I think that would depend on how much he wants to spend...

Client?????

Scary, a budget will be needed at minimum here. Screen size, Room dimensions, seating, screen type, room colors, ect..ect..ect... Will all come into play.

Your question as worded, brings home that you need to learn a lot still before going any further.

The other problem with this request is that "best" could be based on any number of projector performance areas. Each individual will have a different opinion on which of these factors are most important (my humble list:o)

Picture artifacts (screen door effect, rainbows, etc.)
Picture sharpness
Fan noise
Color uniformity
Color accuracy
Brightness
Contrast Ratio
Black Level
Dynamic Iris
Setup ergonomics
Menus / Features
Video scaling
Price

That's my list (in my own order of importance). Any problems with the first four items would cause the PJ to be removed from my list.

Anyone else will almost certainly have a different priority list. In addition, your own visual acuity and viewing environment will have a major impact on what is most important to you.

Regards,
Brian

The Sharp XVS55U

I still have one, it even has a like-new bulb in it. I'd be happy to sell it to you for a cool $250! :D

What's amazing is the damn thing has some features on it I'd love to have on my new PJs. :(

For the screen I'd consider to be optimal (measured in yards).

Take a real shorcut, go shop with a Custom Installer and listen to them. It might cost more (might because you could do-it-yourself and spend way more in mistakes or poor choices). if you choose the installer wisely, you'll be rewarded with a killer viewing experience. Budget the most you can spend and them let them spend it!

I had mine since 1997 or 1998 : ). I sold it this summer for $500 with a crappy Bose AM10 speaker setup. The best part was the bulb was from 1997 as well :eek: It was finally going out I think. Come to think of it I paid more for the Sharp in 1997 than I did for the RS1 if I remember right.

Or you could be stuck with a $20,000 setup with a 90" screen because the installer thought bigger screens were hard on your eyes. :p

$500!?!?! I still have my old Sharp down in the basement... I have PJs all around the house. Seeing your post last night got me curious enough to go spend a few minutes with the old dog. As bad as we remember these old PJs being, it really didn't look as bad as I thought it did, but it does need a good LCD cleaning. I seem to recall I paid close to $5k for mine as well (although I was thinking it was 1996), which would also be more than I paid for my RS1. My how times have changed over the last ten years.

My neighbor is still running his old Epson 720p pj from 4 plus years ago. 8) I think he paid $5k for that off of ebay, too. Its been through a few bulbs but it does keep on ticking.

As good as it looked 4 years ago, it looks very washed out in comparison to my Sharp 10k and Sharp 12k then already. Those older projectors (not the Sharps 10k/12k - the older Sharps and epsons for sure) certainly dont hold a candle to any of todays 1080p projectors anymore, regardless of type, make, or model, I think.

Best images if blacks are your thing and price is no object: In the very near future I would put money on it coming down to the Marantz 11S2, JVC HD100, possibly the BenQ 20000 (if it has dual iris, properly implemented UNISHAPE, DC4, HQV processing and a decent lens .. that is.)

If brightness is your thing and price is no object looks like HT5000, C3X1080, and some PD products are where that battle is going to be fought.
