Hello, I am new here. Been lurking for awhile, finally registered. I've been in the process of planning my new, modest home theatre setup. I've purchased an Olevia 37" 237T, as that will be replacing my old 20" standard television. Next to go is my DVD player, which is a Samsung that was purchased around 5 years ago.

During my research, I am more confused than ever about what I should buy! My TV has at least one HDMI port (it is being shipped so I cannot confirm whether or not my model has 1 or 2).

I basically want a good upconverting DVD player that is under $100, can connect via HDMI (my component cables will be connected to my cable co's HD STB), and can convert up to 720p/1080i as that is the max my new TV can handle.

Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Also, if I want to add a stereo system, would adding an HDMI switch allow me to plug in both the DVD player and stereo system?

Thanks so much!

If you get a sound system you should just use the digital audio outputs from the cable box and the dvd player to go directly to the system. then use component and HDMI into the TV from their respective sources. Basically no need to feed the TV sound if you're not going to use it for it. I'm in the same boat, it *think* just about any upconverting DVD should suit your needs. It looks like the cheaper players won't do DTS or Divx, if you care about that sort of thing.

I haven't tried it myself, but the Sylvania DVL1000F at $90 got a good review here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=133#SylvaniaDVL1000F%20(HDMI)
