View Full Version : Optimum screen size for a 9500
Lance S 11-24-07, 09:37 AM The room is light controlled. It's 16 ft. deep and 20 ft. wide. I will be sitting approximately 13 to 14 ft. from the screen. The screen will be DW and the PJ will be a 9500 / Ultra.
I know alot of the purest suggest no more than 9 feet. I also know there are quite a few guys running larger screens. My original plan was to run 110 to 120" but maybe I should stick to around 100?
Light and picture quality (focus, brightness, contrast, etc.) are my main concerns. If there is a visual difference between 100 and 120" I will most likely go smaller. The reality is that 100" is still an amazing screen and double the size of my current LCD:)
Thanks for the help.

Tim in Phoenix 11-24-07, 11:49 AM Hello
I have not used DW and do not know the gain characteristic for it, but users have fired 9500s at 100" screen widths of ST130 and found it not punchy enough. My instinct is 90" width max.
Lance S 11-24-07, 11:57 AM Tim,
Thanks, The DW is 1.24 gain if that helps at all. 90" width is max? I was hoping for alittle more but that is why I posted the question, I just wasn't sure.
Thanks for your input!

v1rtu0s1ty 11-24-07, 12:09 PM I have an entry level projector and I have driven it with 2.4 movie at 120". It's not sharp but not also washed out so much. Quality is still amazing. I think, it's a little dimmer. Fortunately, I have gamma control on my video card. And also, this isn't DW yet. I have tried an 8"x10" DW and white is better than on my boc. I have a screenshot on the Screenshot War. I was standing beside JLO. That's 10' wide although cut on top due to wrong screen I made. :D
If you want picture quality, go lower. If you want to be a part of the movie, go wider. :D
deronmoped 11-24-07, 12:30 PM Put the PJ on a table and try it out. You may be happy with the size image you want. With it being on a table you can easily move it to see the difference for yourself.
If it's a HD image, it should be plenty sharp at the larger size screen. It's going to look a little on the dim side going from a LCD to the larger screen size with your PJ. You could get a high gain screen, but that has different issues.
I'm running a similar PJ on a 140" wide 2.8 gain screen. I watch SD material at 17'. I'm real happy with how sharp it is, the brightness is very good in my black velvet theater.
It's a balancing act, you are trading one thing for the other. Smaller image= sharper and brighter. Bigger image= more engaging and wow.

Lenses could be an issue, some have reported poor edge focus with HD10Ls above a certain width, 96" was it?
Ericglo 11-24-07, 04:48 PM What Deron said. You have to decide what ft/lmbrts you prefer. Some like eye searing bright and others can live with less than night light lumens. Personally I prefer the smaller brighter image. If you want to go big and keep the brightness, then I suggest a Torus.
Fellenz 11-24-07, 07:51 PM Go with what looks right to you.
I run a 96" wide screen and would never go any smaller.
Lance S 11-25-07, 01:22 PM Thanks guys,
It's good advice. Once I have made my PJ purchase I will set it up on a table and throw it up against a sheet of DW. I can move it around a bit and see what I think is best. My goal was to have at least 100" diag. screen but we will see.
Deron,
Wow, 140", that's a monster. I am sure the high gain of your screen helps out with the size. I was going to stick with the DW for the cost, at least to begin with. The good news is I can always bump up the screen and gain at a later date.
I'll just have to do some trial and error to see what fits best.
Thanks,
Lance

Going with a smaller screen size makes things less critical. The bigger you go the harder you have to work at it and you usually have to spend more too. A high gain screen or a G90 will get you plenty of brightness, but those cost $$$. It's smart to start off with a smaller screen. After you have more feel for what you want and what it takes to get there, then you can either stay with what you have or go for something else.
Deron.
Lance S 11-26-07, 12:35 AM Deron,
Thanks for the reply. When you say "small" you mean around 90" like Tim suggested earlier right? I wouldn't want to go any smaller than that but the good news is I can take your advice and always go bigger down the road.
DW is cheap so I guess I could start out with around a 90" screen and go up from there as I become more comfortable with calibration.
Sounds like good advice, thanks.
