My zip code is 77058 and I want to buy an ant for indoor to pick up HD channels. Can someone help me with this. I plugged my zip code in to tvfool and it said I would be able to pick up the channels I want. (Nbc, ABc, CBS, Fox)
Can you give me a good suggestion? I have a frys, best buy, target, etc near me to pick one up at.
Thanks.
Rick
Please keep topic titles as specific as possible. You'll get help more quickly. See my edit.
That said, here's my rule of thumb: Start cheap and keep receipts. You may be surprised at what a five-dollar set of rabbit ears can do. Radio waves are radio waves. No need to spend more than you need.

thanks allot! Do you guys have a name brand I should get? Also what about the ones you plug into the wall? does that matter?
There are too many variables in play to tell you exactly what you need. At first glance, it appears you're 20 miles from most of the digital transmitters you'd be interested in. Depending on your house construction, elevation and what's around you, you might can get away with an amplified indoor antenna. At that distance, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't need to go to the rooftop to get a consistent signal. I'll leave it to others to recommend brands. Just remember, there is no such thing as an "HDTV antenna." Don't pay more than you need to.

I live in an apt so I can't dobghe roof ones. Is it better to put the ant by a window or above the tv? Also what do different ant do? For exampe why not just get a three dollar pair if bunny ears? What is the diff between that in a thirty dollar pair
Well, if you're upstairs on the same side of the building as the transmitters, your odds are better than if you're in the ground unit and there are six other units between you and the transmitters.
More expensive set-top antennas sometimes come with built-in signal amplifiers. As I said earlier, start cheap and keep receipts. Also remember that the "Sweet spot" for a signal may not be on top of the set. For me, I have to move the rabbit ears to a different location for each channel. And I'm only 10 miles from the transmitters. Hence the roof antenna.
Depending on where I've lived, I've been known to crawl into apartment attics to install a yagi.. hang a combo from a bedroom ceiling, put a yagi on a stand and stick it on the patio ..even jack into community antennas the landlord had long since abandoned. Where there's a will (and a signal) there's a way.

Antennaweb shows a large number of digital stations, almost all of them in the same direction at 23 to 25 miles away. Almost all the digital stations are currently on UHF with two exceptions: KPXB-DT Ion 49 on low VHF 5 and KUHT-DT PBS 8 on upper VHF 9. KPXB-DT 49 will be moving to UHF 32 in 2009. Two Houston stations, KHOU-DT CBS 11 and KTRK-DT ABC 13 will be moving from UHF to their VHF analog channels in February, 2009. So in the long run, you will need UHF and upper VHF coverage. The antennaweb results for your zip code and adding 200' height for the antenna to get a more complete list shows:

Reception at 24 miles is often iffy for tabletop indoor antennas, but the flat country you live in and the yellow color codes from antennaweb suggest that an indoor antenna is feasible. Lots of possible antennas that might work. You can start with a basic UHF loop and VHF rabbit ear antenna if you buy it locally. In general, the Terk antennas are not very good, although the HDTVa with the Silver Sensor UHF antenna is ok. For antenna basics, see http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ISSUES/erecting_antenna.html. If you need better performance, the Channel Master 4220 2 bay bowtie is a possibility if you hang in a window or on a balcony. But the CM 4220 won't get the Ion station on VHF 5 (Ion will be adding a HD subchannel in 1st quarter of 2008). Yes, putting the antenna in the window is better deep inside the apartment than on a TV, but you have to try it to see whether it works good enough near the TV or not.
