Can anyone tell me what kind of hardware/software/camera I'd need in order to record video (not hd) direct to my PC's hard drive?

I'd really like quality to be on par to a decent camcorder (i.e. not a webcam) and I already have a TV tuner card that does video capture if that helps.

Thanks!

Dave

Something like this?

Serious Magic DV Rack

DV Rack 2.0 HD is direct-to-disk recording and monitoring software to help produce superior quality video from an HD camera.

It works with non-HD footage too!

Thanks for the link ... that looks about perfect ... a little more than I want to spend though, and I don't really need HD capabilities, but it's on the list for now. It looks like that would work with any kind of digital camera, which would be great as there seem to be a few choices at 250 or so.

Thanks again.

Do you know if adobe elements premier has any of those direct to pc features? That's much more in my price range.

I'm not sure how you are presently capturing to you computer, but there should be no difference between a firewire transfer and direct-to-HDD. Firewire is a straight transfer with no losses. In fact, with the present line of firewire-type cams you CAN capture in real time (but compressed) directly to the HDD.

If you had an HD cam then you could transfer uncompressed through HDMI and the BM intensity card... but that's another story.

If your cam doesn't have a firewire port, then you're pretty outdated and therefore pretty limited.

Freeware app WinDV and an IEEE 1394 cable between your camcorder and laptop work great.
