If you need to fix a broken pedal or want to reinforce your current one, I can vouch for "rasehead" on eBay. I think once I get some self-adhesive black felt on that thing it's going to work out pretty nice.
jasonstiller 12-29-07, 12:25 AM Thanks for the review daverj! I worry about the carbon fiber covers because it might be too slick for socks. The diamond plate one should be the one everyone picks up. Has anyone thought about self tapping flat headed screws instead of the dome shaped ones? This 4th party support is pretty sweet!I wonder what they will come up with next! HA HA
the red worm 12-29-07, 02:29 AM So I've owned Rockband since day one and bought the game only with intentions of buying the drum set when they were available by themselves. I already had my gh2 guitar I was happy with (didn't like the feel of the RB guitar from a few plays at BB demo kiosk)
I have done guitar and vocal careers on hard and can see myself beating both of those careers on expert when I put a little more time into them.
At a big family gathering tonight my niece brought her RB drumset to go along with our gh guitars and random logitech mic I got a little while back. I stayed in my comfort zone of playing guitar and singing most of the night but after a while I finally tried drums. I started on easy to get the feel of it and was hitting 90-95% my first few play throughs so I quickly jumped to medium. After about ten total songs of drums under my belt now I can honestly say I can't wait for the drum kit to be sold seperately. It'll be like a brand new game to me when I can get that to add the drums into the mix.
I was excited before to get the drumkit, now I'm anxiously waiting.
OnlookerDelay 12-29-07, 11:42 AM I send EA an email asking for confirmation on how long it will actually take for Canadians, because the submission page clearly stated for express 2-3 day service (I understand it's actually 6-7, but ok), provide your credit card.
I really hate to hear that people are having this sort of experience with getting warranty replacements.
Just to give you slice of the the opposite end of this exchange, the strummer broke within 2 hours on our Christmas day Rock Band outfit. I got online and submitted an RMA the minute it became apparent. Yesterday afternoon at 4:00 PM, UPS showed up with our replacement guitar!
This wouldn't mean anything if the replacement had a substandard strummer or one that failed in short order. It feels great and hasn't missed a beat in probably 10 hours of heavy use since.
A guitar strummer working according to design is a must for the full enjoyment of this game. We were able to nurse the floppy strummer and garner some 90% performances, but I felt like I was fighting the guitar the whole time as opposed to feeling the song. That has changed with this new guitar!
We used the dead strummer guitar as a bass and it's easier to tolerate is strummer disfunction when used in this capacity. It's good enough to let me know that we're really going to have a complete package when the new Wireless guitars, with the new strummer design hit the market next month. :D
So EA support tells me they can't send me anything until after the game launches in Canada (which it did on the 20th!).
I'm in the United States (South Carolina)... I've got to figure there's some obscure business law or procedure that's complicating Canadian returns. It wouldn't be good or fair business practice for EA to give USA customers this much preference.
On a lighter note, love the drums!!!!!
The drums really are surprisingly well made and solid. I think they'll hold up to the pounding based on what I've seen so far.
You'll be amazed at how your impression of the guitar will change once you get one with the redesigned strummer. I now feel it's on equal footing with the drums.
The mike is a Logitech, but I don't want to sell it short either. It doesn't feel like a toy and does a great job sonically. I'm really amazed that they are able to package and sell this kit for what they do! I think they're making an investment for downloadble premium content and add-on packs! :)
randy5554 12-29-07, 01:54 PM It's now been 1 month, and I have yet to receive my replacement guitar. I did not do the $100 down-payment shipping. I received the empty box and mailed my broken guitar back in. I have a tracking number for the replacement, but it still has not been shipped. I emailed EA, and they basically told me to be patient because they have so many RMAs.
OK, last pic... I promise! :o
I added two layers of self-adhesive felt to the top of my "metalized" pedal pictures above... mainly for comfort when playing without shoes.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb68/DaverJ/pedalfelt.jpg
I'm happy with it now... much more solid and durable, and cozy under my feet. I'm ready to rock! \m/
logicalnoise 01-01-08, 09:00 AM DLC for this week:
"Gimme Three Steps" as performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Hard to Handle" as made famous by the Black Crowes
"Limelight" as made famous by Rush
All songs are 160 Microsoft Points. There is no bundle for the songs.
damn it, hopefully my 360 gets back to me by next week.
Oh cool... Limelight will be a good one! I wonder why Rush can't/won't let the original masters be used for the game?
Anyway, I think over this break I've been playing the drums too much -- I've developed a pain in my right wrist* (the high-hat & crash hand). Right now I'm looking for possible solutions to alleviate this pain, like a wrist brace or something like that. If any drummers have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.
(*I know I've just opened myself up to "other possible causes of wrist pain" jokes. )
Dave is going to a couple thousand invested after all the mods, ebay purchases, doctor visits, and physical therapy visits.

