View Full Version : 2007 - a bad year for movie releases?

My DVD disc cataloging software has this statistical function that I rarely use, but I recently noticed something that alarmed me. The software keeps track of the number of discs I own by "theatrical release year." The thing that surprised me is that 2007 is ranked #16 in frequency. I've listed the actual number below. Also, all but one of my 2007 theatrical release purchases have been HDM. I realize that 2007 is not over yet, but I was wondering if others were seeing similar patterns.

Based on my own buying patterns as a single data point I would say that 2007 is a terrible year to depend on for accelerating HDM.

Do others have similar or contrasting statistics? Am I that far off center?

Theatrical Release Date:

2007: 9
2006: 45
2005: 47

Here are some things to consider:

1. Of course, the year is not over yet! We haven't even gotten into fall theatrical releases on video, and I feel that more good movies come out later in the year (awards season). So, I'll be buying new titles from 2007, and more of them, well into April and May of next year.

2. Do you only buy new releases? While your 2007 titles are all new, I'd bet that your statistics from previous years include titles you didn't buy until later, because you hadn't discovered them yet, or because they got cheaper as time went on. Of the movies that are released each year, I only buy about 12-15 of them when they're new, but I easily end up doubling that total later as I find movies I wasn't interested in at the time, or have reached a price point I find worthy. There are always those titles you want but don't want to pay a new release premium for.

3. Some titles were delayed or not released at all. Examples would be Zodiac, pre-Hairspray New Line titles, titles Fox would have released during their hiatus, and titles that weren't deemed worthy of an HD release (such as Waitress :().

Also, you have a few duplicate entries in your 2006 list. ;)

BTW, what software is it and how would I get a list like this?

Based on my own buying patterns as a single data point I would say that 2007 is a terrible year to depend on for accelerating HDM.

Well there's your problem.

If you want to judge whether it's a good year for pushing HDM sales, look at thhe box office, not your own personal collection. You are not an accurate representation of the market as a whole, and therefore your collection is a poor place to look for proper positive or negative indicators of commercial viability amongst 2007 films.

I agree with this. 2007 has not been a good year for movie releases. I think more and more people are getting kind of sick of all the rehashed sequels and remakes and want something new and different. I mean, when you've got a 60 year old man doing yet another rocky movie (which was awful by the way) things have gotten pretty sad.

I remember in Airplane they had a poster that said "Rocky 2000" or something on it, indicating how many sequels there have been, and that about sums up 2007.

?

2007 has already set a record . . 4 movies to go over $300 million - never been done before . . . ever!

2007 will be the year that 3D has been given another rebirth and this time it looks like it may actually get out of the infant stage and go on to being a toddler

I am really in a disagreement mode with these thread titles that state "for the masses" but when you read the OP - it is just one persons reflection on how it has affected him:(

I completely disagree. Frankly I found your tastes a little confounding. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I am quite thankful that there weren't more movies released this year along the lines of Next, Ghost Rider, Shrek 3, and FF4 2.

Correct, 300, Transformers, Spidey 3(I like it, millions other do too), Shooter, PoTC 3(refer to my spidey comment), Bourne 3, etc.

Not too bad for me, but I am into these types of films.

Many here think if a film is made after 1985, it must be garbage (not you Miata), I think we are still getting great films today that will resonate in 20-30 years as others from the past have.

Yes. This is probably a key factor. I have quite a bit of HD/SD double dipping prior to 2007. Maybe my list will get closer as the start buying end of year releases.

BTW, what software is it and how would I get a list like this?
This is software called DVDPedia. I know it is available for the Mac, but not sure about Windows.

As Lee mentioned below, there are a few very large hits this year, and I have purchased many of the biggies.. I just feel like there has not been that much breadth in titles. It would be interesting to compare to box office performance, but I think that for many people there are differences between what you will watch at a theater and what you will pay money for a disc that you want to be able to play over and over. I know that now that I am buying new titles almost exclusively in HD, I disqualify many discs that are not top notch video or audio quality. I was not quite as critical when I purchased DVDs.

I would like to go back to my original question -- restating. Are people generally buying a greater or lesser number of discs than in previous years?

Well, there is the fact that hdm cost more, and the bar to actually pull the trigger and buy something in hdm is now higher for most people compared to DVD.

That there is DVD also means that even if a release goes to discount bin at 8.99 two months later, the availability of hdm would mean the hdm owner is less likely to pick one up.

In the past, there are DVD movies and box sets that I don't pick up on release day, that I can still get months later from the bargain bins if the packaging looks nice, or if I might conceivably have time to kill this weekend.

kamspy
11-22-07, 01:33 PM
I bought about 40 DVDs at the MOST before HDM.

Just didn't see the value, I rented.

I am over 100 HDM titles, guess it can be chalked up to my perceived value.

It seems like all of the big hit blockbuster movies were critically panned and most didn't like them. Spiderman 3, shrek 3, potc 3, ff4, weren't must buy movies.

Are people generally buying a greater or lesser number of discs than in previous years?

According to an article I read months ago . . . Sony said that in 2006 - the average household bought 14.7 discs. This was up from 12.5 two years earlier. So I believe people are buying more discs but not really many more than they bought the year before. In 3 years rentals have gone from less than 10% to over 30% (of total DVD revenue). I suspect that for 2007 - the number will be over 36%

The higher number of discs could be at least partially attributed to the abundance of cheap catalog titles.

