Ok i've read but am lost as to which currently available upscaling dvd player to get for non hdmi equipment. I don't want to purchase a unit that can't be hacked. My projector is a sharp XR10XL and would like to view dvd's at 720p/1080i. Please help in advising. Are all the OPPO units hackable?
Thanks

Only the Oppo 970 is hackable.

It looks like the 970s are no longer available. Most of the others listed in the emergency post are hard to find. Is there anything still available for us folks who do not have HDMI? DIVX and USB support would be gravy but not a deal breaker for me. Also if it was something I could find in the next day or two in a local big box store would be helpful.

I don't recall the name (something Fury ?? ) but analog PJ folks use this device to convert from HDMI/DVI to component output. Check in the PJ forums.

And, probably still the best way (and most expensive) to get SD DVDs scaled is to use SDI output from modded DVD player into a external scaler.

Interesting that the 970HD is no longer available. Until the new 983 comes out Oppo won't have a non-Faroudja based player for those that have displays susceptible to the enhanced macro-blocking effect. Or get used 970HD at the usual places.

The 980 is non-Faroudja; it uses a custom Mediatek chip.

Looks like HK Flix still has the 970, an authorized dealer too. The 970 page even shows the hack. Don't get the last one please!

Tim, I found that site about the same time you posted. I tried to email to confirm that they have them in stock. I got a thanks for emailing email. Then I decided to go ahead and order one. If all else fails they are out and I cancel the order. Apparently hkflix is in Hawaii. Hopefully, the player does not take the beating that my BSU broncos did in Hawaii.

Is it the HD Fury? As you will see I am trying to understand all this with my simple mind but here goes. It appears to convert to RGB only, requiring an adapter to component which the Fury probably would not like as it looks like it is very sensitive to cable length. Does that sound like a reasonable conclusion?
