Hello everyone,

I'm a new poster here at AVS...have been reading and gathering info for a while, but I have a question that I'm hoping you can help me with. Currently, I have a Panasonic S53K going to my Samsung LN-T4661F(46" 1080P) via HDMI. The impression I got when purchasing this upconverter was that the quality, while not quite HD-DVD, would be much better than a standard DVD quality. However, upon playing a number of DVD's that I own, such as 300, The Day After Tomorrow and Transformers (rented) the quality was not very good at all. It also seemed as though I was playing them with a standard DVD player on a large television.

I have the output quality set to 1080P and every other setting I can find seems to be set correctly, but the quality still isn't nearly what I was expecting. The picture seems to be darker, the colors aren't very good, and it's not very clear at all. I was told that it's possible my Samsung is double-coverting the signal, which would cause a problem, but I don't know how to check for that. I was also told about the AVIA DVD that I could use, but I'm skeptical that that could help me set anything different than I have already tried.

I have checked and there are no firmware updates for either the DVD player or Samsung, so I'm REALLY hoping you guys can give me some tips, especially those of you that own this particular upconverter. Thanks for reading this, and any help is greatly appreciated.

I haven't used either device, but in general:

(1) Turn on 1:1 pixel mapping if there is any way to do so on that display.

(2) Turn off any video image enhancement options in the display.

(3) Use a calibration disc. Brief notes here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9889995&&#post9889995

(4) Understand that using a "standard DVD player on a large television" is exactly what you are doing. You can get good results, but there are limits.
