View Full Version : Subsonic Human Voice in "Amazing Grace" - simply INCREDIBLE!
jmcomp124 11-23-07, 05:49 PM It's been a while since I did some serious music listening (been mostly movies) and this morning I wanted to listen to Acapella and my all time favorite group for this genre of music is "Rescue". I was browsing through Rhapsody and was delighted to find an album by Rescue www.rescuemusic.com, that I hadn't listened to before. Casually I skimmed through the various tracks and clicked on "amazing grace". Usually I have the subs turned off for music as I mostly listen to pure 2 ch stereo with no subs and using a tube based pre-amp, but this time, the big boys were fired up with the CE-4000s. Instantly I recognized something different about this voice. I turned up the music a little bit more and when the part where "I once was blind but now I see", came; at "blind", literally the walls were shaking. I thought it was synthesized but the sound was too good for that, so I googled this new guy in rescue and his name is "Tim Storms". There it was...
Tim could do 8Hz!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Storms) and it was a Guinness world record. I don't know how low he went in amazing grace, but there sure were some subsonics as the huge LMS-5400 driver and PRs were getting some good workout
I immedietly searched for the DVD on Netflix and Blockbuster, but neither seemed to have it. So I called a local Christian supply who had a copy and I rushed and bought one.
Some of the tracks sound to me like the most beautiful combination of human voices "Shine on Us" and to simply put it, it is heavenly. The amazing grace track on the DVD sounded less potent than the Rhapsody track though but still very very good.
I now have a new favorite demo track :D. Seriously this bass of the human voice is very different from all the synthesized ones I have heard before. Very different from a pipe organ too.
Check it out and enjoy! There are some more fun tracks on the DVD (example "Aliens") that you will enjoy. The youtube video quality is very poor, so avoid it. If you have Rhapsody or itunes, check it out and report back on what you think and how it sounds in your system.
Enjoy,
-Jai

Rescue performed at my church about 4 or 5 years ago, and they were incredible. I talked with Tim Storms and he was a really cool guy. But anyway, he sang amazing grace in that performance, and yes, the entire auditorium was pressurized and practically shaking. It was unreal. Anyway, just saw the post and thought I'd comment. I wish I could find more albums with him in them! What was the DVD called that you purchased? I want to purchase it, but I haven't found any DVD's with him on them. Thanks!
Stephen
By vibrating his vocal cords at 8 Hz, Storms set a Guinness World Record for the lowest note produced by a human.
Hmm, I made some notes lower than that after Thanksgiving dinner last night.

lefthandluke 11-23-07, 10:26 PM jai,
this sounds like a good argument to use your subs for ALL music...

Maybe. I don't have my external active Xovers anymore. But sometime in the future, I will try to blend these in to the mains for music too. It is not there yet. I fire up the subs when I listen to pipe organ music or these amazing vocals.
I listened to rescue a few years ago in our church before Tim came along and they were absolutely beautiful. Man, if I knew I would have attended the concert at Gresham, OR (in 2004) when Tim was there. Their website
http://www.rescuemusic.com/ does not show Tim anymore in their Bios tab?
Is he no longer in their group? Anyone know?
In the special features section in the DVD, they did indicate that Tim has his own ministry. Maybe he is doing something on his own?
I would love to hear more of his recordings.
saginawjuggalo 11-23-07, 10:48 PM This dude has a AMAZING voice.. I googled his music... It's almost funny to listen to but 8Hz, WOW, Crazy! His voice shacks the hell out of my house!

Stephen,
It is called "Rescue Reunion Live". It is recorded in 4-ch (I think) because my pre-pro showed 4-ch Thx Ultra-2. Apparently it post-processed 4-ch to Thx Ultra-2 for 7.1.
My local Christian Supply had only 2 copies left and I grabbed one :).
Trust me, all the other songs in that DVD are also great. Some of the tunes made me tremble in awe. Absolutely fantastic music for the mind and soul and it is inspired by not something ordinary. Tim's interview reveals some of it.
jmcomp124 11-23-07, 10:57 PM Maybe we should go to Krispy Kreme more often to get a deeper voice. This guy has a weakeness for those donuts. He does change into an animal in one of those behind the scenes videos :D.
I still cannot believe a human can hit 8 Hz. It simply defies the laws of physics. It takes a pipe organ so incredibly large to hit those notes. I dont understand and I am confused.... unless it is some supernatural gift as he claims and I think I buy it because of my own personal beliefs.

Yeah, I have Rescue's album "The Difference" (their best, IMO), and I really love Rescue - for the music, the vocals, and the message. When they performed live at my church, I was completely blown away! I like most of their songs...Tim's deep bass really adds a richness to the group.
Anyway, about the DVD, does it have an LFE track? Since you said it's 4 channel, I'm guessing it doesn't. Just curious if the bass on the recording is accurate, deep, and powerful (it sure was live!!!). Can't wait to pick that disc up. Thanks so much for the heads up. I've never forgotten that performance, and I've wondered if they had any concert recordings :).

Tim has since moved on from Rescue. I'm not sure what he's doing now, but he isn't with them anymore. In fact, I don't know if Rescue is still around - I would hope so, though. Their ministry was powerful and moving, and their music was unbelievable.

So the opening bass sequence in "Before the throne" at http://www.rescuemusic.com/index2.html is not Tim after all?
The words and melody still digs so deep, I have listened to it more than 10s of times today and still not getting tired of it and feels like it has a healing effect. After all, this music is just more than just Tim. It is sad he is no longer with them.
