Just got a Sony KDL-46S3000 LCD. I have read in some threads that HDTV's upconvert DVD source for you...I have a regular old DVD player now. Should I get an upconverting one such as the Sony DVP-NS77H? I'm trying to stay around $100 and am not interested in going to an HD DVD yet (unless they are around $100 which I don't think they are yet)

Thanks for the help!

I'm hoping someone will jump in here and answer this question because I am in the same boat. My television is a JVC LT-42E488 720p and I'm wondering about an upconverting DVD player also. Right now I have a Toshiba SD 3950 digital progressive scan DVD player hooked up. Don't want to spend the money if it is not going to make a difference.

Some HDTV's do a better job upconverting than DVD players.
If your HDTV has a HDMI input then I recommend buying an upconverting player, upconverting over component won't work.
I can't recommend any players for around $100US but most stores have a 30 day return policy if you aren't happy.

Upconverting players are not mandatory. All fixed-pixel displays will deinterlace and scale as necessary to their native resolution. This happens to all supported input signals, not just HDMI.

Newer players may give you a better image, but the differences are not night and day, but rather incremental improvements. If you are fanatical about your DVDs, this is the sort of thing you pursue. Else, save your money for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

I also just put in a 46S3000.

My DVD's don't look very good on it. I was very disappointed.

Would an up converting player solve this?

Also- as of now the dvd player is not hooked directly into tv
but runs into a Pioneer home theater receiver. The only line
running into the tv from the whole system is the single antenna
wire from satellite.

Thanks for the help if you can.

It would be helpful if you could try a direct connection from the DVD player to the display with a better method.

What output ports are available on the player and what inputs on the display?

The better methods are HDMI, DVI and component.

Then s-video, then composite. Coax antenna wire is last.

You can get HD video over HDMI and DVI (and sometimes component) but not over the others.

Maybe...A good upconvert player under $100 should make your DVDs look better at 720p/1080i using HDMI. "Ratatouille" DVD upconverted to 720p looks better than some broadcast HD movies on my 42" plasma. Get one of these cheap upconvert players (Sony, Panny) or HD-A2, return it if the PQ is no better.
