We have had a 60 gb ps3 connected to our wireless network for about a year. Now the Uncle is buying our two kids PSP's for Christmas. I'm looking for advice on necessary accessories, games, tips , etc (or good sites to start reading) since I'm not that familar with them.

Also, is it possible to play the games we have already downloaded on the ps3 also on the psp's?

Thanks!

With the 60GB PS3, the two can play head-to-head PSP via its Wi-Fi or Ad-hoc. You can play PS1 downloaded games on both the PS3 and PSPs by transferring them via USB (up to 5 I believe) once the PSP are registered to the PS3.
With PSPs connected wirelessly to the internet you can browse the web and download demos, videos and more which is pretty cool during downtime between games. Remote Play with the PS3 now allows the PSP to turn the PS3 on and off and browse videos, music, etc. via local remote or anywhere via the internet which is pretty cool (start downloading a demo from the PSN Store just before leaving work, etc.)
The new slim-line PSPs can be connected to a TV via a special component cable. PS1 games don't fill the screen but most others look pretty good. More an option than a must have though.
Google "PSP" for many, many PSP dedicated websites.

There's much more things you can get and do that I'm sure others will chime in with.

Can you run the PS3 with the PSP? I.e. if I have an SACD in the PS3 and don't want to turn my projector to navigate the menus, can the PSP act like a remote and allow my to start the SACD?

Yes. This remote play business allows you to take control of your PS3. Period.

Yes, but not the way you want. The sound will come out of your psp and not the receiver hooked to the ps3. It works for me if I want audio somewhere else in the house, I can remote play to the ps3 and get access to all of my audio.

I don't know if there's any way to do what you want other than turning auto play disc on and just inserting the disc you want and blind-navigating with a controller.

Yeah, after posting that (keep in mind, I bought my PSP yesterday), I realized that remote play really doesn't do much at all. I can't see the Blu-Ray disc that's in the PS3, I can't play any of the games, I guess it's just for the DLNA streaming media stuff. I need to hook up my external USB drive to my PC and have the Windows Media Player recognize the media. Then, I'll have access to it from the PS3 and, ultimately, on the PSP.

Also, I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. Can I use that to convert my digital videos over to a PSP compatible format? I suppose wmv's are good? I know Mpeg-4's are supported. Do they need to be a specific resolution/codec to work?

Also, I have a huge library of DVDs that I'd like to put on my server. What's the best tool to do this so I can have access to them via the PS3 over the network? Obviously the files on the DVDs are .vob. What do I do next?

I know these questions seem very elementary, but I've always depended on the physical media and I'm just now venturing into this networked video. In fact, I've always hated mp3 players because of mp3 compression and I really don't need another device to carry around with me all the time. How do you people have enough room to carry this stuff around? I have a laptop, cell phone, car keys, sun glasses, PSP now, etc. One almost needs a utility belt, or a 1980's-style fanny pack to carry all this stuff around.

If you can play a video or audio file on your ps3, you can play it on the psp through remote play. At least every single file I've tried has worked. I think the reason they don't allow BD or DVD playback on psp is so you are forced to buy it on UMD. This is the real crippler of the PSP imo, UMD movies are worthless. You can only play them on the PSP, so no way I'm going to buy anything on UMD. I'd rather buy on DVD and just rip it to a memory card to play on the PSP and keep the ability to play it on my home theater system without also having to buy cables to hook my PSP into it.

I had contemplated buying a couple of cheap 500gb HD's and ripping all of my DVD's to my computer so I could then watch them on the ps3 (and psp), but the amount of work required isn't worth the convenience to me, tbh...

OK guys, I have a tough one for you.

I just went to McDonald's and attempted to get on their WiFi with absolutely NO luck.

How do I access WiFi hotspots using the PSP? I see an option for WiFi hot spots, but that's just for T-Mobile and I don't want to pay for that. I already have access to McDonald's Wifi because I'm an at&t DSL subscriber, but no matter which settings I use, I can't get an IP address.

I am doing Infrastructure mode, and telling the PSP to display a web page (so I can enter my login info on the McDonald's WiFi home page), but I cannot get connected so I never see the home page. I know I have access to their WiFi as I've done it several times with my laptop.

Anybody have a good resource with instructions for getting on WiFi hotspots with this PSP? If not, it's kinda useless.

On another note, I just bought Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. I think I'm going to enjoy the game (I have been enjoying R&C for the PS3). Can anybody really recommend some good cheap games out there. Other than this title (and maybe GoW in March), I think I'm going to either buy used or heavily discounted games only. I can't justify spending $40 on games for a portable gaming machine.

I am also curious about the wifi..I purchased my son a PSP, he is not getting it until christmas, I told my wife I should go ahead and open it up to make sure the games work:D she didnt bite on that. I dont have wifi at home and have no intention on getting it, I run a wired router for my pc and game consoles...so how exactly does the wifi work?

How long does the battery last, I know it has a built in battery pack and comes with a charger, do you need the car charger for long trips?

What accesories would you guys reccomend to purchase for an enjoyable psp experiance?

My PSP works fine at Panera (free wireless), however the problem with McDonald's login page may be that whoever set up the web page did not include support for other browsers or used a non-supported plugin. I had a similar problem at O'hare airport with my PSP, it needed a plugin that wouldn't run on it, so no way to access the wifi there.

You can fault either Sony's browser or the IT guys at McDonalds....

If you have a PS3 with wireless, you can connect the PSP to the net through the ps3...

the few umds i have were used and only a couple of bucks. the new slim psp includes a/v outs so you can hook it up to a tv. i read somewhere that it's close to dvd quality and may be more of a reason to buy umd movies. i'm seriously considering trading in my old one for a slim, if i can do it w/out my wife knowing. shhhh! here she comes!!

Today, I bought a screen guard (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7064874&st=PSP&lp=8&type=product&cp=2&id=1108125529524). I've already taken the time to put it on and it's hardly noticable, but if it keeps my screen from scratching, it will be worth the $5.50 I paid for it.

I also got this RDS Industries Carrying Case (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8022203&st=PSP&lp=19&type=product&cp=3&id=1157067061506). I like it, but after I opened the package and put my PSP Slim in there, I realized it doesn't have a place for the charger and power cable. :( That's my only complaint with the case, but I suppose that's okay. After all, it's supposed to be a "portable" device.

I think T-Mobile gives psp owners free wifi for 6 months. Goto Starbucks w/ your psp find the T-Mobile hotspot and click promotional access when setting it up. No personal information needed.

Thanks for the heads up, the screen guard sounds like a great idea...and there are so many case's to choose from its hard to decide on which one? I would like to get one that will hold the charger and some games/movies

I have found the Logictech case to be the best. There a lots of times my PS3 has been better off in a hard case. I also find it easier to hold in the case. (Which is why the slim is not a big deal to me.)
