I looked for an answer to my question, but didn't find one, so please forgive me if this has been answered.

When the HD DVD and Blu Ray players were announced, it was stated that only the full HD signal (not talking 1080P) would be output the HDMI port on the players. It was stated that the video out the component ports would only be a seudo-HD signal, better than 480p but not HD.

This kept me from considering getting and HD DVD or Blu Ray player since my 50" Toshiba doesn't have HDMI or DVI inputs on it. I am limited to component only.

I have read that the Studios never implemented this option on the discs that they have produced. Is this true?

I have just purchased a Toshiba A3 player (couldn't pass up the 10 free HD DVD deal). I am trying to figure out if I can use it on the 50" in my living room or am I stuck only using it on the 32" LCD in my office.

I do understand that I won't get SD upconversion via the component ports. I will just have a standard 480p signal.

Thanks for answering my question.

You will get 1080i from component on HD DVDs. The studios never implemented that option as you read.

You will get 480p over component for any copy-protected dvd.

You can upconvert backed up dvds or non-copyrighted dvds over component.

Yes. The player will send SD DVDs at 480p.