...add mental therapy to that list. :o
BoomerBrian 01-01-08, 11:43 AM I am probably going to pick up RB this week. Does anybody know if they have fixed the strumbar on the guitars?
I played a little guitar solo career, and it dawned on me... the order of songs for each career is different!
I don't know if that's common knowledge or has been obvious from day one, but I just realized it. :o

Yep, it changes based on difficulty of the instrument you're using.
It changes in the band quick play as well, based on which instrument is choosing the song.

Man I am continually amazed by the DLC for this game. I really like all 3 of these. A lot of the songs they've released aren't really my taste, I've only bought 5 or 6 so far. But I'll be grabbing all of these. Music is so subjective...every song that makes someone sick is someone else's favorite song. But I think the DLC already has something for just about anyone's taste. Well done Harmonix or whoever is producing the new songs!

UPDATE: I hope this helps others out....
I consulted with a friend who was a pro drummer and drum teacher about my wrist pain. He showed that I my drumming motion was completely wrong and was the cause of the pain.
I was holding the sticks thumb up and rotating the wrist, so my high hat motion and cymbal strikes was like pounding a nail with a hammer. Completely wrong.
He explained that the back of hand should point up. And from elbow to knuckles there should be a straight line (not a perfect line, but close). The wrist is still doing a lot of the stick movement, along with some slight elbow and fingertip control.
He also said that, even with proper technique, some drummers still develop wrist problems... usually carpel tunnel.
So advice the aspiring wanna-be RockBand drummers... check your technique. If you are pounding the drums like a hammer as I was, you might be playing wrong. :o
jasonstiller 01-02-08, 11:53 AM Doesnt the tutorial show you how to grip the sticks?
I downloaded a couple of this weeks tracks, and all I can say is that Gimmie Three Steps kicks all sorts of ass. Easily now in my top 5 songs in the game.
formulanerd 01-02-08, 06:19 PM so i finally found an EB Games with a few in stock, so i get it home, and the F*#$%#$ green pad on the drums does NOT work... at all.
i just know that the douchebags at EB games wont give me a replacement or a refund, and i'm gonna have to ship this pile of S#$% in to get fixed.
formulanerd 01-02-08, 11:51 PM well it wasnt easy, but i got EB games to accept my return, and exchanged it for the last one they had in stock, luckily the drums work flawlessly, havent tested out the guitar or mic, but i dont give a crap about those anyway.
darklordjames 01-03-08, 01:03 AM If you already knew that EB is filled with douchebags, then why did you give them your business? There are plenty of other places to shop. Hell, BestBuy and Circuit City are filled with douchebags too, but at least they have an acceptable return policy.
Homeless 01-03-08, 01:32 AM 2 things...
1) I want to replace my guitar. I live in Canada but bought it in the states, so I realize that it may take longer to get here. The problem is that I can't login to EA support site. I click the options they give you, telling them it is a faulty strum bar, then it says I need an account. I created one, and when I try to login (for the last 2 weeks at least) it keeps coming up "Internal Server Error. Please try Again Later" Anyone experience this and have a solution?
2) Anyone have any tips on beating "Run to the Hills" for the drums on Hard? It is the only song I have yet to beat and it is driving me nuts. I have gone to practice and can get the beat up to 70 or 80% speed, but at full speed it is not pretty and I'm done quickly...

Never mind I managed to get on the site and order my replacement guitar. I had to change my password and clear my cookies. Anyone else have to wait in Canada for the guitar due to border delays?
I still need the tips on Run to the Hills though...lol

because i've been searching low and high for ANYONE with a copy in stock since release, and nothing.
i called every single retailer including walmart/kmart/target before finally finding 2 bundles in stock at EB games.
and its not about the return policy, it's the big stupid sticker that says "DO NOT RETURN THIS (ALREADY)DEFECTIVE ITEM TO THE STORE!"
KLUNKDM 01-03-08, 06:43 AM They have been sold out in my city for a while now, I did find some at EB Games last night, but they had a November sticker on the bottom of the box. I noticed that EB Games put a yellow sticker on the top of the box saying that if anything was faulty, then you cannot return the product to the store and there was a web address for EA to get the product fixed. I decided to wait a while and see if anyone gets a newer date on the box. I know that BB and CC has them on the web site now, so I am waiting until they get them in the store. I still have a few more things to get anyway for the mods. I have some neoprene rubber so I can make some pads (Still need to cut them yet), I have bought the stuff for the kick pedal and I am just waiting on a friend to find an old kick pedal to give to me :)
logicalnoise 01-03-08, 06:44 AM The feburary 08 OXM is going to have "exclusive" DLC:
* Freezepop — "Sprøde"
* Bang Camaro — "Rock Rebellion"
* Count Zero — "Shake"
It's said to be exclusive but usually OXM is just time exclusive we may see these song later has free DLC(likely a month or so later). I personally won't be able to wait Freezepop is awesome as is bang comaro and count zero had a pretty cool song on GH2.
ALSO! Anyone else see rock band on COnan last night? Great stuff.