Exactly - 14.7 does not mean BB titles - it could meean more $5.00 titles.:o

We are now officially under $3.00. WM is selling DVD's for $2.98:eek:

I think it is to early to judge that. 2007 isnt over and youve got plenty of time to buy. Besides, this summer was by far the greatest summer of movies I have ever seen so give it time for all of those to hit home.

I thought this was a pretty stinko year for new movies, really the last three years have been pretty weak. Whenever I see AT THE MOVIES, FILM COMMENT, or even ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY "years best" run-throughs, I've felt "man stuff just keeps on slipping". Sure that's all my opinion, but most of the sequels were bad films, and the crop of fall prestige-pictures isn't terribly provocative at all. When I saw MICHAEL CLAYTON (good movie), all the trailers for the dramatic heavy-hitters didn't do a thing for me.

The new Cohen Bros' NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN looks good, and I missed the Cronenberg film, EASTERN PROMISES, but that seemed worthwhile and is on my HD list.

Here is the thing about movies and box office though. To be honest, a movie doing over $300 million won't surprise me at all considering the cost involved with actually going to the movies today. We took my son to see Bee Movie, and we remembered why we don't go to the movies. For the 3 of us, the tickets alone were $25 and change! Adult tickets to our local theater are $9.75 a piece!!! That is insane!

Anyone here from New York City?

Did I read that a ticket is almost up to $12?:(

PS: I think (not sure) that the price of a movie ticket is controlled by the city of New York. If a theater wants to raise the price they have to petition the city for an increase.

Excellent point. I took four kids to see that movie. The movie was better that I expected, but all I could think was that I could get anywhere from 2-4 HDM titles for the $40 it cost us for watching in the theater -- and feeling guilty the whole time for not buying popcorn or drinks:o

That is exactly right. I looked to my wife and said "We could have waited and bought the HD DVD for $30 and at least get to KEEP THE MOVIE.

Anyway, this is why I take very little stake in box office numbers anymore. We skipped out on seeing a lot of movies this year just to wait for them to come out on either DVD or HD DVD, depending.

It's just not worth going to the theater anymore.

I'm with you. I wait for the DVD/HD DVD. Here in Chicago, to catch a movie it's $10.50. Then you've got cab fare to and from (potentially parking if you drive). Add in popcorn and drinks, and it's easy to be at $30 to see a movie by yourself! I've only paid $30 for two of my HD DVDs, and that was because I just had to see Transformers and Knocked Up on release day. I couldn't make myself wait a week to snag a new/used copy on ebay for under $20 shipped for those two, LOL.

I personally think that 2007 was a pretty weak year for movies, but there were some fun things worthy of purchase.

However, we have radically different tastes, it seems. You bought Ghost Rider.

I decidedly see fewer movies now than I used to. All things being equal I would rather watch a movie in my basement than at a theater, irregardless of cost. That said, my theater going experiences have been getting a lot more expensive of late. I will pretty much see everything that comes out to the Imax and that runs $12. We just got the first Sundance Theater which is OUTSTANDING. They even have assigned seats. I try to catch movies here as they are Indie movies presented in a class way. Its $8.50 but then they charge a "concierge fee" of $2 during the week and $3 on weekends. Its a great new theater but gracious it is spendy. Otherwise I buy 10 packs to Marcus Cinemas with 5 free popcorn coupons for $55. I figure that makes it $5 to see a movie. The whole industry is trying to develop the theater going event into a special evening. For the most part when they succeed it is where I prefer to watch.

There are plenty of good movies from 2007 that will be added to many people's collections as time goes on. As others have stated, there are quite a few great movies which haven't made it to Disc yet, and some that haven't even been released yet in theaters. If you managed to buy things like "Cheetah Girls 2" and "Bring It On 37" from 2006, I'm sure you will find PLENTY of titles to add to your collection from 2007!

As others have stated, the cost of going to the movies is getting pretty nuts. That $16 netflix subscription is less than the cost of going to 2 movies a month... and that assumes that I don't take anyone (which is rare - I don't think I've ever actually gone to the theater by myself in my life). Theater prices are getting pretty insane... and I'd rather just wait for HD-DVD/BR/DVD releases and be able to pause the movie to go take a piss... make/take a phone call... grab a drink... etc...

He bought The Cheetah Girls 2 (that Disney movie?) last year and he didn't buy Transformers or Die Hard this year  Just saying maybe your tastes aren't mainstream and is not representative of most others :) I think there were/will be many solid titles for 2007 to showcase HDM

Ever received Christmas presents before? I didn't exactly choose everything on my list. Every year we receive about 8-10 DVDs. maybe my 2007 list will be longer after the holidays.

I did get Transformers but maybe forgot to add it to the list and I added Live Free or Die Hard over the weekend. I'll probably add Die Hard 1 soon -- not interested in the sequels -- except LFDH.

miata - what software do you use that calculates those numbers for you, and keeps track of all your titles?

I use DVDpedia for the Mac. As I mentioned above there are plenty of similar programs for Windows as well. Here is a screen shot of the statistics view.

Hey, Wuzup, do you go to the Premiere Theaters? The last one we went to was playing the latest Bourne movie. Whole film was completely out of focus (about 30 to 70% of Premiere films this summer were soft) and the staff refused to do anything. Three guys came in, looked at the screen from three feet away, and did nothing. Saw the PSU pres coming in for the next show; wonder what he thought. Wife got a headache.

Now, for what that movie experience cost, we have preordered the third Bourne movie in HD from Amazon!

We now only go to the Carmike Cinemas (digital projection) if the films we want to see are playing at the 6.

I saw the first film ever shown at the Carmike 5 in 1972!

Yer bud,
