I've been digging through the Surge Protector threads, and see many references to UPS units that include surge protection and AVR. I had a basic question that I couldn't seem to find an answer for.

We're setting up a basic surround sound/HDTV system that will include a Sony LCD TV, Onkyo 605 receiver, older DVD player, older CD player. No cable box as of now, but I'm guessing we'll end up there. 5 speakers, plus subwoofer. The components will all be in or on a stand, except the subwoofer which will be across the room.

I started by looking for surge protection options -- why would UPS be beneficial? No computers will be plugged in.

Thanks!

Some devices, particularly displays, have shutdown procedures. Displays usually use this to allow the cooling fan to run after turning off the bulb. One thing about UPS is you want to get one that constantly runs off of battery so there is no switchover in the event of a failure, and if possible one that puts out a pure waveform.

ups = battery + some surge protection +/- avr (not all ups have this, takes care of variations in electricity)
why ups?
...you get to shut everything down nicely :)
...you're not stuck with buying from the "monster" products

littlesaint... i was first... why did you submit before me??? ;)
