Does the 40gb model play PS1 games? I know it is unable to play PS2 games so something I'm just wondering.

All PS3 models can play Playstation games to some extent. Some games have various issues, depending on which version firmware you have on the PS3. You can check Sony's compatibility list to see if your games will work. (link (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus))

There are no significant issues with any PlayStation One games that I'm aware of for any PS3 model. I could be wrong though. Edit: Never mind, I found some on that list.
