Any idea if this thing will carry surround sound over HDMI or just stereo?

I just purchased this guy too ...

Unfortunately my HDMI cables do not come until Wednesday (Newegg - $23 (includes shipping) for three (7ft in length) - that is just under $8 each - great deal in my books!).

I will try the component out when I get home though. I have heard that it does not process DTS, only Dolby surround sound.

It does have a component out for audio, but what ends up coming over HDMI don't know yet ...

I am not all that A/V savvy but from what I understand DTS is an alternative to the 5.1 Dolby Surround? I think I would be just fine with 5.1. I'm hoping the HDMI will carry through 5.1 :) Can't beat the price, worst comes to worst I can always return it. This should go well with my new 32" Olevia HDTV.

I picked one of these up yesterday, it in fact does carry audio through HDMI, although as far as picture quality, I can't make an accurate judgement because I've never had an upconvert player before. I CAN say that it has a better picture, although marginally on some dvds and then substantially on others, than my Harman/Kardon DVD22 hooked up through component.

Can you tell if the audio that goes through HDMI is 5.1?

yes, I am getting 5.1 through the HDMI with it. Although, for how much more the next model up does than this one, for 10-20 bucks more, I think it might well be worth it to take a step up.

Cool, I was mostly worried about the 5.1. This should be sufficient for my basic HD setup. For 30 bucks, I can throw this thing away in a year if I wanted something new.

Can somebody open one up and look for the video processing chip(s)? Mediatek, Zoran, maybe something different.

Should I be able to get digital audio out of the digital coax port on this if I am using the HDMI? Not sure if I have a bad player, bad cable, or an HDMI issue.

I would think so, you probably have to disable the HDMI sound though.

That's odd, obviously it's supposed to work since it has that output.

Alright, so I have this player and I am trying to watch it on a regular tube TV. I used to have it hooked up via HDMI, but I don't anymore. Nor do I have an HDTV anywhere near me so I can reset it back.

Is there anyway I can reset it so it will work via composite cables?

Thanks.

I suspect it's similar to this one from Sams Club:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=845008&highlight=Magnavox which uses Panasonic chipset and scaler similar to Panny 53S

Did you try setting Digital Audio to "on" and to "bitstream" instead of "PCM"?

Now if you're TV has a native resolution of 720P this will be fine right?

No player will upconvert using component. You need HDMI to upconvert.

Why is this? Is it a technical reason or a legal reason?
