I am also new to subs / speakers and receivers but at least instead of buying a Home Theater in the box I have done some research I bought the pieces separately.

A basic Yamaha HTR-6030 :

2x Yamaha NS-555 :

and a basic Sub:

Good 16 gauge cables, Monster Banana plugs and a THX cable for the sub. ( I took extra care to hook up system with good quality cables and plugs )

I wish I had bought higher end stuff, but for my first Home Theater system this set seems like a good start. Right now I am struggling with my sub set-up. I am not sure how to adjust my sub with my receiver and where to place it.

My living rom is 11 x 16 and the Home Theater equipment is placed along the widest wall. Should I place the sub in the corner? or across the room from the TV? How do I adjust the sub through the receiver?

Thanx in advance.

Kim,
This is a very good article on 'Bass management'..................
Use your receiver manual for speaker settings and Xover. settings.

Good luck...
