View Full Version : No Video, but no RROD. Help.
120inna55 11-23-07, 08:21 AM This morning, all the colors in the dashboard suddenly smeared like someone dumped water on a watercolor painting.
I turned off the unit for a while and turned it back on. There was no image at all (my TV calls it "unsupported mode"). I was using VGA, so I switched to component, rebooted, and same thing---no picture. (The TV is working fine with all other components).
The audio still works. I can hear the usual boot-up tones and the swooshes by navigating the blades. I expected to see the red ring of death, but the console is behaving as usual, just no image. Is this a precursor to RROD?
I'm still under warranty. So I'll be calling 1-800-4 MY XBOX when they open. How long should I expect to wait to have my console repaired and returned to me?

Is this a precursor to RROD?My first instinct was to ask whether you'd flipped the TV/HDTV switch on the 360's video adapter, but you mentioned the problem was happening on VGA as well, so it makes me wonder if the video output port is going kaput.
On the component out, check the HDTV/TV switch ... and if that doesn't work, see if you're getting video through ugly old composite (the yellow cable). This at least will give you a head start when tech support makes you go through all these steps.

I got nothing via composite either (yes I positioned the HDTV/TV switch correctly for component and composite).
Now that we've ruled out cables and the TV as the culprit...
After many reboots, I temporarily got the following images via component (can't get anything to show up via VGA).
Has anyone else seen this? Is this a precursor to RROD?

Here's a shot from the HD DVD add-on drive.

Mike LS 11-23-07, 10:46 AM Something fouled up in the video portion for sure.
Regardless of what it is, get the repair/replacement process started now. Expect to be without your console for about 4 weeks.
120inna55 11-23-07, 10:56 AM Oooh, that's beautiful.
Tell me about it. It'd probably look pretty cool if I was the LSD type.
Maybe try running something else into those two inputs on your TV, just to rule it out as the culprit...

I Connected a DVD player to the component input that was yielding no image from the console --> DVD player worked fine on this input. (rules out bad component jack on TV as culprit)
Connected console via composite (yes I ensured TV/HDTV switch on cable was in correct position) and still got no image from the console.
I don't have a way to easily check the VGA input, but that'd be useless at this point.
I called MS and the empty box is on its way...
...guess I can expect to be without the console for at least a month.
What are you complaining for? You got your new theme for free. ;)
ultracat 11-23-07, 01:33 PM Haven't seen this in a while, but it is also a known problem (experienced on a smaller scale than RROD). MS warranty should cover it like RROD. At least they did under the original warranty before it was extended. It's the video board / output connection that's died on you. For most people this will also eventually lead to RROD. So, if MS won't cover it under warranty just buy another and keep this one running. It'll eventually RROD.
Yup. Happened to my launch console. Done the same exact thing accept mine was green tint. Rebooted blank screen but got sound. And no RROD. Its gone man. Send it to MS.
mikesketball 11-23-07, 02:22 PM Yep. Call MS they should cover it. It's pretty much the same thing as RRoD...you are just not getting the red lights. The GPU is lifting off the connections...just not enough to go all the way to RoD.
120inna55 11-23-07, 02:24 PM Oh, I knew it was gone. No doubt about that.
I'm just glad it's a known issue, so MS knows what to do to fix it. They told me not to include the HDD when the empty box arrives.
ultracat 11-24-07, 01:01 AM Yeah, keep your hard drive, controllers, cables, power supply, etc. Just strip the console of anything attached to it and send that back.
leftkidney 11-24-07, 02:38 AM mine did this a while ago but the sound went all wierd like as well and sounded like it was under water
strange since the screen looks like that as well
it was a launch console and was replaced under warranty
mrstanlala2 11-24-07, 07:12 AM Yeah mine did the same thing.. However it was still under a gamestop extended warranty...I contacted them on the phone and explained the problem..The manager didn't believe me.. Said it must be bad cables.. When I told her I knew it wasn't bad cable because I switched out the bad Xbox360 with my son's Xbox360 on the same cables everything work fine.. she still didn't believe me stating that she never heard of a system not showing a picture without displaying the RROD... and instructed me to bring it into the store so she could "troubleshoot" it.. Like she was going to mysteriously get it to show a picture by "trouble shooting it". Once I brought it into the store and her trouble shooting did nothing, she finally replaced it with a new system..saying "I never seen that happen before".. I told her well now you have, so maybe you'll believe the next costumer that has this problem...
