View Full Version : The Studios dropped the ball this Holiday IMHO...

I don't get it. Where are all the Christmas movies this year. I know I've posted stuff about this before but man, it is really puzzling to me. Here we are 4 weeks from Christmas and the only Christmas movie to come out was the Bad Santa on Blu-Ray. WTF? New Line should have started out with some dual format catalog titles, and I guarantee that Elf would have sold gangbusters combined on both formats.

Come on HD studios step up to the plate!

santa clause 3 also, polar express came out like a month ago, really not many x-mas titles released

Keep in mind there aren't really that many releases on each format period though. :( it sucks but it's only a matter of time.

Yeah, Fox should have released that "Family Fun Edition" of Home Alone on BD.

I think part of the reason is that these titles only sell during the holiday season. The sales are limited enough as it is, and they don't want to further limit them by releasing something that is only appealing for a limited time. In upcoming years we should see more Christmas titles since there (hopefully) will be enough of a player base for more brisk (but still short-term) sales.

Then there's the whole demographics issue again. I'm generalizing here, but most of these movies tend to be family-oriented and don't exactly appeal to the gamer crowd.

Yep, the market is still way too small. We're lucky we have as many 'catalog' titles as we do... it'll get better, if HDM doesn't fail that is...

Home Alone in HD would be a perfect movie for this Christmas! I wish it were true :(

I'm sure no more films can be put into the 2007 schedule. When BD production increases in 2008, I'm sure we'll see many more releases at any given week.

I agree and will go even further to say the studios should be releasing tons more titles now during this holiday shopping season. There should even be more of a push for studios that are exclusive to one format to show there support for the format.

Don't forget Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story are both catalog BD titles and have been out for quite some time.

Fox could release Miracle on 34th Street on BD, but I don't think many 4:3 B&W titles are at the head of their BD mastering queue. :)

Meanwhile Paramount has the rights to It's a Wonderful Life, so that's a no-BD title from the word go. ;)

I always watch War movies during X-mas time.
That or anything I can marathon. Matrix(with ani) LOTR(extended all in a row) Starwars(all 6).

I just have to wait for my Die Hard set. I have spidey for now. Oh man and next week the last of the POTC films(marathoning that is going to be a litte rough)

My top christmas picks are Christmas Story and Jingle All the way.

I really want Elf in HD! I would buy it first day out! I usually wait for a sale on most movies but not Elf around Christmas time!

With Die Hard, A Christmas Story, and Christmas Vacation, what more do you need? :D I would like to see Home Alone again, haven't seen it in years.

Just out of curiousity..is it just my area...or does Best Buy never carry "A Christmas Story" in their stores. I have to have been to a good four or five BB's over the few months...and whenever I happen to look in the BD or HD sections, that movie is always absent.

I would love part 2... I think it is the better movie out of the two.

You also have Lethal Weapon :)

But I'd love Gremlins. :(

Considering the fight between formats I would have thought that both formats would have pushed for more to be released this quarter.

At this point however I think it is more likely that they are holding big name titles off to have an impressive list to announce at CES

If they do that, yes it will make them seem more impressive to the industry but what about the normal consumer that has never even heard of CES?

Keep in mind there aren't really that many releases on each format period though. :( it sucks but it's only a matter of time.

Let's see. During the month of December I've got 10 titles on order from Amazon in BD and HDDVD, for a grand total of $446.11. 4 of them are Box Sets (Battlestar Galactica, Bourne Trilogy, Harry Potter Collector's Set, and Lost Season 3), and the rest are movies. I don't know about you, but for me it's going to be a busy December. :D

Of course, if we're talking Christmas Classics (tm), most of them are older films that probably won't get the HD treatment: It's a Wonderful Life (home video rights owned by Paramount), Miracle on 34th Street (MGM?), etc.

Chistmas Vacation, Christmas Story, Santa Claus 3, Polar Express, and Badder Santa are the 5 I own. Plenty if you ask me. I would love to see Scrooged come out. That is my favorite Christmas movie.

I'm already almost too broke to order most of the 12 or so titles I want to get in December, I'm hoping some big commission soon :p.

In total there are what, less than 500 titles on each format? Wait til the marketshare grows, then they will release all the holiday popcorn flicks people purchase in Nov. and Dec.

I think that between A CHRISTMAS STORY, CHRISTMAS VACATION, BAD SANTA, and POLAR EXPRESS that Christmas movies haven't made too bad a showing for what's still relatively a niche format. (And DIE HARD, too.)

What I can't understand is why Fox didn't release DECK THE HALLS on BD. I mean, it's a terrible movie, but that would seem like a no-brainer release to me. But it's not exactly the first nonsensical move I've seen by Fox.

Those probably will be released in HD at some point, especially It's a Wonderful Life. It just won't be right away.

NYC has a certain charm at Xmas. We just moved back after 2 and a 1/2 years and although busier, still fun during the holidays.
