View Full Version : building my crt pj mount
v1rtu0s1ty 11-22-07, 11:17 AM Here is an update folks. Bought the required parts yesterday at Home Depot. However, I need one more 10' strut. I decided to go with 3' that went to the joists and also built 3 of them to make it really strong. I also took the UP/DOWN swivel that came with the first dead sony 1272 projector I bought from craigslist. Hopefully, I can complete this weekend.
Anyways, here are few pics.

maybe you should take some more strut and anchor a piece from the side of the struts that are lag bolted into the joist. That way you can have a bolt that goes through the side of joist rather than just the lags as a safety measure.
I guess there have been crt projector horror stories here involving gravity.
v1rtu0s1ty 11-23-07, 11:06 PM I feel worried now after reading steveg's post. Please check out my new pics and tell me where I went wrong? Or am I fine? I actually stood on it and it looks stable. However, I'm only 140 lbs. How heavy are the sony 1272 projectors?
Anyways, here are the new pics. Once pj gets to the proper location, I will replace each long threaded rod with short rods. There will be 2 hex nuts and round/square washers on both sides of the strut so it won't move. Also, I will put 2 more rods at the middle. If you notice, the center strut is still unused. Also, I used 2 4" lag screws on each struts. I don't know if I should add another lag screw at the middle. Please let me know, I feel worried now.

EDIT: I think adding 2 more lag screws per strut would make it very solid. I will look for 6" or 8" lag screws tomorrow at HD.
the_avguy 11-24-07, 02:55 AM How are you going to replace the threaded rods once you get it up there?
v1rtu0s1ty 11-24-07, 09:22 AM How are you going to replace the threaded rods once you get it up there?
I will loosen one hex nut from one of the long threaded rod while the other 3 remaining are tight. Then once removed, I will put a shorter threaded rod like 8 inches. If you look at one of my images, one long thread isn't holding the projector. I think I have an image like that.
v1rtu0s1ty 11-24-07, 09:42 AM Sorry, the pic wasn't there from the earlier uploads. Here it is, the second pic.

PAPALEK 11-24-07, 10:00 AM Believe me, your mount is more than adequate. I have an Ampro 4600 that has been mounted in my room for two years now. It is held up by ONLY TWO 5/16x3" lag screws on the front mount and two no.10 screws on stabilizer rods in the back to keep it level. When I mounted it I also hung off from it my self. So just two lags can hold the 4600 AND me (190lbs) at the same time. Yours is not going anywhere.

Yeah, someone here told me that 2 lag screws is enough. He even mentioned that he hung himself and bouncing up and down and the mount didn't even complained at all. :D
The only drawback is that it will take a long time before I get the pj up there. Slow but safe.
Thanks for confirming! ;)
v1rtu0s1ty 11-25-07, 02:57 AM Here is update folks. I finally finished the mounting. She's now up there. I really like how it looks like but I'm not very happy with the hours I spent just to get her up there. Including the hours yesterday plus the hours today from floor to ceiling using threaded rod, I spent 12 to 14 hours. My back is so friggin soar, and so do with my biceps/triceps, and all the ceps. I'm really freakin' out now. :(
Anyways, someone posted a mount that looks like a pulley. I should have used that route instead. I remember, someone posted this mount pulley and on the background, there was a dog. Can someone please give me more info about this mount?
Now, I'm going to freak again once I bring her down.
jtnfoley 11-25-07, 07:08 AM I've got a mount with a boat winch... the winch is in the ceiling of my equipment closet, the cable runs thru the ceiling between the sheet rock and joists (the strapping was running the correct direction to pull this off) and I turn two corners to pivot the cable first up then down.
There's a post with pics somewhere.
I've also seen somebody use a permanently installed electric winch from Harbor Freight, if you've got the overhead clearance to support it.

Ok. Just got up. My whole body is so friggin in pain.
Hope you can find the link. Looks like I will have to give this projector away when I bring it down. Before I slept, I was thinking so hard about the mounting techniques. I should have waited and researched more about it. I never expected that it would be terrible to a point I want to shatter all my windows in the basement just to let out my anger. I don't want to spend another dime just for the mounting.
Anyways, here are the pics from last night.

Doug Baisey 11-25-07, 11:55 AM You get the 'not a girlie guy' award. Feel better now? :D
Actually this shows 'safe' thought and planning and with using the right hardware with the uni-strut. I'm sure your photos will help others. Doug
v1rtu0s1ty 11-25-07, 12:17 PM :D Thanks!
I wish I had seen this thread earlier. Here's a possibility for the future.
Depending on how strong you feel, obtain either a pulley:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/Tony1M/pulley.jpg
or a small block and tackle:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/Tony1M/hoist.jpg
Put a spring nut in the center of the center unistrut. Then, on a threaded 3/8" hook, install a hex nut and a large square washer. Screw the hook as deeply as possible into the spring nut and lock by turning the hex nut up against the square washer and edge of strut.
Snugly install either a lifting sling or rope around the black projector mount. (Alternatively, you can install a permanent eye-bolt, or hook, on the mount.)
Install the pulley onto the hook and run a rope over the pulley and attach it to the sling on the mount. (If the block and tackle are used, extend one of the pulley assemblies down to the sling and attach it there.)
Here's a rough idea of the lifting set-up:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/Tony1M/hoist2.jpg
(If you intend to use a suspended ceiling, you can attach the hook and pulley up a bit on the side of the center joist, so that you can pull the pj a bit higher, if necessary. Of course this way the pj will be a bit off-center, but, as far as I can tell, you are able to move the pj from side to side by sliding on the spring nuts.)
Then you just hoist the projector into position and attach it to the unistrut. Using the pulley, one or two people should be able to hoist the pj and then anchor the rope.
The block and tackle should make the job a breeze, even for one person.
Fellenz 11-25-07, 01:55 PM I've done the block and tackle and would only reccomend it if you (PLAN AHEAD) or have a second person to help you. You don't want to be in the position where you get the projector up and then have nothing to tie the rope onto
Sonynut 11-25-07, 02:20 PM Too late now.. but 4 ratchet straps attached to the joists and the PJ handles worked great for me--- had the PJ hanging on its mount all by myself in a whole whopping 10 minutes....
v1rtu0s1ty 11-25-07, 02:24 PM Thanks guys! However, can you help me please? How do these block look like?

:( well, next time I can use that. I have 4 of them here as well. I bought it at Costco. I'm assuming I can put that around the strut attached to my black swivel correct?
...........................How do these block look like?
:o No offense intended, but I really don't know what you are asking. Would you please be more specific?

The blocks are everything except the ropes and hooks
v1rtu0s1ty 11-26-07, 12:27 AM Cool pics! Now I understand it really better. :D
By the way guys, I'm a bit worried when I move the projector few more inches away from screen. I have a feeling that the spring nut will turn while I pull it. Is there any technique for it?
Thanks!
v1rtu0s1ty 11-26-07, 06:59 PM Hi folks, I need to add another non-load bearing support at the back of the projector so I can prevent it from bouncing up & down. Just close to the 2 holes, it says there that I should use metric. Info is M8x30 which I think means 8mm diameter and 30mm long. Does HD sell threaded rods that are 8mm in diameter?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again! :)

hi Sonynut. I'm trying to picture this out but I'm having a hard time visualizing how I would connect the strap to the joist. Can I use this solution to bring down the pj from ceiling to floor? If you can make a simple drawing, that would be awesome!
Thanks.
