View Full Version : Assassin's Creed vs. COD4 Sales
lockheede 11-22-07, 02:29 AM Just checked out vgcahartz (http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39404) sales for AC and COD4 and was VERY surprised that AC outsold COD4 in first week sales.
COD4 - 507.659
AC - 585,064
Same thing for PS3
COD4 - 194,451
AC - 226,177
Is anybody else surprised by this?
longhorns 11-22-07, 03:02 AM hell yeah, no online for assassins creed, bad reviews, COD4, GREAT PLOT + ENDING, and fantastic online, assassins creed=rental, COD4=BUY
darklordjames 11-22-07, 03:39 AM Assassin's Creed has had better marketing and more hype. I'm not surprised at all by this. AC is Ubi's big game of the season, while Activision's was Guitar Hero 3. :)
leftkidney 11-22-07, 04:11 AM who cares about sales other than the game makers?
just because a lot of people have bought a game doesent make it good, it just means they did a good jod at selling and marketing it
but the actual sales of the games mean nothing in the first month or so because unless you have played the game you dont know if it is any good
like COD 3 and 4, both of them you cant turn off the music in the game, fo rme that makes it unplayable so just because it sold a lot and a lot of people bought it means nothing unless you ask those people latter
so again who cares about sales?
AC a bit different
COD4 more of the same
????
FrankJ.Cone 11-22-07, 08:10 AM A lot of shooter fans are still (and will be for ages to come) playing Halo 3 and passed on CoD4. (crazy people!)
darklordjames 11-22-07, 08:14 AM Those wouldn't be shooter fans at that point then. Those would be Halo fans.

thats because they wont make another halo3. we'll likely see another CoD in a year or two.
One-week totals of over half a million units for each game means is pretty impressive considering all the competition.
FreeBaGeL 11-22-07, 10:53 AM These weren't released in the same week. Is this AC's 1st week vs. CoD4's 1st week or AC's 1st week vs. CoD4 that same week?

Nope too busy playing both and Mass Effect to be surprised about anything other than I got so many great games to play. AC great single player game(don't care what some bad reviews say, it is their opinion not concerned about it, COD4 great single and multi even though they complained about the short single player. Doesn't effect me again too many games and a personal life to be affect about claims of just a 6 hour campaing(still haven't beat it yet) Mass Effect(:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D)
dpe8598 11-22-07, 11:13 AM I really really really wouldnt take VGchartz this seriously. It can be a fun site to look at, but in the last year its been way off on several sales figures.

i dont agree with this, i've seen maybe one AC commercial... hell i see plenty of COD4 commercials, people are playing it in TV shows (chuck), etc etc.
all i've heard about AC, aside from the lackluster reviews is that single commercial.
speaking of them playing on chuck, they were playing on live and i managed to see 2 gamertags, "Neonn" and "FairfaxPunkz"
i wonder if they're real, or already cancelled their accounts?
MPresseau 11-22-07, 01:05 PM I'm all shootered out. And I'm sure that many feel this way as well. Also, I'm getting bored of multiplayer. For me, a good single player campaign trumps multiplayer every time. I haven't bought either game yet, but if I had to choose, AC would be the one. Not only is it a good game, it's a new IP, and it's very much different than anything else currently available. Not only that but I've got to show some support for my peeps here in Montreal.
I wouldn't trust VGChartz.com for their weekly sales of games.

Assassin's Creed got plenty of great reviews. It even got a 9 at Gamespot, which is more than great games like Metriod and Mass Effect got. Not sure what you have against Assassin's Creed.
Personally, I felt like COD4 is a rental. I'm not seeing anything that different to distinguish itself in the sea of shooters this fall. I'm not into multiplayer, so that aspect doesn't do much for me.
GrooveRite 11-22-07, 02:09 PM I haven't bought or rented COD4 yet and quite frankly, I don't think i ever will because I have zero interest in it. AC was a rental for me though because I was intrigued with the story. I'm enjoying AC right now!
COD4 is mostly a stellar multiplayer game. The campaign is really quite short.
But the multiplayer is really amazing. Not everything is unlocked from the start, as in most multiplayer shooters. You have to level up in order to unlock various weapons and perks. Then you have to level up those weapons in order to get different scopes and attachments. It takes a LONG time to get to level 55.
But if you don't like multiplayer, then yeah, I'd skip COD4. Unless you are willing to try out a multiplayer game that is really quite different from the rest of the bunch.
too many shooters on 360 so theres fair bit of competition. AC is new and original making it unique.
RobertR1 11-22-07, 02:30 PM I wouldn't put too much stock into VGChartz. Wait on NPD numbers. It's a long wait though :(

I'm not necessarily a fan of shooters, but how many shooters would you consider just right? I'll admit that there are a lot of shooters, but "too many" is something else altogether.

In a span of month, we got "orange box", "Cod4" "Area 51" "Soldier of Fortune", "Time shift" and "Halo 3". Considering the crowded shooter market I'd say thats good sales figure.
Rakesh.S 11-22-07, 02:58 PM what did you expect? all the kids were drooling over Jade Raymond....ubisoft played this one perfectly.
the game isn't half bad either.
mboojigga 11-22-07, 03:30 PM UBI already claimed it made a million sales since launching.
spelosi 11-23-07, 01:04 AM I fully expected to pick up COD4 when it came out. Assassin's Creed caught my eye right around the beginning of november, and I decided to hold off on COD4 and buy AC (when it was released a week after COD4).
I guess some other people decided to do the same. I don't regret it.

way too many 7's for it to be a coincidence. 1up, IGN, gamespy, teamxbox......all gave it 7's and all had the same things that they didn't like about it.

ubisoft actually sponsored a couple episodes of "future weapons" and a weekend on comedy central so there would be 2 minute commercials playing every break.

