A friend wants to save some TV shows he has on his DVR by putting them on DVD.

Is this doable?

I would presume it would be much easier to use a free standing DVD recorder than to rig a computer with a DVD burner to do this.

I did a couple of forum searches but didn't find quite what I was looking for.

Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks!

Easily done, I do it all the time. You need a DVDR (DVD recorder,) which you will connect to your DVR with S-Vid and R/L audio cables. A DVDR with a HDD is the best for this, as it lets you edit out commercials cleanly and easily, and MANY other reasons. See the sticky thread at the top of this forum, about the Philips DVDR for lots of information. The only possible hitch is if the programs he wants to transfer are copy protected. I have Comcast cable, and none of mine are, even the premium channels. But, some services present a lot of copy protection problems.

I have Comcast, formerly Adelphia, and have experienced problems even though I have DVD-Ram capability. Adelphia must have been one with a lot of copy protection.

Might be the difference in your DVDR brands... some detect CP when it's not there?

Thanks, those are exactly some of the issues I anticipated.

I'll take a look at the Phillips thread.

EDIT: I just took a quick look at the Phillips thread, WOW! Lots of great information there and I will direct my friend to that. Might even think about doing it myself. :)

I have Comcast and with the original Pace base DVR, I had copyguard issues sometimes. Once I switched to the Motorola upgrade, those things went away.

I have Cox Cable over here in San Diego. I haven't got them over here yet to upgrade my service and give me the new DVR yet.

Still will need a DVD burner though.

What's the Moto upgrade?
