View Full Version : Need a little group reassurance- just ordered a PB Plus/2
I sold my SVS PC Ultra only to go shopping this weekend and find out how really bad the local selection really is.
So... with my previously mentioned sub gone and nothing worth buying in the stores, I went back to see what SVS had. The price on the premium finish PB Plus/2 went down to $1099, so I didn't see how I could lose.
Then, after ordering, (and with a little help from another member), I'm getting cold feet about the sound quality. Any other input?
Also, what's the cost to ship back the Piano black behemoth if I don't like it?
I have one and think at the price they are going for they are an excellent value. Mine is in a smaller room and when a bass drum hits it can make your pants flap around on your skin. I have not heard the new ultra but would guess you would have to hear them side by side to notice the difference. Good luck with your choice I dont think you can go wrong.
I had one and they are pretty good. But, I also had the old Ultra/2 and it was better. The new Ultra is in another league. If you can swing it I would get the Ultra and get better SQ and at least the same output with more tuning flexibility.
Sherardp 11-26-07, 10:40 PM Im limited on supplies out here in Japan but I have two of the Plus/2s and they rock the house. Watched Kill Bill last night and the bass was nice and tight, no boominess for me. Im running both of mine off a Velodyne SMS-1.

Good... the tight base is what someone indicated I might be giving up with going to these speakers.
allredp 11-26-07, 11:14 PM I've got the +/2 also and love it!
I think the key in my setup is crossing it lower--I've got some capable mains (Dahlquist QX10s rated down to 30hz with two long excursion 6.5 bass drivers), so I cross the SVS at 60hz and it really rocks. When I had it at 90hz it struggled with really tight upper bass--it was a bit flabby. Now that I've x'd at 60hz I've got tons of mid-bass slam to go with my room pressurizing LFE. I'm really thrilled with the difference that x-over point change has made. YMMV...
I've recently experienced The Fathom (JLAudio F113) and 2 SVS +/2 ultras at different homes and my single +/2 really keeps up on almost every thing I throw at it. The only exception, at least before I changed my x-over, was Flight of the Phoenix--the sand storm. On that scene the dual Ultra +/2s were just frightening in their ability to flap the pant lets and shirt sleeves! However, my single +/2 really produces the super-low shudders in WOTW without distress!!!
My room is 27' x 15' x 8' and it really puts the smiles on my visitors! I think you'll be very happy--Ed Mullen calls the +/2 a "sledge hammer" and I agree with him!
Don't forget you're getting the 3 band parametric eq with that nice finish also!
armystud0911 11-27-07, 03:11 AM Just trying to understand you here, you sold the PC Ultra in the offchance that you would find something locally thats better? Without looking around first? What did you think you were going to find? a JL F113 for a similar price? If you've been watching this forum over the past few months, you must have noticed the incredible boom of ID subs, SVS and HSU are no longer the most talked about around here. I am not trying to come down on you here, something just isn't making sense.

Well, not that I find it necessary to make sense to you, but I guess I wouldn't rank that as the most logical thing I've done in a while, but... actually I had not done a lot of reading in the audio section lately. I was more concerned with video, getting the right plasma, etc..
Then, my dad mentioned that he would like a HT system. I was really excited for him and I let the PC Ultra go toward his HT system (I'm still glad with what we worked out on it and I'm happy that after moving it to his house and playing it, he now understands why the Acoustimass sub that he had just wasn't cutting it.)
I did check with the guys at SVS to make sure that the CS-Ultra would be a good fit for his dimensions and it was. I just didn't do a lot more checking around for myself. I thought if I had to, I'd go with no sub, or even use one of the better ones that I could find locally.
Long story short, 2) no, I don't have umpteen thousand posts nor do I have time to accumulate such. I am probably not the most informed on the latest and greatest- hence I posted here to see what others had to say. 2) I don't regret getting rid of the Ultra because of who it went to, I am just trying to find a good plan B to go with.
So now, maybe you "understand" me. If so, do you have anything worthwhile to say?
Sherardp 11-27-07, 09:19 AM You wont regret your purchase, good luck and post up when you get it in.
MKtheater 11-27-07, 09:44 AM The Plus/2 is a great sub, especially for HT. Having said that for the price now you can buy very capable ed and epik subs. I think the sealed 18 inch sub from ED goes for $700(I could be wrong).

I would second that. The new ultra is in another league for its sound quality compared to all the other SVS offerings. This side of the expensive JL or Velo DD the ultra is very very good for SQ.
