Does MP4 work in Media Center 360? Or just in the dashboard?

at the moment just in dashboard, but lets hope it will work in next update

Just the dashboard is useless for me. My girl is used to XBMC, so MCE360 is an easy transition. Dashboard is too complicated.

Anyone know if a USB 2.0 external drive is fast enough to stream HD movies directly to the 360.

If my network connection is, it should be more than fast enough.

I'm confused here... Is this program supposed to create an .mp4 movie file from an .mkv?

I used GOTsent 23b6 and began converting an .mkv movie. All seemed to go extremely well. A movie file was being created in the output directory, but after the conversion everything was deleted automatically. There's no .mp4 anywhere.

Hmm... maybe it's because I'm using Vista. I'll give it a try on my XP machine.

There is a trade off, at least for now.

You can only result with a 2ch audio file.

Nox, try using the safe sync option, or make sure that AC3Filter is set up to output to a 2 ch audio file like Pro Logic II.

Right now, though, I tried it in XP. This time the files were not deleted automatically. But, instead of an .mp4, I was left with seperate .h264 and .wav files.

The process is extremely fast. It took about 10 minutes total (I'm comparing this to the 2+ hours it takes to convert an .mkv to .wmv with WMEncoder... which I've been doing now for several months with fantastic results). Once this program matures, it looks to be a fantastic alternative to get .mkv on the 360/PS3.

I had a similar problem, maybe even the exact same problem. I updated AC3Filter and then made sure it was set for Dolby Pro Logic II and now it works fine. Also SafeSync worked too.

I may still use Encode360 to keep the 5.1, but in a pinch if I want to watch something right away this is a great alternative. I hope they find a way to make 5.1 work.

Hmm, my output is getting deleted upon completion... what am I doing wrong? :P

update: Looks like it was just the source file that was the problem. I tried it with a different file and it worked fine.

I didn't have much luck with this program, but just remember that many mkv's don't play nice when converted to profile 4.1 for play on the 360 (like this program does). You may wind up with a file that doesn't play or has bad macroblocking. I found it very hit or miss. After much messing around, I've moved to using a laptop hooked up to the tv for mkv.

Yeah it works better with some files than others, but certainly worth a try before going the long road (ie Encode 360).

Now if there was only an easy way to get 5.1 integrated I would be all set. I know there are guides out there on how to use Nero to get 5.1 acc audio but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. :( (for the PS3)

I'm trying to play an MP4 file on my hdtv using my son's xbox 360. I saved the file to a thumb drive and burned it to a data CD. The dashboard recognizes the file both ways but when I try to play it I get a message that I need to download an update to allow the console to play an MP4 file. I try the download and first it tells me that it has already been downloaded and suggests I look for it. To do that I have to start the game it was downloaded for which I don't know and neither does my son. The it asks if I want to download it again. I do and the download starts but then stops soon and I get a message to "try again later, status code: 80070005". I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

I don't seem to have much luck without choosing the safe sync option.

It works ok on my 360, but how do I get my PS3 to recognize that there is a video file on the thumb drive? It is in the root directory of the thumb drive saved as an MP4 but the XMB tells me there are no files on the thumb drive.

This is amazing... I was using River past video cleaner which was taking 12 hours to convert 1 gb MKV files... this takes about 10 minutes. I am blown away. I wish there was a way to set up a queue of files

This program will not work properly for me. It throws up all sorts of error messages every time I start a convert. Shite program, Ill stick with PS3 Video 9, it may take longer but its literally plug and play.

Can someone make a program to remux to WMV or even XVID now? Come on people get on this!! :D

That's why I was using it for the PS3, not the 360. WMNicEnc is the only 360 encoder I use, it's the quickest and best one I've tried.

Well, this software can output 2.0 audio, for playback on the 360.

Thanks for the heads up, simen02. This works very well for me. Every mkv video that I've converted using this tool has played flawlessly on my 360. It really is "fast and easy".

I haven't seen any interviews with Xbox personnel where anyone asked them why all the limitations, so I'm still going with "We'd be encouraging piracy if we played everything so we won't" being the reason.

I don't think DLink loses any sleep over their streaming media hardware, or any other manufacturer who has no side business providing codecs to the people making DVDs, old style or HD. Microsoft IS unique there, I believe, and I don't expect that what appears to be a protectionist attitude will change anytime soon.

Lucky for me streaming videos were a bonus with my new game machine, and converting to WMV9 on my PC while I play games is not a hardship...

Im pretty new at this can someone tell me what to put in the output space?

I can convert my videos to MP4 fine, using GOTSent, but I cannot get MP4 playback in Media Center. I can play the videos just fine from my flashdrive, which is fine for TV shows, but for movies quite a bit larger than 2GB (the size of my flashdrive) playing them from the flashdrive isn't an option. When I connect the 360 to my Media Center PC I get the following error message:

"Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer"

Any idea what is wrong?

mp4 MUST use simple 2.0 aac
mp4 MUST be less than 4.0gb in filesize
also, some computers may need a registry patch to recognize the file types.


XenonMKV includes/does all this.... use the tools menu to patch your registry for mp4, and reboot.

edit, i see you said MCE, this only works in the dashboard with media player streaming, if i recall correctly.

You're the man, man. I Googled around forever yesterday trying to figure that out and no solutions came close to being correct. I don't mind using the streaming from the dashboard video library, my main concern was just being able to watch MP4s through something other than a flashdrive.
