Hi all...
A quick question and a problem on a new PS3 40g.
I have the HDMI(to DVI) connected to my Samsung DLP and the Toslink connected to my old 5.1 Sony receiver. When I'm in the XMB I get a sound lag on the key click. When I play a BD the sound cuts in and out, but when I play an SD DVD the sound is fine. I can change the BD/DVD Optical setting to L PCM and the track on BD plays fine, but that still doesn't solve the XMB issues I'm having.
So my question is what should my settings be in menu?
Shouldn't the PS3 send the 5.1 core via bitstream from the new lossless codecs? Is it possible my receiver is too old?
Any suggestions as Sony's Tech Support is useless?
Thanks in advance.

You want bitsteam output with the old Toslink connection. With LPCM you are only getting 2 channels.
You'll have to check the specs on your receiver to see what it supports. I have an old Sony 50ES and don't have any problems.

It's a 6.1 AVR with DD and DTS and is only aprox. 5 years old. I have no problems with this particular optical input with other components in my setup such as an HD DVR, Xbox 360 and an upconverting DVD player.

Yes.. it should be set to Bitstream. What input do you have assigned for the optical connection..ie tape, cd, sat, etc. on your avr? Maybe if you change that, your problem might go away? I have my optical connection set up to go thru the MD/CD-R input on my AVR.

If I had to take a guess, your receiver might be having a problems with the higher bitrate of Blu-ray/XMB audio. (DVDs use 448kbps for DD, and 768k for DTS, while Blu-ray and PS3 games use 640kbps and 1.5mbps for DD and DTS respectively.)

This is what I'm afraid of.
I just don't want to go drop another 5 hundy on a new avr.:(

Definitely could be the higher rates. There are some Blu-Rays that don't use the higher rates and stick to 448kbps, try one of those to see what happens. Don't know one off the top of my head (although I think Casino Royal is one of them) but take a look in the Blu-Ray Software forum and you should find the info.
"just don't want to go drop another 5 hundy on a new avr."... You can spend more if you like.

Yeah I know...
Thats the cheapest I've found with HDMI 1.3 (Onkyo 605 for $461 delivered).
