View Full Version : Help Me Choose A Sub - Time sensitive Question
khanmotorsport 11-24-07, 06:07 PM Guys,
this is kind of a time sensitive question since futureshop has a sale ending tomorrow at noon on velodyne subs.
I need a subwoofer to fill my home theater with good strong base. home theater area is about 1700 cu ft and has no back wall because it is half of a 3000 cu ft room.
My choices so far are as follows:
1) Axiom EP500
2) One of the SVS middle range subs (not the ultras)
3) The Velodyne DLS-5000R
Out of all of them, i believe the axiom can go the lowest and produce 20hz and under frequencies at levels you can actually use.
The velodyne doesn't go to 20hz but gets close....but it is on sale for 25% off at futureshop.
What would I be missing if i didn't get a sub that goes below 20? Is the velodyne a good buy?
Any other subs i should have a listen to that arn't on that list?
Warpdrv 11-24-07, 06:15 PM The axiom is $1200... If you want to do it right the first time, and be done with it...
I would suggest you get 2 of the eD A5-350...

You should really take in to account the whole area of both spaces, and thats alot of area.. 2 of those, and you'll be in heaven... and not need to upgrade for a long long time
Now I see your in canada... not sure that eD is an option there... based on cost...
2 plus cylinder subs from SVS would be fantastic as well...
khanmotorsport 11-24-07, 06:19 PM not buying a sub out of the US...UPS will murder me in fees...thanks for the suggestion tho.
(note: axiom has a factory outlet program where you save 10%)
Warpdrv 11-24-07, 06:26 PM Those prices in canada really throw me off...
I'll leave it up to the people up nort by you to make suggestions... :O
khanmotorsport 11-24-07, 06:28 PM ^ yeah..importing stuff does tend to suck. i don't know why more companies don't use USPS...if they did i would be all over that.
i appreciate your input though, thanks for the reply
if you are talking about the SVS PLUS models ... I'd go for those. they have variable tuning too.
and I own both the Axiom and Velo
khanmotorsport 11-24-07, 06:50 PM I just got a reply from a friend who is pretty knowlegable about these things and he noted that humans cannot hear frequencies below 20hz. If that is the case, what is the point of lower frequencies than 20?
is it just some dick swinging competition between manufacturers?

You can feel frequencies under 20hz though and that's half the experience... the other half is seeing stuff in your viewing area shake.
khanmotorsport 11-24-07, 07:01 PM ^ thanks for the info.
i thought of that myself too ... but I find that the sub 20hz frequencies are those that rock my couch.
When your couch, floors and walls are shaking you feel like you are there, not just watching.
At around $1-1.2k CND range, I would choose the EP500. SVS PB12+ second. I would take the Velo only to get the best price. It will provide significant >25Hz sound and there is a lot of room shaking to be had in that frequency as well.
If you want to hear/feel <25Hz stuff, take a trip to SonicBoom and demo some of the bigger SVS subs. Not sure where Dwight is, but if near by, go demo an EP500. At least you will know if sub-20 is something you would want to achieve.
After that, you may be able to convince yourself it would be worth waiting and saving more to get an EP600 or PB13 Ultra.
khanmotorsport 11-24-07, 10:32 PM if sub 20 gives u the feeling and room shaking effect, definitly something i want.
thanks guys, I will wait and get something that can go low.
how are you guys wiring up two subs? i think my onkyo only has one sub output. do the subs connect to each other and feed data between themselves?

You can get a Y adapter or Y cable for a few bucks, this will feed the signal to both subs from the same output.
Something like this would work

khanmotorsport 11-24-07, 11:02 PM wow hehe, sometimes after digging thru AVS forum and reading about all sorts of complicated solutions, you forget that sometimes the simplest answer is the best eh ;)
thanks.
dlfromcanada 11-25-07, 02:11 PM you can get SVS or HSU offerings cheaper and better than the velo

If you are going to save for earth shaking subs, you should consider the JL Fathom
Warpdrv 11-26-07, 03:53 PM If you are going to save for earth shaking subs, you should consider the JL Fathom
Thats just downright silly.... there are tons of other subs available that will shake the earth, without spending the kind of money they want for a sub...
Great sub, but hardly the only choice here...
khanmotorsport 11-26-07, 03:57 PM i've been reading up on JL's...and i will save that for later...i need a sub that will keep me happy for the next 2-3 years before i move up to some higher end gear.
i'm finishing up a degree in university and running a business on the side so i wont have "audiophile" cash flow (for lack of a better term :) ) for another year or so. I think the toss up at the moment is between the Axiom EP500 and SVS plus PB-12
PB-12 is damn stylish and both seemed to do pretty well on craigsub's master review thread. the axiom is a bit cheaper up here but i will talk 2 SVS and see if the local dealer has a demo model i can try out or somehting.
mojomike 11-26-07, 04:27 PM You are talking about two very capable subs here. Neither one should let you down. The SVS will give you more depth and you can vary the tuning to suit your preferences. Some say the Axiom may be better sounding with music. Either way, these are good subs.
