I recently changed out my Oppo 970 for an Oppo 980, my TV is a Samsung 6187 dlp. The problem I'm having is that the Oppo does not detect the HDMI interface. The users guide says to power on the TV and switch it to HDMI, then power on the Oppo. When I do this the Oppo does not detect the HDMI and seems to select the analog outputs. The HDMI light is on on the front of the Oppo and the correct output resolution is selected, but no signal goes through.

To correct the problem I have to manually cycle through the available HDMI resolutions. After pressing the HDMI button on the Oppo remote a couple of times, the first to take it out of hdmi mode I would guess, and the second to select the first hdmi resolution, I start to get a picture. I then must press the hdmi button a number of additional times to get to the resolution I want.

I queried Oppo on this and they think it is a hotswap problem between the TV and the player. Since the 970 HDMI interface was always active I did not see this problem. Oppo suggested that I toggle between another active interface on the TV and back to the HDMI interface and that should correct it, but it didn't change anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

Oppo service sent me the following:

"We will have our engineers look into this error with our test equipment and see if there is no way to resolve this through software."

Thank you Oppo.

As a follow-up.

As a result of not having a solution I have been using an s-video connection, not the best.

With the latest release of Oppo firmware the Auto HDMI feature is able to sync to the TV but at a very low resolution. I am however able to then switch the Oppo to a 1080p resolution via the setup menu and it syncs correctly with the TV.

However, I cannot leave the Oppo set at 1080p because when I repower it it cannot sync with the TV and the Samsung TV reports "Unsupported Mode". Any attempt to change the resolution fails until I configure the Oppo for Auto and repower.

I have e-mailed Oppo and they have responded that they will re-look at the problem given this new information.

In the mean time I have been able to program my Harmony remote to automatically enter the setup menu and switch to 1080p upon startup, and to
switch it back to Auto upon power off. This works most of the time but occasionally due to timing at power up it doesn't always work.

Hopefully this information will be helpful to someone else.
