View Full Version : Where should I put the extra cable?

I'm installing my low voltage lines and I'm finding that the pre-made cables I have are a little longer than I need (I've included 7' at the speaker end and 10' at the receiver end). Should I put the extra length of cable at the speaker end or at the receiver end?

Also, what should I do with the extra cable - should I coil it or run it along the wall and back? If I coil it, will there be any interference issues?

Thanks!

Dave

I know what you're thinking. Why don't you split the difference... Well, I'd rather coil one end versus two ends.

If anyone has an opinion, please let me know.

Thanks!

Really depends on your setup. For example, I am also pulling low voltage right now, and know that my speakers will be wall mounted very cleanly for a floating look. On the other hand, I'm unsure of exactly how my equipment rack/room will be configured - so I left very, very little slack on the speaker end, and hung loops in the rack room.

I tend towards wanting to keep extra at the receiver end, as that's where it tends to be needed if you know your fixed speaker locations, and it looks neater. On the other hand, if you plan on moving yours around a bit, you'll want more slack at the speakers.

Coiling low voltage loosely is fine; keep it away from line voltage. Stringing it out is inviting a closer call with a 110V run of something or another.
