ok so i got the walmart deal over the weekend and so far the system is great (im having to rma a couple parts in my pc so its getting alot of play atm). however i do have a problem.
i have a westinghouse 37w1 and have been using it as my pc monitor for a while so i know its a full 1920x1080 but the ps3 will only do 1080i.
yes i know that not all the inputs on the tv are 1080p but im using the same dvi plug as i was with my pc
im using a RCA hdmi-dvi cable. u think i should grab a hdmi-dvi dongle and use the dvi cable from my pc?
cuz after a few hours last night the 1080i made my eyes hurt

The PS3 was outputting in 1080i for what? It outputs in the output resolution for whatever you are playing. Blurays will output in 1080p. Most games will output in 720p (some in 1080i). A few games will output in 1080p.

I kind of get what you are saying, but I have my Monitor hooked up as well and am getting 1080P on my screen.

Two things to consider.
1.) Is your graphics card on your PC compatible with an 1080p resolution?

2.) Did you change your display setting on your PS3 to allow 1080p singals?

See if those simple solutions work, if not then maybe its the connection

i disconnected my pc from this input due to having to RMA some parts and i think a 8800gtx can do 1920x1080 just fine
and when i select 1080p on the ps3 the screen goes all wonky kinda like on an old crt monitor when u select a refresh rate thats to high

Do a search here and in the LCD display thread for possible Westinghouse/PS3 HDMI handshake issues. Don't own a Westinghouse and can't remember the model numbers discussed previously but do remember reading threads about Wesitinghouse/PS3 issues here at the AVS forums.

If you search this forum and the display forum you should find more info about this, but this TV/Monitor is stuck with a few problems when using the PS3... I know from first hand experience :(

1080p will work from the DVI1 input, but it is a pain. You have to either switch inputs on the TV (eg - from DVI1-DVI2, then back to DVI1) or unplug and replug the HDMI cable from the PS3. This doesn't work everytime, but do it a few times in a row and shoulf eventually work. The extremely annoying part is when a movie has some content in a different resolution before the menu/main feature, as the TV usually 'looses sync' again during that time.

The other option is using the other DVI input. While not officially supporting 1080p, it should work. The issue here is that many people report seeing blue pixels throughout the picture at this resolution, myself included.

Sorry to bring bad news to ya :o