I guess you just happened to skip over the not 1, not 2, not 3, but 12 reviews over 90%? But that must just be a coincidence, right? Some critics were a bit disappointed, sure. But to for anyone to make a blanket statement by saying, Assassin's Creed was a badly reviewed game. Give me a break

Gabe's post on this day explains the Assassin reviews pretty well. For those too lazy to click through, here's the money shot:
"Imagine what an open ended sandbox title must look like to a reviewer especially right now. How many games do they have piling up on their desks? A game like Assassins Creed isn't meant to be played under a deadline. You shouldn't be trying to beat it as fast as you can so you can move on to Mass Effect or Mario Galaxy. As soon as I gave myself a deadline all of a sudden I understood all their complaints."
properbostonian 11-23-07, 08:01 AM Hey, it's great news that both games are selling well!

hahahha. he said "bad reviews", not that it was a badly reviewed game. there were 5-6 bad reviews.
NoThru22 11-23-07, 01:11 PM These weren't released in the same week. Is this AC's 1st week vs. CoD4's 1st week or AC's 1st week vs. CoD4 that same week?
The first poster was unclear, but going to the site you can see that it's COD4's first week (of Nov 11) versus Assassin's first week (of Nov 18.)
hahahha. he said "bad reviews", not that it was a badly reviewed game. there were 5-6 bad reviews.
A 7 is not a bad review. Wow. Where do you see bad reviews?
TheCrackedJack 11-23-07, 01:14 PM hahahha. he said "bad reviews", not that it was a badly reviewed game. there were 5-6 bad reviews.
It's a wrong statement. 7's are not "bad reviews" the last time I checked.
Halo 3 received 6 reviews of 80% or less. I guess you could say it got bad reviews too? http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/halo3
When you just say bad reviews, it means that more than not, that whatever we are talking about received poor reviews in general.
That's like saying Lord of the Rings got bad reviews, because 5 or 6 critics out of 40 gave it a less than stellar score  I don't understand it. If someone wanted to say that it some critics rated it average, I won't argue.

 You have to actually read the reviews. Those reviewers that gave the game 7's all say that they were happy with some things but disappointed on the game as a whole. I consider that a bad review.
And no. When you say that something received bad reviews, it doesn't mean that it was overall a badly reviewed game. In the context of longhorns original statement, it means that it received some bad reviews which could cause people to question this game as a GOTY contender. I suppose I could put the word "some" in there so you don't get confused

From 1UP (Score of 70).
"It attempts a lot of ambitious things and it almost succeeds at every one. But it's apparent that these grandiose ideas may have been a little too much to master the first go-round. But hey, at least the groundwork is laid for a killer sequel -- right, Ubisoft?"
I don't consider that to be a bad review, no. Go look at the Gamespot review for Lair, if you want to see an example of a bad review.
And please, their was no context to the original statement (Outside of him thinking COD4 should have outsold AC). If GOTY contestants were even mentioned in the thread prior to the original post, I'd agree, but they weren't. Not sure where you're getting that from. But if you want to sell me whatever device your using to read longhorns mind, I might be interested.
I'd say AC had better marketing. Heck, they pretty much bought every other ad during the Guitar Hero episode of South Park.

Depends on what networks you watch. AC was advertised a lot on Spike TV. It was also advertised a lot during UFC 78 pay-per-view and the fighter series. Some fighters had banners, little clips(brought to you by AC), ect. I also seen that FX advertise it quite a bit. I don't know what this "chuck" TV show is as I didn't see to many COD 4 commercials. I did see a lot more AC commercials spread across many different networks, some especially advertised it more. So I have to disagree with you disagreeing. ;)
dbburns 11-23-07, 02:56 PM I don't know what this "chuck" TV show is as I didn't see to many COD 4 commercials.LOL. It is a pretty good TV show on NBC. At the beginning of the episode, Morgan asked Chuck if he wanted to play some CoD4. They work at Buy More (read Best Buy). Then they made a point of walking in front of all of the big screen TVs and other TVs throughout the store that were displaying the game. Pretty blatant example of product placement, one that was much too in-your-face for my tastes.
chad473 11-23-07, 03:15 PM a lot of videogame references on chuck. If I recall morgan was playing gears of war a few weeks back, and there was also a guitar hero reference in one of the first episodes.

I see! I may check this TV series out. I'm always looking for something good to watch on TV with my spare time.

Errr...we can pick out quotes all day and go back and forth. Stuff like...
"Regardless, turning Altaïr into a medieval Spider-Man in order to reach high points is one of the best parts about the game. Or at least until you get sick of it -- which will likely happen very quickly."
and
"Instead, you have to take a more defensive stance and learn to parry, counterattack, and throw enemies. All of this works really well at first, but after a while, it gets so plodding that you'll likely opt to skip fighting altogether."
So in essence, he says the one of the best parts of the game is something you'll get sick of "very quickly" and another of the best parts is something that "gets so plodding you'll likely skip it altogether"
Not exactly glowing points there for what he points out as the BEST parts of the game. If anything, it seemed like that last paragraph was almost something that was slapped on because he had listed so many faults.
Anyway, this all comes down to the definition of "bad". A seven is not a bad review in general, but for a game as hyped up as this one a seven is fairly bad.
I in no way think AC is a bad game. I'm having a lot of fun with it. But compared to what most hoped it was going to be it is a far step down.

And, of course, there are the dozen of so reviews that will say the exact opposite of those quotes. My whole point (starting back on page 1) was that Assassin's Creed received average to great reviews, not bad ones. Like I said, some reviewers were disappointed. But a great deal of them thought it was an overall amazing experience (hence the 12 review's over 90 percent). I'll just leave it at that.