That doesn't mean it can't be returned - every store's return policy should still apply (although most stores do not accept opened video games). Lots of electronics say that, especially items like TVs.
Anyone have any tips on beating "Run to the Hills" for the drums on Hard?
Give up... it can't be done.
:D ...I keed -- I've gotten past the halfway point, so I guess with practice it will eventually be conquered.
One thing to notice is the high-hat starts on yellow (as usual) for the intro, but then they move it to red and put the snare on yellow. I think this is the only chart that has a snare on yellow? Very confusing, but it makes sense.
For the main chorus I've tried double tapping with the left hand and alternate between red/kick and snare with the right. This works well slowed down in practice, but at full speed it's next to impossible to do that many accurate double-taps with the left hand, so I would say that's the wrong way to do it. :o
I think the key to this song is learning which hand to start the rolls, because the right hand has to alternate positions on the correct beat. It's a very very tough song!
Study this guy... he's YouTube's RockBand god (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7Bk8kb7Pow).
scottro 01-03-08, 07:38 AM I finally had time to play some more solo career on drums last night - I can't believe how I blew threw GG&HT on hard after struggling with it on medium for so long. (I know you made a similar comment like last month DaverJ, but I'm lagging behind your skills, I was hoping to catch up to you b/c of your broken pedal :) ) Anyway I really dig the skill progression you pick up without even realizing it.
My foam mod bit the dust on the pads. Red and yellow compressed where the sticks contact them all the time, started bubbling up like a blister. Next thing I'm gonna try is dipping the tips of my sticks in some "Plasti-Dip" - the rubber coating stuff you use on the handles of your pliers, etc. I've already got it in the basement, I figure it's worth a shot.
logicalnoise 01-03-08, 07:52 AM I think once I get my 360 back me and daver are going to have to do some tug of war and score duels.

I'd be up for some humiliation. Hopefully the pain in my wrist isn't a career-ending injury. :o

I'd be up for some as well, they are pretty fun. I'm probably not as good as DaverJ, but I play pretty decent on Hard, still working on the last tier. Anyone who wants to duel, or just jam on Band Quickplay, send me an invite: LandShark22x. I'm tired of playing with random people on XBL

Need help deciding which game... GH3 bundle or RB Bundle (please no flame war).
Heres the deal... we have GH2 with the xplorer guitar now and the wife and I love it. I really want a second guitar so we could play coop. It started me thinking GH3 bundle is the way to go. However, we aren't all that great and hard is the best we can do in GH2... it's my understanding that GH3 is much harder.
So now I'm thinking about RB as the difficulty (at least for guitars) is more our speed, and the allure of drums is calling me. I also really like RB's model for downloadable content and would be up for some occasional vocals. Please understand most times it would only be two people playing (the wife and I) and sometimes solo. We would rarely have a full band (although it will be a blast to have some friends over).
So the million dollar question, would RB satisfy for 1-2 players or should we just stick to GH for solo and coop?

If anything buy RB just because even with only 2 players the Band world tour mode blows away anything GH3 has as far as co-op play. Plus having the option to play two extra parts of a song is always good.

I think you've answered your own question. ;)
RB is a decent single player game... less "videogame"ish than the GH games, but still a lot of fun. Two player co-op is even better. Harmonix definitely knows how to chart a music-based rhythm game. And if you get hooked on playing the drums (*ahem* :o), going back to the guitar controller starts to loose it's luster.
And RockBand can't be touched for 3 and 4 player jammin'!
But what else to do expect to hear in a RockBand thread? :D
Yeah, my mind is sort of made up with RB. I'm just looking for assurance that 1-2 player is "enough" with the occasional full band.
ferrisg 01-03-08, 03:54 PM Yeah, my mind is sort of made up with RB. I'm just looking for assurance that 1-2 player is "enough" with the occasional full band.
Just think about the number of great two person bands out there. If they can do it for real, I'm sure it'll work for you and your wife in RB. And you get it even better because you've got the game to fill in the unplayed band members so you're not just jamming to nothing.
Also, if you think hard on GH2 is hard, you'll probably hate a good chunk of GH3. The easier note charts aren't that fun, and the harder note charts are pretty tough. They made the timing easier, but that only helps so much.
darklordjames 01-03-08, 04:42 PM You already have the best version of the Guitar Hero games, so you may as well jump over to Rock Band. :) In my house, we play alot of 2-player Rock Band. We have two Les Paul's, GH2, GH3, and RB. We are about to pick up a mic, but probably won't ever get the drums (interest is there, just don't have the space to devote to them). GH3 was the first game we got, but we play RB the most, followed by GH2. Occasionally we can convince visitors to sing for us. :)
RKRocha 01-03-08, 04:43 PM Definitely go with RB. You and the wife can jam in a 'band' , battle with tug of war and score duel. You will surely find a song or two or ten that you like and one of you will surely pick up the mic and sing. You already said you have the urge for the drums and once you see them, you may never touch the guitar again as one poster already mentioned. My house had a 3hr jam session on Sunday night with a full band and it was really fun.
