The HV20 can be had right now for about $690 and is very tempting.
Although I'm slightly turned off by tapes.
The HG10 is about $1000 and I love the HDD storage, as well as the look and the feel much better.
Both have the 24p option.
Can anyone with either/or chime in with their opinions?

Depends upon whether you want the best video bang for the buck, if so, go with the HV20. The HDV format as implemented in the HV20 provides superior image quality compared to the higher compressed advanced codecs in HDD cameras, also as you pointed out it costs less.
Spend the extra cash on an HD-43W wide angle lens, a DM50 microphone and an extra battery or two...have fun.

I have the HV-20. It is compressed footage unless you live stream the video through the HDMI to a special video card on a computer. I love this camera. So many options, so little knowledge.
When you shoot 24p on the HG10, do you get an interlaced 60i AVCHD stream with 3:2 pulldown (i.e. using PAFF/BAFF extensions) or do you get a true 24 fps progressive AVCHD stream?
Or if someone would put up a short raw 24p .m2ts file from the HG10 for download, I'll be glad to inspect it and follow up here to answer my own question.

The implementation of 24p in the HG10 is the same as the HV20 and there are some users who are saying that the HV20 does a better job with 24p.
I hope I’m allowed to do this but here is a link that will give you a few 24p samples from this camcorder.
